more like build-a-skeleton. A proper bear ends up $50-$100 after all the accessories and knick knacks…

Agreed. On a previous deal we got some $50 vouchers for $20ea. Gave each kid 2 vouchers (which might have been in violation of the fine print, but the store allowed it) and they were able to get the bear, an outfit and one accessory (e.g. an astronaut helmet, a skateboard, a bag etc.) for $100 face value. You could have easily spent another $40 per kid on extras.

      • Thinking about it, I'm too much of a tight arse to have given the kids $40 worth of vouchers each. I looked it up and it was $15 gets a $30 vouvcher. So read my comment above that $60 gets you the bear, outfit and 1 accessory.
Still, that means I gave them $30 in vouchers each - I must be getting soft.

  • How much does the actual bear and equipment cost?

    • From memory the bears are around $20 and each item in the $10-$$20 range.

    • Depends on the bear.. we did this last year and added $10 to each person .. they could upgrade their bear or buy something, it was their choice..

That deal was Groupon and it was $60 for $120 value, so marginally better than this deal.

      • The fine print says it gets you a $16 bear, which is the bottom tier. So the $78 voucher gets you $128 "worth" of bears. But no extras to do the "building" part.

        • Yes, as I said we added $10 each last year… I think the deal we had was for $15 bears and we added the $10 to make it $25 each.. so they each got either a $15 bear plus 2 bits or a $20 bear and 1 bit or just a $25 bear on its own…

  • Waste of time and money. the kids get no real experience..

    • Daughter loved it last year.. they made the bears and played games etc.. took an hour, which in itself was nice as it did not drag on and on.. plus everybody got a bear to take home which seemed great value compared to most parties.

  • I suspect there is a business model in preparing similar kits for parents to host their own parties at home. The host could nominate the number of bears and accessories to enable each child to make a selection. After the party they could return the unused items for a refund.

    • There are numerous home hosted build a bear type offerings around.

  • Thanks OP - my Son loves this place. It's good value when the kids get to invest in a toy they really want and can dictate how it comes about. As for the accessories, I just don't buy them. We wait until a later visit and I consider them a reward for good behaviour etc.
