  • Does it include battery, then it could be considered a deals

    • +1

Bunnings torch does not include the battery

  • +1

You will find the $23 torch at Bunnings is LED, i'm 99% sure this one is not.

    • Think your right even though same model num. Still hell cheap IMO :)

    • I think the packaging was changed for the more expensive LED equipped torch as well.

  • +1

An led torch says LED on the cardboard (huge letters). I think this is the normal torch.

  • Hi Trent. The one at Bunnings is model number 108MK6LED. This one is 108MK6 and uses a xenon bulb.

    • Yeah we cleared that all up :)

      • Cheers mate. Still a great price.

      • Good, and more importantly Trent, are you getting the free chicken dinner in Perth tomorrow??

  • Take this to Bunnings for a pricematch I guess.

    • One at Bunnings would be a different model. I don't think Bunnings would price match their new and more expensive model LED torch to this old model Xenon Bulb torch. They do have different model numbers.

Oldskool torch, where's my 18650 batteries fit?

    Home> TV & Audio> TV & Audio Accessories> TV Accessories> Dolphin Torch

Interesting category TGG have put this under. Is this so you can still watch the TV when you lose mains power?

    • +6

Nah it doubles as a remote control, flash the light 7x at the TV for channel 7,etc etc

    • Yeah, you can watch the blank screen.

    • It's so you can get out the ladder in the middle of the night and go up to the roof to fix the tv reception for the missus. :)

  • $6.30 at Bunnings with pricematch. Very nice price.

    • Yeah I gotta go this Sat anyway for sprinklers so will grab one too. Hopefully they have them in stock :)

  • +3

will it help me find Dolphins?

    • +7

No, it will help you torch dolphins. Heartless bastard :-)

      • I think it's for dolphins to see at night. See, the handle is shaped for a flipper.

  • Anybody know a source to get LED bulbs to replace the old xenon incandescents? I got some years ago for maglites but would like something similar for generic torch bulbs.

    • you can't just retro-fit. A decent LED lamp needs heatsinking.

  • i think i seen a cheap plastic case for 4 x AA that makes it into a quasi 6v battery

    makes for cheap dolphin power

    • JayCar should have 4aa & 6aa holders and with some tinkering you should be able to run Dolphin with your stash Enoolopes.

  • Are these torches bright or have i only used worn out ones cause i remember these torches not being very bright… anyone help me out here?

    • +2

They are amazingly bright for what they are.

But the batteries cost a fortune and they chew through them quickly - so almost all of them are as dim as buggery because of the old worn out battery.

Really, this product is somewhat irrelevant now days, as a similar output LED torch would be 1/4 the size and weight. But the LED would be 10 or 20 times the initial price I guess.

      • Yep, not a bargain at all unless you have a very specific need.

  • Jaycar sell a rechargeable battery to suit these torches for $25:
    http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=SB2498

However, it's s sealed lead-acid battery, so you might want to check the weight before you purchase. I don't know how heavy it is, possibly the torch might not float with this battery installed!

I'm pretty sure that Jaycar used to sell a 4xD-cell battery holder that was designed to be a replacement for the 6V lanttern battery, but they don't seem to sell it any more.

    • +1

      0.76 kg

      charge at 7.2v and 1.5amp

      • +1

In that case, it's probably really close to not floating, if this battery is installed.

At a rough guess, the torch has a displacement of about 1 litre, and with an all-up weight of close to a kilo, that gives it a specific gravity of close to one.

You could test at home, before you buy the battery, by filling the torch with 0.76 kg of rocks or gravel, and seeing if it still floats in a bucket of water.

On the upside, the torch could also be considered as a self-defense weapon.

        • +1

You could just measure its displacement* and weigh it.

          *
          1. Fill a bucket with water to the top.
          2. Carefully submerge the thing using a couple of chopsticks to hold it completely below the water.
          3. Using a measuring jug, measure the water needed to refill the bucket to the top.

        • +1

I just weighed a regular alkaline 6v battery for these torches. 858g. So it will still float.
EDIT: I didn't see the comment that says sometimes they don't float with regular batteries, so caveat emptor.

    • +1

I had one once with an energizer battery in it and it didn't float at all so different 6v batteries come in widely different weights already.

    • JayCar should have 4aa & 6aa holders and with some tinkering you should be able to run Dolphin with your stash Enoolopes.

  • +2

Great deal if it was 1995.

    In 2015… not so much.

Kind of like buying a cheap CRT television.

    • +4

I think it's more like buying a Holden Sandman, the Dolphin is a classic. I think its best feature is its oversize, when you go looking for it in the cupboard when the powers out you never have trouble finding it.

      • Yes even the Dolphin classic Xenon Bulb torches are great. I have one but its smaller brother that i have been using for years. This is well worth the $7.

      • +4

You could get the same result by tying a modern torch to a brick.

        • +1

A foam or inflatable float would be smarter.

        • @Scrooge McDuck:

The other one would work better for breaking and entering. =)

      • Yes, agree the size is great, but LED makes a lot more sense in a torch.

Sooooo much brighter, Soooooooooo much longer battery life.

  • I can't imagine the use given my phone torch. I won't let ozbargain save me money

    • +3

These are substantially brighter than a phone torch, substantially sturdier, float, and a re cheap so you can takes risks with it you would not with a phone. E.g. use while boating, in the bush etc.
You need to expand your imagination ;-)

      • Fair point. But yea, personally, not much use.

      • also, you can't club criminals with your phone torch ;)

(that said, a maglite d cell is a better club than a dolphin)

  • Anyone know the battery hours between the Xenon version and the LED version of this torch?

I would imagine the LED version would last ages with that huge battery?

  • +1

The led variant is decent. I yhink from memory was around the 100 lumens but great on battery life.
I wouldnt get the globe type these days.
Also it would be great to have an adapter to utilize all the eneloops purchased throughout the years.

  • How would it compare to CREE LED Q5 $4.28 Delivered?
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/UltraFire-CREE-Q5-LED-1200-Lm-ZOO…

    • First, the 1200 lumen they claim is a joke, though of course it will be brighter than the Dolphin.
At $4, it might not be the best build quality :)
With any of those Chinese torches, I'd take it apart, apply heatsink compound where needed, and reassemble properly.

Its a bit like comparing a $1000 bicycle to a $1000 used car. Too many differences.

      • +1

That CREE LED Torch would $hit all over the dolphin in terms of light output. haha

        • Exactly. And the build quality of those Chinese torches are very good.

  • Incredibly inefficient and excessively bulky.

Also, every time you purchase a battery for this thing, you're simultaneously throwing money away and shitting on the environment.

  • every Dolphin torch I ever had over the years does not seem to last very long and is not very bright… the brand name for me has bad associations.

  • +3

67 lumens.. Cover your eyes people!

  • I used have one of these but it fell of a cliff and floated away.

  • I ended up getting one priced matched. The one I bought also came with a water proof pouch for mobile phones/valuables.

The Reject Shop is selling Eveready 6V HD batteries for $4. So for a total of $11 the torch and the battery is a bargain.

Ironically I find the lower light output xenon better than the higher output LED light when shone onto the water surface i.e. when crabbing. The cooler light from the LED tends to be reflected off the surface more than the Xenon which penetrates the surface better. So this older model still has some use.
