Best Credit Cards?

Hi, I'm new to credit cards, looking for something that lets me defer daily expenses and ideally apply no interest provided I pay within a period of 60 days or so. Points for flight upgrades would be a bonus.

Interested to know what others are using. Any recommendations? Thanks

  • Get two;

    1. Citibank signature for everyday expenses. $1 to a point ratio on Virgin or Singapore air
    2. Any fee free non-bank issued amex for only amex deals

    The end.

    • Thank you and sorry but what are Amex deals?

    • I'd suggest a card with no foreign transaction fees (Bankwest Platinum or 28degrees) before the AMEX, but that's presuming you buy stuff from overseas much.

      • If I was to recommend 3rd credit card, I would say get something like ANZ QF when there is promo, so you get ~$350 for free and cancel after one year.

I never quite understood 28degrees or BW Platinum, only for international purposes, especially those who load money before they go. Just use it via Citibank Visa Debit, which does create liabilities.
The above option is $350 better than 28degrees, which you have to load up with cash if you want to withdraw money via ATM from overseas.

I like to not pay fees on my overseas purchases? Could save a decent amount if you buy enough.

        • @ctd: yeah, so is Citibank Visa Debit. you dont pay fees & you dont get liabilities through our the year. Normally people travel overseas once or twice a year. So it's better to not have that liability if it is only for overseas purposes.

        • @superbass:

It's not just for use whilst overseas - it's also handy for foreign currency purchases (e.g. steam, amazon, netflix, etc.). Yes, a Citibank debit card will work, but these cards are also very good options.

    • is this good for overseas online shopping.

do they have insurance on items bought overseas?

  • No annual fees velocity Amex with10000 bonus points,
Coles is good with big rewards 1 dollar spend 2 points. Every 2000 points $10 off.

    • Agreed. We use Coles MC as points stack pretty quickly with FlyBuys card as well, but I don't there are any flight upgrade options with FlyBuys.

Sorry to jump on your thread but are there any simple fee-free CC you'd recommend as a first credit card? It's not really for deferring expenses as I don't make huge purchases (a couple hundred at most). I just want to get used to the whole deal of using a CC. Also, in regards to the suggestion of getting a non-bank issued AMEX card, are any of the fee-free ones listed at http://rewardscompared.com/cards decent?

Take a look at our site http://rewardscompared.com/cards

The most rewarding card for you depends on two factors: (1) Your monthly spend and (2) what percentage of purchases you can put on American Express.

Some accounts offer you two cards - eg Visa and American Express (Amex). Amex generally offers more reward points so the more purchase you can make using Amex, the higher your return. Not all retailers accept Amex or may slug you a surcharge, so in those instances you have to use Visa.

Plug your figures into our calculator here http://rewardscompared.com/cards and see what card comes out on top (the site will factor in the annual fee but not any once off sign-up bonuses). Take note of any conditions on the rewards.

Also make sure you follow the general principles outlined here http://rewardscompared.com/tips and you'll be well on your way to maximising your credit card rewards!
