That must've been some special. I've checked with VroomVroomVroom and can't find anything remotely close to that price.
I think the Benz C-Class for $103.55 is a pretty good deal.

i20 are usually about 35 a day, with no minimum…

That's a DEFCOM corporate code - I wonder how's the insurance going to work when you have a prange…IIRC one of the corporate I've used to work for told us explicitly NOT to use the business travel corporate code as there's some weird insurance arrangement in place.

      • +1

$1100 is excess from what i know.

Can't say I'm an expert on this sort of thing, but insurance companies will look for any excuse not to pay out on a claim. I'd say lying about being a "DEFCOM" member could quite possibly void any policies you'd bought. At the very least it'll give them an excuse to drag their feet even more than usual.

        • That's what I'm alluding to. Oh well, might save a few bucks now, have a prang and no cover on a Merc. OzBargained.

  • I don't reckon this is a good deal at all.

    P.S. the i20 is ~$220 for 3 days, not 1 day.

Try for a day loan from a new car dealer. Cost zero.

    • +5

OK.. so you walk into a new car dealership and say give me a car for the day "dude".. ??

      • -7

Don't knock it until you try it.

      This is OzBargain, not OzExploitBusinesses.

    • How do I start off the conversation?

  • +5

Before you get too excited.Don't for get about the $100 a day insurance
    and $2000 excess

    • +3

Pro tip: The inflated insurance cost is how the rental place makes most of their profits.

But, if you're travelling, you can get travel insurance instead (from about $20 a day) that includes paying your car rental excess if needed.

Then you can just say no to the car rental insurance and save the difference.

      • Looking to head down to Melbourne next month for a week. If I go with the base rate $103.55 without any extra insurance etc. but purchase domestic travel insurance with car hire excess (up to $6k say) am I fully covered? Getting a quote of $79 with Allianz for the week.

        • +1

This crew are excellent for rental car excess. https://www.1cover.com.au/

        • +1

Have a look at Australia Post domestic travel insurance. Should be $90 for a year with $3000 car excess cover.

        • @derpdeder:
Good price for a year but some car rental excess is more than that.

        • +1

          @King Tightarse:
Becomes $156 per year when you increase the rental car excess cover to $6500. That looks to be as high as they go.

        • @izzyhop

You'll have to read the insurance's Product Disclosure Statement to see what car rental excess cover it includes - it differs from policy to policy (some might not include it at all, even, you have to check yourself. See how big of an excess it covers and make sure your intended car rental place is the same or smaller).

      • Do you have to pay an excess to claim travel insurance?

  • +1

guess if you want to drive a merc then its ok
cause if your in syd, no birds does cars for like 30 bucks a day (min 7 days I think)

    • Well yeah, if you want to drive a Holden then this deal probably isn't very good for you.

  • Can't you put your payment through a Platinum card with rental car insurance? Not sure about full T&Cs but I thought Westpac Black, ANZ Plat etc has rental car insurance cover if you play by these cards.

    Anyone has got full details?

  • Booked it for 2 days. Insurance excess was $6700 unless you paid an extra $60/day to reduce that down to $600.

    • What a rip off. Worse yet, these kind of insurance cover, the excess is payable even if you're not at fault. I don't know how they get away with it.

  • +6

Becareful with Eurocar, they are know for ripping people off with unfair claim and misleading info, see this ACCC article

I once had a hire car (not europcar) parked in dedicated car space on the side of the road. Stupid 18 year old in her dad's EA Falcon comes around the corner, loses control and wipes out the hire car on the left side (ie, she was driving down the footpath). She was not insured - it cost me $3,000. My only option was to sue her which would have cost as much to get the money back, plus she probably wouldn't have been able to pay anyway.

      Totally shafted…

TLDR - it's not only Europcar that does this sh*t.

      • Did you pay the rental car place for the extra insurance (excess waiver/reduction)?

        • Unfortunately not. I was a bit younger and a bit stupider. I was pretty happy with my ability to drive a car for 2 weeks without crashing it, and assumed that if anyone crashed into me it would be covered by 3rd party insurance. I didn't count on some stupid bogan from Montmorency wiping out a tree and no standing sign before crashing into my rented parked car, and her dirtbag father having no moral standing and refusing to pay a cent…
(worse still, the police drove by, didn't take a report, despite the accident happening directly outside a kindergarten. if they did, I would have had charges of dangerous driving pressed against her).

          I've learned from the experience.
