  • are these any good

    • +1

      the silence is deafening…

    • +1

Should be testing out one in the next few weeks so I'll let you know.

      • I am very eager to see your review :)

  • AUD $163.25.

would a NUK from this deal be a much better option https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/180826

    • NUC price simply doesn't compare when you add RAM and SSD. Have no idea about this thing though.

      • +1

thanks, thought they came with ram but not a drive, but I am wrong.

    • +2

If you apply the coupon it's ~140AUD.

      • +1

Thanks for clearing up the price :)

      • thanks

  • If that was aud id buy just cause i can lol

  • -4

    NUC is better at price

    • +1

It's hard to compare them. This thing comes with 64Gb internal storage and OS, NUC doesn't.

      • Hdd is cheap and so is ram. Nuc is all intel components so is really nice fast and good after sales support

Bulti in IR receiver that powers unit on from powered off state no need for sleep mode all the time.

Is worth that extra amount especially if using as a media box.

    • +1

NUC will need RAM and a HDD. This one here is an all-in-one package.

  • It looks small so may be prone to overheating, and how the (profanity) is it going to power 3 usb ports + it's own chip/cpu if it is only receiving 5v/2A of power?

I've heard that the meegopad was slower than others due to only having a 5V/2A power input, so I assume the same issue applies here.

    • +1

Not sure about the overheating issue but a usb powered hub would solve the power issue with usb hard drives.

    • +1

No chance of overheating. Also, chipset consumes less than 2W.

    • A keyboard and mouse will run fine on the USB ports. A USB hub may be necessary for any external hard drives with ac power.

    • I can say the unit does overheat a LOT.. typical temperatures run from about 76c idle up to 90c on 100% utilisation. too hot to touch under these circumstances. Maybe put some heatsink underneath??

      • After reading some forums, figured out that the design is pretty stupid and its almost an upside down approach. the heatsink and CPU is on the bottom of the PCB compared to the case but does not dissipate the heat enough this way. Flipping the unit around with the holes and underbelly up will take about 10c off. Blowing a small fan onto it gives another 5c as well. I am hovering around 55c on idle to a max of about 80c or thereabouts without slowdowns or CPU throttling anymore..

        • If there's vents on two opposite sides, it might be worth just mounting it sideways up against a wall or the side of the desk, so it can draw air in the bottom, up past the CPU, and out the top.

        • @salem: Unfortunately there isnt any side vents so that idea is no good. It really is strange that they had inverted the motherboard within the case though - as every good schoolboy will tell you that heat rises because of this, it will be much harder to dissipate through this design.

  • Wouldn't the Pipo X7 be better as it has the newer chip but even though it has 32gb less storage

    • +1

      Same chip - Z3735F

Edit: Sorry, I was wrong, it's a different chip, but same performance:
      http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Atom-Z3736F-vs-Intel-Atom-Z373…

      • I wouldn't say same performance. The Z3736F has a 2.16ghz turbo clock rate, whereas the other has 1.83ghz.

    • +1

Head over to freaktab, lots of threads about the Pipo X7. The new owners are impressed with the unit including android devs

    • I am still waiting for my 97 AUD approx. PiPoX7 to land and test it. :(
      it was delay in mail.

However given I own one of those 8 inch tablets baring similar chipsets, I can say, it should do the job for what it design to be.

This model is just another spin on the concept.

Any one think they can use it as something for content development should pick an NUC and invest 3X the $

  • +1

Is this good for playing Dota 2?

  • Anyone know if this would do ok as a torrent/usenet box while running plex server to serve a smart tv and a chromecast?

I've currently got an old PC doing the job while doubling as a file server.

I'm thinking of replacing it with this and a NAS.

    • +1

Yeah, it should be able to do it as it's a Windows 8.1 PC. I know that popular torrent programs and the plex server client runs fine under Windows 8.1.

    • +1

the description says it has ethernet, but for the life of me i can't see it in the pictures. without ethernet, i wouldn't use it as a plex server. unless your WAN is awesomely fast.

    • 10/100 nic might be a little slow for plex to multiple devices

      • Better to use this as a client rather than a server.

  • Windows 8 with Bing - I thought this was only for laptops, and tablets smaller than 9"?
Are they allowed to ship it with Windows 8 With Bing?
This device is neither a laptop or tablet.

    • +1

Manufacturers pay a small fee to have it activated on devices that are not a tablet.

      • +1

        Thanks for clarifying.
        Purchased one :)

    • Definitely not just for laptops. Lots of mini-PCs around now, like this one, which come with 8.1 with Bing. I think it's devices up to a certain value.

As for the VOYO Mini PC, is that 10/100 Ethernet a typo, or does it really not have Gigabit?

      • From the photos I don't think it even has an ethernet socket.

        • unless it come with a usb/ethernet dongle? but yeah, without wired ethernet it'd be a rubbish media server. might be ok as a client if the wifi is strong and clear enough.

        • Ugh! You're right, it doesn't.

      • I think it's devices up to a certain value.

Definitely better looking than the Pipo X7. Don't think I'd get either though. Would be different for under A$100.

  • I like this - but was not impressed with their previous product (the Mini tablet) and had a number of manufacturing issues. Wondering if I should pull the trigger or not on this.

  • anyone know whether this would run plex and be able to encode HD?

  • How would this compare against the Pipo X7 for US$128.12 delivered?
It only has 32GB RAM, but also has an AU plug, external antenna and ethernet socket.
I'm also interested in using either as a Plex box.

    • plex server or plex client? the pipo actually has an ethernet port, and it's cpu and gpu are very slightly higher clocked than the one in the voyo.

and the pipo comes in black, which would look nicer in an AV cabinet if you're wanting it as the plex client.

      • A Plex server (and client?). My ReadyNAS isn't powerful enough to host a Plex server. It's sounding like this may be more suitable, depending on transcoding capability. Ideally I'm looking for a small/quiet BoxeeBox/TiVo/Blu-Ray/AppleTV all-in-one replacement, but prepared to sacrifice on components of the price is right (e.g. add USB TV card/Blu-Ray).

        • Best option is to have players that can natively play your formats so Plex doesn't have to transcode. This box or the pipo would be good enough to play most 1080p content natively in a variety of formats.

Edit: although this box only has WiFi n and no Ethernet so unless you have a ridiculously strong and clear WiFi signal it'll struggle as server or client, just because of the limited bandwidth.

        • @salem: Thanks for your advice. The Pipo with ethernet sounds like a better option for me. Cheers!

        • +2

Just purchased for US$107 using my GearBest link above and previous code PipoX7LM

        • OK - so my next question is…. which USB dual-TV tuner to get?
How about this $19 one from Officeworks?

        • @muncan: you're outside my comfort zone, there. I much prefer to let other people do the TV capture, encoding, removing the ads, and then, uh…lending them to me….

        • @salem: ha - I'm talking casual timeshifting TV

        • @muncan: Never seen it but spec's look OK.
Great price! So good they're all gone.
Next cheapest in Adelaide www.greenboxit.com.au/cart.php?target=product&product_id=193… $43.

        • @McFly: damnit! It's $35 at PCDIY but I don't want to pay over $19 now :-P

        • @muncan: Yeah me neither, but PCDIY is still a good find.
(Never heard of them though, have you?)

        • @McFly: Yep, I popped in today actually! They're a MSY clone (took their office when MSY Adelaide relocated).

    • +1

      The Pipo's are about $89US delivered….

      • Link?

        • +1

price went up a bit since I bought last time…. Go through the OzB link for Pipox7 and you will get US107.99 now delivered for black with AU plug.

  • Is suitable for online tv? Whats cable to connect to Tv?

    • mini HDMI to HDMI cable (not included??)

  • Hi Clear, does it come with Microsoft Windows 8 Proof of Licence Certificate of Authenticity?

    • +1

Windows 8 with Bing doesn't come with a CoA.
Microsoft gave them to the manufacturers for free (on certain devices) or small fee (on other devices) so they can level the playing field between Windows & Android.

There is a criteria for devices which can have Windows 8 with Bing.

For the end user there is no difference between a Windows 8 and Windows 8 with Bing.
For a manufacture the only difference is that they cannot change the default search engine of IE to anything other than Bing.

    • OS: Windows 8.1 with Bing (activated)

      (Maybe through the BIOS?)

      • Windows 8.1 is activated slightly differently. It doesn't only rely on Bios anymore due to the bios hacks that were available for Windows 7 (SLIC based + Certificate).

    • What lplau said sums it up.

  • Can I plug a monitor, mouse and keyboard into this for my kids to browse the Internet on? Or isn't it suitable for that?

    • +1

That is pretty much the perfect use case for these boxes.

      • +1

Awesome thanks, I just wasn't 100% sure when reading the websites description.

  • Just bought one of these via this post, so thanks!
I've been waiting to see the Intel Compute stick, but this is pretty much the same. Hopefully it'll be here next week via DHL, so if all goes well I'll have something for Netflix and Foxtel Go in a different room.

  • How would this go as a target (i.e. not host) for Steam streaming?

    • I have not used Steam streaming myself, but apparently the client can be an old PC or laptop. Intel HD Graphics is supported, so this should be more than enough to get you going.

  • +1

I think PIPO X7 is better option than this. External antenna, Ethernet port, slightly better processor. I bought it when it was on $89, waiting for its delivery.

  • I would like to know the performance of on of these things? Look at the specs and the make i would bet on it being slow, unresponsive and only good for surfing the web. Id like someone whos actually owns one wo prove otherwise.

    • See my comment below.

  • Can this plug into my AVR and plays MKV files for surround sound?

    • Check out the PIPO deal comments, one of the Ozbargainers has already received and tested the PIPO X7 Unit, and the performance looks promising.

      • Well at-least the x7 look like its housed in a metalic sturdy box. this one looks plastic and cheap from the screenshots

        • The X7 also looks like an old Router from 10 years ago too with a big aerial that isnt too aesthetically pleasing. This looks to be a much smaller, sleeker box that is at least colourful.

  • Shipping time is terrible!! bought the MK808B Plus on 10 Dec 2014, still haven't received my order!!!!

Rep, can you please help tracing it up? Order: #3230818, PostNL tracking #: RS178822112NL

    • Sorry to hear that, with that being near Christmas a lot of packages may have been delayed during transit. Auspost for example was 2 weeks behind. On 26/1/15 it was on transport to the country. I'll see if I can find out anymore information.

  • Yeh still waiting for my order from last year Rep STILL NOT DELIVERED
    Order No.#3238122
    Tracking No.RS181976768NL
This is my first order from this mob and im not impressed
My suggestion to people is if you want something from this mob … dont expect it quickly ..if at all

    • Did you try contacting support about it after it didn't arrive at the expected time? Sometimes mail can get lost.

Edit: Check the tracking here as it says it's on the way to the country on the 21st.

To clarify even further. Orders made around Christmas will likely be delayed during transit. My orders from Dec 2014 have been arriving over the last 2 weeks.

    • Good morning sir, I'm the representative from geekbuying. ^^

We check your order was sent out on 24th Jan ,we know you waited for long time .
We also track the tracking number that it had updated on 21st Jan .
Don't worry and you chosen the registered airmail ,the tracking information is not often updated .
The shipping company said it is a normal situation and sometimes this shipping method will be effected by holiday or weather .hope you can understand .
But if you don't get the package until the middle of this month ,free to let us know and the shipping company will help you investigate it .hope it can be ok for you .

Besides ,we found you open the dispute and we hope you can close it ,you will get the package soon .
Hope you can receive the package soon .
Anway we will try our best to help you .

      have a nice day
      best wishes

      • We check your order was sent out on 24th Jan ,we know you waited for long time .
We also track the tracking number that it had updated on 21st Jan

Did you actually read what you wrote???
You sent it out on the 24th January ONE month after I ORDERED IT!!!!
THESE GUYS ARE JUST A PACK OF LIARS AND I WILL NOT CLOSE MY PAYPAL DISPUTE AND STOP ASKING ME!!

        • Sorry we made a mistake. Your order was actually sent out on the 24th of December, not the 24th of Jan. The tracking number says that it was on the way to Australia on the 21st of Jan. For free airmail it's common for the tracking information not to be updated as often compared to express post or a courier like TNT. Shipping times depend on various factors including holidays season like Christmas in this case and weather.

Geekbuying is sorry for the long shipping and we will try our best to help you out further. You can contact the customer service on [email protected].

On a more personal note. I'm in Australia and my packages ordered late December last year only arrived last week. This is because it was Christmas with Auspost admitting that they were behind on packages by 2 weeks and because shipping may take up to 30 days after the order has been processed.

  • how fast does this mini pc resume from sleep / how long does it take from power down to windows login screen?

    • I don't know the exact amount of time it takes to wake up, but I do know booting into Windows when first powered on is about 10-15 seconds roughly.

  • Anyone had their order shipped yet? Processing time seems slow for an item that is 'in stock.' Ordered 7 days ago, still no notification that it has been shipped. Hoping that it gets posted out before Chinese New Year begins.

    • PM me your order number and I'll check for you.
