DMWEL0515

Thanks to insanedoh's's free delivery code, you're once again able to score this superb drop at a great price delivered to your door. And don't forget you get a further 5% back with CashRewards, bringing the price down to $66.45. Enjoy :)

The 10 Year Old Single Malt is Laphroaig's signature malt that is full sparkling gold in colour and has that signature rich smoke and seaweed character with a hint of sweetness. Surprisingly, the palate is rich with subtle sweet hints and complex layers of salt and peatiness that evolve on the palate and continue to the long and dry finish.

    A very good drop…
Personally, I prefer Lagavulin 16YO though. But each to their own.

A good drop but a little too peaty for my palette but interesting none the less. However I am prepared to revisit this after exhaustive testing.. A great price OP.

  • They are one of the few remaining distilleries that do their own malting. It is an acquired taste.

It doesn't get any better than this scotch IMO…. This is a good price too.

Although it may be worth saving the pennies for the 15yo 200th anniversary edition they are about to release?

    • +1

Not for me, it's GBP67 or near abouts, plus freight, so at twice the price for the 15YO I'd go this or the quarter cask or triple wood for less than the 15yo.

Then again the A'bunadh is fantastic, and at 60% allows the addition of some ice without killing the flavour.

Looking at Dan's product details it would appear the importers have watered this down from the original Cask Strength 55.3% abv to 40% O.o

    • No… It's a different whiskey altogether: https://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/P-3396.aspx

    • The Cask Strength is a different product.
      http://www.nicks.com.au/laphroaig-10-year-old-batch-004-cask…

    • 40% is the normal version. It's a normal part of the process for the cask strength to be higher.

    • +1

Why then does the label on the bottle [in two pictures] that forms part of Dan's description indicate 53.3% vol

      • Good spot!

My guess is the webmonkeys at DM linked to the wrong pictures as the pictures all refer to the Cask Strength version and the Description is all for the Normal version.

  • mm Vanilla Malt Scotch, my fav

  • I take it for newbies, this is not a good scotch to start with?

    • Probably right. If you're wanting to start with something with a bit of Islay-style character, I'd try Highland Park 12 Year Old. It is gentle, decently characterful and won't hit you over the head with unnecessarily 'bold' flavours. Similar price to this one.

what about as a newbie to all scotch whiskey to start with? is there something else to start with before trying the islay style?

        • Try glenlivet 12yr old.. Smooth taste but not over the top strong.

I'll probably get flamed for this, but it could be worth starting on a good blend rather than a single malt.

        • @tarken: thanks, i think those are only $49 at DM

        • @cvas: happy to try a good starting blend too…any suggestions?

        • +2

@obiwan: Well I am certainly no expert so I will just go by what my tastes are. Monkey shoulder I find has a delicate taste and is very easy to drink, The Naked Grouse (from the makers of Famous Grouse) is my all time favorite blend and has outdone many single malts I have had by far. However not readily available in AU unfortunately. Double black from JW is quite nice, however slightly overpriced in my opinion. A lot of people on here do not like Johnnie, but they didn't get to be one of the biggest selling blends in the world by making a sh*t drink.

Anyway that's the blends. As for the single malts, before buying a bottle you could head to a whisky bar and get a tasting selection or just try as you go.
My recommendation would be the Highland Park 12yo which you can never go past. To me its like drinking silk which had been sitting next to a smokey fire. Or try something a little sweeter like Aberlour.

Oh and don't forget the Limeburners from Albany, WA. They make a damn good single malt, if you ever get a chance, make sure you try it!

@cvas: You didn't get flamed! (@3hrs 52minutes). Fair comment too.

        • @cvas: thanks, before I saw this I had ordered jw double black since a friend recommended it as well (and I thought the name was cool, LOL)…. I will try that highland park 12 when I am done…

        • @obiwan: bnj is good. only sold at woolies group stores. used to be around $30 but is now about $39.

        • @cvas:
humbly disagree, blends are rougher. The absolute best to start with is Edradour, IMHO of course, and do yourself a favour and visit the distillery one day (smallest in Scotland).

I do like Islay whisky though.

    • I bought a bottle of the 16 year old stuff. OMG - definitely an aquired taste.

  • New to scotch, i would suggest a whisky from the "lowlands" Auchentoshan 3 wood is like silk

  • That promo code can be used for any Dan Murphy's purchase (except beer). forumninja posted it earlier, and thank you as I now have 4 bottles of Irish cream on their way.

  • How much is this usually in Duty Free?

  • for those wondering this scotch is not for noobs. decent price but spewing I didn't stock up duty free coming back from USA. cant remember the price exactly but I would say you could get the 1L bottle for this price

    • had a quick look at the duty free website and yes you are right, the prices are similar but in 1L size…same with the other scotches

  • In Japan where ijust returned from, this, and other bottles of spirits, are 30% or 40% the regular high prices we have to pay here. This malt was was $35 in a local supermarket and the more expensive quarter cask (108 bucks at Dan Murphy) was only $33 ! I bought 3 quarter casks there instead of at duty free and saved heaps. Tempted now to get a 10yr old bottle for when the quarter cask is drunk.
Despite us paying so much in Australia for good booze, this is the best local deal I've seen on the 10yr-old for ages, thanks!
