"allows you to turn lights on and off from anywhere…or from the other side of the world"

Great so those Russian hackers can not only steal my bank details, they can keep me in the dark at the same time (or give me an epileptic seizure).

There's some funky uses for these Wemo gadgets on IFTTT (ifttt.com)….e.g. flashs your lights when the footy is only/someone scores, etc

wonder how much is the parasite drain on standbys…

    • I'm interested in this is well. Switch is quite warm all the time, I'd guess it uses 5-10W same as wifi access point more or less.

  • This would require an electrician to install it as well ( ones would think). So it will cost another $40 to $50 on top of the unit.

in theory it does (as mentioned in the bottom of post).
Which is why they haven't really taken off in Oz.

In practice of course even this chick can install it.

      • Because zwave is better

      • In theory? Kind of like the Ipod was very popular in Australia even when "in theory" there was no way to obtain music for it in Australia for some years.

Lack of a neutral wire at the switch in Australia is the real problem, not regulations.

        • The In theory bit was relating to the sparkie.
The lack of sales in oz is just my opinion.

I think think the IFTTT stuff I mentioned in my Neg'd-to-death comment makes this an interesting toy.

But as mentioned by The need for a neutral as spotted by bamzero makes it potentially useless for many.

They also require a neutral, which most existing light switches probably don't have, and if you don't have conduit in place, it becomes a big job..

well spotted. No way a sparky will install one for $40 since it could mean quite some re-wiring to get a neutral wire to the switch.

      • I installed some in my house and was surprised to find neutral wires in some switches, but not others. My living, dining, alfresco and master bedroom now have Wemo switches. I could find a way to get one in my kitchen, but since it currently has two sets switches (center light and downlights), I'd rather leave them to be controlled independently rather than together on one Wemo.

My housemates wanted them in their bedrooms, but unfortunately they don't have neutral wires.

  • Note that it will also require running a neutral down to the switch. Typically house switches only switch active and only active runs down into the wall cavity where the switch is. As this device requires power to run it will also need neutral.

    edit: beaten as above.

  • probably you can run down a neutral wire from the light to the switch.. hopefully not a big job..

    • If you have a hollow wall and ceiling space.
Perth is full of brick/concrete homes with TPS cable embedded in cement. Why don't they use conduit more? Its dirt cheap and easy to install during construction, I'd have thought.

  • I like the concept but for that price i still have the two multicolor wifi/phone and remote controlable led lights from this deal a while ago https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/182804. P.S No electrician installation/ costs ;)

    • +2

      Wrong link. That's this deal.

  • Not saying this is a bad deal, but I'd be tempted to pay more (not much more if you include the cost of an electrician) and get something like this: http://www.diyhomeautomation.com.au/starter-kits/75-3-piece-…

Low power, no electrician required…. can also get lighting modules (http://www.diyhomeautomation.com.au/home-automation-products…) to let you dim lights. If you want to expand it, including having in-built modules installed, or hook up the heating system, you can…
