  • The vent at the front/top of the Rinnai unit goes rust inside. I'm on my second one now and had the same problem within weeks. Not sure if this will happen to the Bosch unit.

Maybe a lot of salt or something to do with the location? Or perhaps the build quality has gone down? Have one - 4 years old now I guess - and it's still fine…..

    • Can't say I've seen that happen as they are stainless steel. They will discolour from heat and condensation of the burnt gas but not anything that should affect performance or lifespan. Certainly if it is something like rust, your plumber should have a Rinnai tech out asap, definitely not normal.

I guess this guy had stainless steel rust on him o_0

And within weeks, that's some fast rust!

        • I'm not too close to the sea.

    So this is Sydney only?

    • +1

Seriously last sentence in the post says it all

      • Hehe, yes Sydney only. However. I have many customers take me up on this offer as it was going intermittently last year, finished on December 31st and then started again at the end of January. The whole premise is the gas wholesaler is basically giving you a years worth of free gas in exchange they get you as a customer for the lifespan of the heater. Not a bad deal for them, and if you look into running costs of gas heaters like the Rinnai vs an electric storage tank (google "rheem calculator") its a huge saving long term even without a $500 rebate.

I'm not sure where you are located but there may be similar deals available in your area for switching to gas? Definately worth searching for because its not being advertised in Sydney as such, very few plumbers or anyone else for that matter are aware of it, definitely have to go looking for it.

My house is 50 years old & we are still using the original gravity hot water system which was installed by the builder in the roof cavity.

    • Ditto. But mine has started having some intermittent problems (float not seating so causing water out the overflow tray and pipe, rats nesting near the tank etc).
Time to look to a more efficient system.

      • I removed mine from a 1930's house. On dismantling I noticed it did have some corrosion and a small leak and was probably only a matter of time before it burst.

Usually the old ones are copper, and because they aren't under mains pressure they have a pretty easy life. As long as the safe tray they are sitting in doesn't have holes rusted in it and the drain from the tray to the eaves isn't blocked they shouldn't cause a flood. The main problem with them besides the electricity cost is the very low pressure. 9.81kpa for every meter of water above the outlet, which usually means around 30kpa. Mains pressure is usually 300kpa-500kpa.

        • @Liza1976: I did cut the tank up and got money for the copper.
about $150 worth of copper in it from memory.

          @Liza1976:

Yep, my tray was filled to the brim and then flowing down the overflow in the eave. Randomly started a week before Xmas.
We mucked around the with the float a bit and tested and it stopped for a day or two, then happened again, then stopped again and hasn't happened for weeks. Lead me to start researching on switching systems to a new gas system - continuous is my preference as I haven't got anywhere convenient for a conventional tank system

        • @deal88:

Good idea, except it will be a massive pain getting mine down :(

        • @nafe:

I've had the same thing happen, thermostat replacement fixed the overflow to the eaves

    • Never hears of these but if anyone else is curious this is a good read: http://www.oldhouseweb.com/how-to-advice/gravity-hot-water-h…

  • Is the price listed in this post before or after the rebate.

Post Updated so this is no longer relevant

    • I think the post title has been modified. Install price is from $1650 depending on model, then you get the $500 rebate effectively reducing it to $1150. If you click the link you there are several model options with pricing. Call or email if you need pricing on a different brand or model. Same rebate applies when switching from electric to gas though.

  • Do you have an electric instant heater. I dint have a gas connection but want to change as the tank isnt big enough to last 2 showers

So your offer is $50 off your normal installed price. The rebate from Jemena can be claimed regardless of who installs it.

  • Has to be a licensed plumber, they must supply a certificate of compliance as well a tax invoice as these are the documents you need to supply to receive the rebate.

The $50 off normal installed price is not exclusive to www.ozbargain.com.au as it is on my website. The offer is as it stands on the linked page which is $1650 installed. Oh and btw there happens to be a huge $500 rebate available that next to no one knows about.

I have the BOSCH 26E Unit and it's doing a fabulous job! tho I'd recommend the install location be near your kitchen to avoid having to wait 20 ~ 30seconds for the hot water to come out the tap :)

  • I got one of these

    Best investment ever!

Whatever you do, just make sure you get the controllers installed…. if you don't you could end up with the hot cold issue….installed price seems pretty reasonable…considering its pretty much free install after you take the rebate into account… that is if its forthat model with the controllers…

When i was doing my research the Rinnai was the better unit with better support… worth the extra $$$…. very happy with mine… ill be upgrading any house i buy in the future with one 0f these….

  • Word of warning if you are a rear property with the gas meter far away from the house. I would have loved to get an instantaneous system but they require bigger gas pipes than standard storage tanks, which meant $5000 to dig up the driveway and courtyard and replace the pipe work (about 60 metres fully paved). Had to just get another gas storage system in the end

    • Hi,
So did you buy another gas storage system and join it onto the existing? eg split the gas supply line into 2 etc etc?
I plan on doing this job too

  • Ah no sorry. I wanted to replace a dying storage system with solar + gas boosted instantaneous, but the cost of upgrading pipelines was huge compared to a house with the gas meter next to the house itself, so I just did a straight swap for a new storage system
