    • to expand…

      • max power in australia is 5 Watts
      • our cb radio channels are in the 477MHz band, this thing goes 400-520MHz so you will be interfering with police/ambulance/fire brigade/airports/garage door openers etc.

Not saying this isn't illegal, but…

•our cb radio channels are in the 477MHz band, this thing goes 400-520MHz so you will be interfering with police/ambulance/fire brigade/airports/

It will not interfere with etc if you don't program in those frequencies.

Just like how a kitchen knife can kill people … if you use it to kill people. :)

Read the link I posted above.

@sheikyerbouti: Read the last line I wrote in my post above?

        • @eug

Do you really expect people not to interfere with those frequencies? It's illegal for a reason. Because some people are morons.

        • +2

@LincolnLenny: Do you really think every single person who buys these radios do so with the intention of interfering with services?

Are you aware that you can easily buy used 100% type-approved Australian commercial radios off ebay for cheap and program in any frequency you like (e.g. GP328s come in 450-520MHz versions) and interfere all you wanted?

It doesn't matter where the radios come from, it's the people who are the problem.

          Hence my knives example.

The vast majority of people use kitchen knives for their intended purpose.

A small number of morons use them to stab people.

That doesn't mean everyone who buys kitchen knives do so with the intention of stabbing people.

          @LincolnLenny:

If we didn't allow people to own things because they were morons… there would be far less traffic on the way to work… we wouldn't have smoking areas… and politics would be a very different game!

        • +2

@kudoz83: actually that might be a good way to live considering the current political situation…..

        • @eug:

I get the knives point and yes I agree with it to an extent. By the way you're talking about it I assume you think we should be allowed guns because guns don't kill people, people kill people.

While I understand the majority of people aren't going to use this to interfere with emergency services my point is that it's illegal. It's illegal because people shouldn't be ABLE to interfere and a device that makes it possible…This device isn't in the best interest of anyone.

What a beautiful world that would be though :)

Ahh, I was expecting the gun example to come up, presumably because that argument is often used for guns. You and I both know there's a difference between a radio and a gun that can be used for mass murders of course.

It's illegal because people shouldn't be ABLE to interfere and a device that makes it possible isn't in the best interest of anyone.

Yes, but you can easily buy a 100% legal, type-approved radio locally and do exactly the same thing.

Anyway I never disputed that it's illegal. I just see it a bit like the millions of tourists coming in to our country each year carrying technically-illegal non-RCM-or-A-ticked radios in the form of mobile phones (e.g. from China, etc), and non-C-ticked chargers for their phones and laptops that are connected to the mains with non-approved travel converters.

As long as the radios are used on the CB band at 5W max, and are clean and don't splatter all over the place, I wouldn't object to someone using it for that purpose.

If they start misusing it by jacking the power up or interfering with other frequencies, I would of course object. But as I mentioned before, all that can be done with 100% legal hardware that you can purchase locally anyway, so I wouldn't single out overseas radios in this situation. It's the people who are the idiots, not specifically overseas radios.

      • Garage door openers operates under 400MHz

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garage_door_opener

        Airports operate around 120MHz
        http://www.qsl.net/vk1zmc/air.html

Might be fun to listen to Police channel though :)

        • Not entirely sure you can hear police with them. SES maybe? I'm pretty sure the police are digital now.

        • garage door openers should operate at 433MHz otherwise they are illegal too.

That wiki is for america. they use 315MHz, we and the rest of the world use 433MHz.

You should probably get your facts straight before you go downvoting.

        • @matt6589:

          I never downvoted you.

Perhaps you should practice what your preach

I upvoted you to prove my point..

      • Set it to 4W and legal CB band and it should be OK?

Or does it need some Austel or ACMA approval to be operated in Australia?

        • +1

No, to be legal you must:
          - permanently modify it to only use the CB band, or
          - permanently modify it to receive only, or
          - be a licensed ham beast

  • -2

these only work in the language chinese, not Austel approved, but Wongtel is OK.

  • "So, what are you in jail for?"

"Oh you know, I got caught with a $50 Chinese 2 way radio. Got myself a 2 year stint…"

I know about prison tattoos that have meaning, tear drops and bluebirds… what would you get for "intention to operate" a $50 2 way radio?

They should sell them with free tin foil hats…

    • wait for the granny that got busted for downloading amp pee threes serving far longer jail term….

    • -1

It won't be so funny when an ambulance can't communicate back to base because a dopey ozbargainer is transmitting on a licenced frequency.

      • I know right!! The newspapers and courts are just full of time wasting criminals caught for transmitting on fire and ambo channels!

Lets face it, the people who know how to program these are looking for them so they can program them the way they want, not to go around clogging up ambulance coms. The morons who would want to do this usually dont have the brain power to read, let alone plug one into a computer and write/flash emergency channels to it to pester emergency coms anyway…

  • I did not know about the 5w limitation. Surely the Baofeng UV-5R Plus or a UV-82 would be a better deal anyway. Cheaper and no over-power issue. Reviews show the UV-82 antenna is better than the UV-5R and is similar to an 8 watt UV-5RTP (the 8 watt version of the 5R)

I wish they would do a deal on a UV-5R Plus or a UV-82 so I could decided between them…

  • Handy for the bug-out-bag so you can eaves-drop on our Chinese overlords during the alien/zombie/invasion/apocalypse.

  • I am not too sure I want to hold a 8W radiating antenna next to my brain when talking…

    • It comes with a PTT earpiece so you can have the transmitter in your pocket - next to your privates…

  • A guy was fined $3000 and forfeited all his gear for using gear that exceed 5w output. ACMA tracked him down.

    http://www.acma.gov.au/Industry/Suppliers/Equipment-regulati…

    • Sounds like he was being an idiot and interfering with legitimate users. He also ignored the first warning that the ACMA gave him. Serves him right!
