With the Aus dollar in a death spiral its a bad time to be to be traveling to the United States. We've just switched our next Christmas ski trip to Japan where the Aus dollar has lost about 10% in the last year and not the 30% its lost against the greenback. Qantas obliged by running a sale on fares on direct flights to Tokyo (right now!!) at year end…..:-) !!

      lol, "death spiral", haha

Skiing? I'm more worried about survival at this point. The AUD has lost over 30% in the last 8 months alone. If the current trend continues its only 2 years before we reach 1c US = 1$AU. A SSD from Amazon at $250 US shipped will cost approx AU $25000 to the average Joe without offshore accounts. If he survives the cannibalism crisis of 2017 that is. I say good luck

Strange that you'd be concerned with losing a couple hundred/thousand bucks but cool with potentially catastrophic nuclear fallout.

I would argue that if the Australian Dollar influences your travel plans greatly, you shouldn't be travelling.

While I completely disagree with cornucopia, I'd argue that the value you're getting out of your AUD should be considered when making your plans. As someone who's done Europe, North (twice) and South America over the last 2 years, traveling where you'll get the most bang for your buck is pretty much the OzBargain way.
My next trip is to Japan because I'll get the best return on my money while there (except for Africa ATM, but my friends weren't keen to travel there).

This is a decent price though.

I hate it when people "do" places.
          No.
          You went there.

        Agreed.
Travel when the time/situation is right. Exchange rate is just one part.

Some of my best days where when I was poor. Some when I was rich.

    • Thanks for the tip. Will consider doing the same.
