[Sony Store Perth] Sony MDR-ZX750BN Twin Pack ($199) / Sony MDR-ZX550BN ($79ea)

110

Browsing the Sony Store in Perth (Hay St) and saw these two deals. After checking previous OzB deals, they seem a good price:

Sony Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphone MDR-ZX750BN Twin Pack - $199
Sony Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphone MDR-ZX550BN Single - $79

The signs say "limited stock" but there were a decent stack of each.

  • Any reason why they're clearing the stock?

Also does twin travel pack mean two pairs for 199 or just that it includes the headphones and a travel pack?

I just saw the signs, but the Sony website lists the ZX750 as "discontinued" and I assume the 550 is the same.

Although when I asked about getting a Z3 Compact Tablet, apparently their buy price is $497, so they make a whole $2. To help compete apparently Sony gave them headphones to bundle with them. Possibly these are the headphones that they got cheap/free — only a theory though.

Tempted to get a set of 550 for my train ride. Canalphones are starting to hurt my ears.

I have a pair of Sony MDR-ZX750BN, bought on discount at Officeworks a few months ago at somewhat more than this price.

They seem robust, have great sound, and about the same level of active noise cancellation as my Sennheiser PCX 250, PCX 250 II and PCX 310. I find myself using the Sony more because they are wireless (Bluetooth), much easier to set up or store and have better sound and bass. (Being much bigger ear pieces, better sound and bass is easy to understand.)

They are compact enough for travel as the ear pieces rotate flat and they come with a draw-string pouch that looks as though it will last. They take about twice the space of the Sennheiser PCX's, which take foldable compactness to the limit for any headphones that are not earbuds. On the other hand that makes the PCX's slightly fragile whereas the Sony MDR-ZX750BN seems quite robust. The PCX's came with a well fitted zip-up travel bag which is much better than a draw-string pouch.

    I really like my MDR-ZX750BN.

The information I found when I was shopping around was that the ZX550's do not have "active" noise cancellation. In such a case they would not perform as well as the ZX750's in cars, around computer fans, in aircraft or with similar noise sources.

  • I found stock of the MDR-ZX750BN at David Jones Carindale (qld) and they price matched based on the picture from the sony store.

I note that it is a special twin pack - not two separate boxes.

If there is interest I will post the receipt.

Edit - there was at least 1 more in stock at Caridale.

    • Just opened the box - inside the box is two retail boxes.

That should make reselling the 2nd pair easier :)

That's if my wife doesn't claim them.

  • Went and had a look at these headphones last week.
They don't have that quality feel to it.
