Nice cheap monitor but personally, if you are going to Dell to buy a 24inch monitor, do yourself a favour and buy a 16:10 model 1920x1200 rather than the model above 1920x1080.

Much much better and they are often on special for similar prices.

    • +3

Honest question - how are they better? I've been looking at this monitor for a while so if I can get better I'll do that :)

      • +10

If you think about viewing websites or documents, you need to see more on the vertical axis rather than the horizontal axis. So keeping the HD 1920 horizontal width you get to add an extra 120 pixels to the vertical length, not a massive deal but is definitely more pleasant browsing experience.

Plus 16:10 is closer to the Golden ration of 1.6 to 1, which has magical powers.

        • +1

I have to say that there is a huge difference when you can add the 120 pixels. The main reason is the screen is chockers with taskbars, ribbons, menus, status bars, etc, so by the time you get usable screen you've lost 20% of the realestate anyway. An extra 120 is a lot better than just 11%.

        • 1600 x 1200 here.

          Back to the future yeeeeeah…

      • +1

It's 120 extra lines… to me, that doesn't translate to 'much much better'. People who use 16:10 displays absolutely swear by them, and TBH, it gets a bit annoying. Half the comments on these deals are usually pretty much "but it's not 16:10!". And yes, I've used them before.

        • +4

Hey that is 11% more pixels, all on the vertical axis!

The biggest difference is ratio though, it is just more pleasing to the eye for when editing documents or viewing websites.

16:9 used for HD TV's was a comprise ratio between television filming in 4:3 and a typical movie standard of 21:9. It was not developed with editing documents, browsing websites or playing games in mind.

I wouldn't say it is much much better, just better.

        • @FabMan:

I'm aware of the differences and benefits. I just don't see it as a big deal.

        • @ProspectiveDarkness:

I suspected you would, but I answered for other readers too and I agree it isn't a big deal either.

Though what about those horrible 1366x768 resolution screens you find on budget laptops, yuk, give them 1280x800.

        • @FabMan: 16:10 = bad for Dota 2! 16:9 = Good

        • 1920x1200 is also better for use as a portrait monitor, as that extra 120 horizontal lines becomes an extra 120 vertical lines, giving a wider page. (as websites designers adjust to users having bigger screens, this becomes more important!)

        • People who use 16:10 displays absolutely swear by them

I am one of these people. I really couldn't go back to 16:9. Can't explain the explain how 120 pixels means so much to me but it makes a difference.

      • it all depends what you're using the monitor for..
If I'm doing something like web page development, for me the extra height of 120px is invaluable.

      • 16:10 is significantly better - I came across in 2007 to 16:10 and many monitors later (all Dells at work and home) now can't handle 16:9 displays at all. I am one of the converts.

I'd even go as far as saying it doesn't matter what you intend to use it for. Games, Word Docs, Excel, Web browsing or design - 16:10 kills it every time in my book.

    • another honest question - why all these dell's ultrasharp so expensive? usually a 24 is like $200.

      • +2

        Better colour reproduction

        • Thanks. I alwats thought the resolution was higher, like 2k or 4k.apparently I am wrong.

        • @alwayseric: Technically speaking 2K resolution is 2048 × 1080 which is only marginally better than 1080p (1920 x 1080). Besides 2K resolution is not used in monitors.

    • Yep, I'm still using my OLD e248wfp 24" 16:10 dells and they're great for everything I need, viewing angles good enough I can see them from basically side on, good for in bed!

    • Should I get a Dell 24 inch 16:10 1920x1200 or the Korean Crossover 290m 2560x1080 for AUD $359.90? I have a surface pro 3, not sure if that works with the Crossover.

    • Better for work but you have letterboXing on all Video content.

      • is there one similar to the Crossover, but has a display port or mini display port?

The picture is very misleading, it seems like one single panel to me…

    Cheaper here.

I bought from these guys awhile back, free shipping, came in perfect condition as well.

For those interested, there is a newer model that is almost identical however 1920 x 1200 resolution, the U2415. Not on sale, but just a comment in case this influences your decision.

    • +1

I was going to buy a U2415 but the limited aspect ratio options put me off. I have an older Dell 16:10 monitor and love it :)

    • +3

Usually, I only suggest to buy Dell UltraSharp monitor which has 'PremierColor'. For example, Dell U2413..
U2415 is the newer model of U2414H.

And another thing is that if you want to buy a Ultrasharp monitor, don't forget to buy the extended warranty. Dell service is pretty good. If you buy the extended warranty, and your monitor is broken before the extended warranty expires. You will get a brand new monitor, which is also the same level with the one you purchased. For example, you bought a Dell 2707 4 years ago, and today it's broken. You'll get a dell 2713H..

      • Why would you only suggest PremierColor monitors? If you're using it with a desktop PC, chances are, you're only outputting 8bits of colour per channel, and plugging that into a 10bit/channel monitor like the PremierColor ones just means you get overblown and inaccurate colours.

      • +3

U2415 is the newer model of U2414H.

According to TFT Central, U2415 is the replacement for U2412M:
        http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2415.htm

        U2414H has 16:9 aspect ratio
        U2415 has 16:10 aspect ratio

Any deals for the 27" ?

Bought this monitor when they had the last sale for.. $260 I think. Seriously the best monitor I've bought so far.

Anyone considering purchasing multiple of these monitors with the intention of daisy chaining with displayport 1.2 should be aware that it doesn't work well or at all. I bought two of these last time in a deal and had it setup daisy chained and had problems similar to those described here: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/2oe2sf/discussion_…

I've now got them connected separately with displayport and hdmi and they are good monitors otherwise.

  • i have 3 of these are the thin bezel is amazing!

    • Do you daisy chain with Display Port? Which GPU do you use, and do you use these for gaming? :)

      • Hiya!

No i plug them straight into my GPU (GTX 980).

I do i play Dirt 3 and BF4.. To be honest tripple display is a bit of a Gimmick for gaming unless you play racing games imo.

But i find them very useful for work aswell :)

  • +3

I am pretty sure Dell 20% off is not worth buying as their best deal is 30% off.

    • +2

      You know the truth :)

  • Damn this page, I now really want a monitor. Why can't I find a 27" at 2560 x 1600?

    • Surely 2560 x 1600 is a very nice resolution.

Would you consider 4k monitor? Sorry if I made it off topic.

Getting a bigger screen like 30" and you can see heaps.

      • The price difference between 27" and 30" is huge.

        I can get a 27" monitor from Dell with a resolution of 3840 x 2160 much cheaper than a 30" at 2560 x 1600.

I was hoping if they did 27" 2560 x 1600, it would be cheaper still!

        • Indeed. I recall that when it comes to 4:3 19" has 25% more area than 17" (I never actually figured out if this was correct) … it doesn't make sense intuitively but there ya go.

    • +1

Me too. I've considered those Korean monitors many times- but as I have a laptop I'd need to buy an HDMI model which is even more expensive…

  • +1

I'm amazed at everybody jumping onto a Dell 20% deal. Judging by the price history of this monitor, I'd wait a month or two until it is at least 30% off.

    • Not sure we're going to see much more of the 30% off, when you take in to account tumble of the AUD.

      • It's possible… but forex rates alone don't tell the whole story. For example but last time this was discounted (Oct?) AUD was at .86 ish USD? The price was discounted to $265. Yet earlier that year when it was up to .93-95 USD it was discounted to $286. (Going on previous Oz posts).

      • Dell actually dropped the price of their 27" monitor. Also as we speak, there is currently a 30% off on 27" monitor - see https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/181904

        • -2

$699 not much of a bargain
