What's a product that is a former shadow of itself?

What are some products you remember as being awesome back in the day, that you steer clear from and why?

There could be various reasons.

Quality has gone down, taste different, too expensive, product has shrunk in size.

Mine is a very personal one, Carmel Snack Packs- those were the bomb, I could eat 6 in one sitting. Then they released this ghastly new and "improved" version. Was never the same, and not surprisingly that flavour is not on the shelves anymore.

When Computers were called 286, then 386, then 486 then u guessed the new model would be a 586. It was never about the brand.
Now we have to focus on the manufacturer based on what we "Feel" is more reliable.

Porn, use to be great with good story lines, being able to fast forward and rewind, and it was hard to come by. Now the internet (and my sheets) are saturated with it, and it's all wham bam thank you mam, I want a storyline dammit

@dtnguyen,according to wikipedia, Movie of the Year, Best Drama, best director and 7 other awards went to porn movie underworld . Can't be all that bad if it has won all those awards.

      Sypnosis:
Adult entertainment fans can be certain of one thing: Brad Armstrong delivers. Year in, year out, they can expect something big from the Wicked Pictures director-something daring, ambitious and aesthetically exciting. It might be a sci-fi epic or an action thriller, an elaborate parody or a darkly sensual romance.

Then again, it might be something completely different.

In emotional tone and imagination, this year's Armstrong blockbuster-Underworld-calls to mind his 2008 movie Fallen, about an angel who has lost her wings and been exiled to earth. AVN reviewer Emma Edwards wrote that Armstrong and his leading lady, Jessica Drake, had produced "what may collectively be their most compelling and sexually charged contribution to the adult industry."

      Now, there's another contender.

In Underworld Drake is again the center, beginning from the first sex scene, in which her character, Tanya, makes love to her fiancé (Steven St. Croix) in his apartment. Soon after, as they head to the underground garage so he can drive Tanya home, they're assaulted by armed thieves, who shoot Tanya when she tries to fight back. Critically injured, she finds herself in the Underworld, where the ill and the wounded linger while they wait to meet their fate.

Before that meeting, however, many others take place as Tanya treks through the Underworld-each a manifestation of the traumatic proceedings around her. Julia Ann represents the ventilator to which she's attached, while Xander Corvus is the scalpel that invades her body. In blood-red outfits, Asa Akira, Eric Masterson and T.J. Cummings are the transfusions Tanya receives in her hospital bed, while Asphyxia Noir and Toni Ribas represent the stitches the operation leaves behind.

With the wrong execution this all could come across as a cold conceit, but the art direction (with assists from Kylie Ireland and Andy Appleton) and production work do service to the narrative, ensuring that attention stays fixated exactly where it should: on the storyline and the seven passionate sex scenes cast as directed by Armstrong and captured by crack cinematography (Francois Clousot, Alex Ladd and Paul Woodcrest)\

Edit: I've just spent 15 minutes looking for porn reviews…on hubby's laptop. Why? o.O

      • @wiki, I don't think you should be recommending movies that you've haven't personally see..wait wat? why are you using my work laptop to look for porn o.o

        • JJB, you really need to clear your history =P

        • @ProjectZero: Do employees actually get in trouble for watching porn on their work computers? o.O I always thought that was an empty threat.

        • @Jar Jar Binks:

Not sure, but it is funny as hell if someone got caught doing it lol.

Also, how the hell does anyone have time for that at work…

    • I tried the "buffering.." technique I learnt from internet porn on the mrs, didn't work very well. :)

might stir a few, but i reckon fads - planking etc i find a bit blah compared to the days when yo-yos and ice pole stick boomerrangs got all the attention. just find now everything is self-indulgent and attention seeking where as before it use to be a skill or self expression thing.

might as well toss in collectable cards e.g. footy cards etc. whilst the product might be of higher manufactured qaulity there are to many 'special' cards and over designed presentations on them. couldnt give a hoot if they changed colour at night, reflected blah blah.

Most kids board games, like Guess Who, Operation and Kerplunk. I was excited buying these for my kids at Christmas but sooo disappointed when opening and finding they were complete rubbish! So cheaply made that they barely function. If you have the originals, hold on to them!

Singer and sunbeam appliances. They used to be brands that you knew you could buy and the product would be always be reliable.

    • Kambrook heater became a Kam-broke in a month for me. Thought paying more meant better quality, never again.

Went to K-mart and got a cheap Abode heater for less than half the price, still kicking.

Kenwood kitchen appliances and car audio as well. Used to be very popular brand products in the old days.

Also the Starathfield car radios stores. Can't believe they are still around. Used to be the goto place for cheap electrical, home entertainment, mobile accessories and car audio. Still a few stores around but haven't been to one for years. Much better online deals and stores around these days.

Oportos, does anyone remember their chilli sauce before they went commercialised and started placing them in bottles?

The chilli sauce back then was genuine! And the burgers tasted a lot better too…

Now it's just another run of the mill chicken burger you can get anywhere.

That stuff used to also come ready to eat in a can - available in the baked beans aisle. I know this for a fact as I used to buy it and eat it despite it being rather disgusting. And delicious. So creamy and cheesy and.. gross.

I cannot find it anywhere now. It's been years since I've had it and weirdly enough I've had real cravings for it… the tinned stuff, not the cook-it-yourself from a packet stuff.

Has anyone else seen them anywhere?? Or at least can anyone else confirm they DID indeed exist at some point, so I feel less crazy?

    My list

    • Quilton toilet paper. Still good, but less sheets and thinner these days.

    • Aldi facial tissues. Use to be softer, now hard as a rock.

    • Those cheap $0.85 facial tissues from the asian grocery stores. They have kept the price and the size of the box the same but now the tissues are tiny in size! You can shake the box like a maracas.

    • Morning Fresh dishwashing liquid since they moved production from Australia to Indonesia.

    • Sony products. You use to be happy to pay a premium for their products, i.e. Trinitrons, Walkmans, Discmans, MD players. now they are no better than Samsung- I would have laughed in your face and called you crazy if someone said that 20 years ago (both fall of Sony and rise of Samsung, but I still think Samsung products are pretty shit and unreliable).

    • Bonds products, use to be fairly cheap AND good quality. Now it's not so cheap and not so good quality.

    • BMW. They use to be the ultimate driving machine and were excellent in the E46 era. Now, they aren't worth the premium and I'd buy a Merc instead.

All of the above most likely have come from cost cutting to increase profits, except for Sony which I believe is failing (and losing a ton of money) due to poor management and lack of innovation.

Please Rolex do not cheapen your brand and destroy the resale of my current watches. In fact, increase the price please! lol

    • +1

Sony has become an insurance company and they just don't know it yet!

The insurance arm of Sony is covering the looses that the other arms are racking up!

      http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/28/business/global/sonys-brea…

      • Great article!

    • In fact, increase the price please! lol

They already have. Seems to have little relevance to resale though.

      • Of course it does, hence why you can sell a 10yo submariner for more today than the original rrp.

That would only happen because the new one keeps increasing in rrp.

Australia hasn't increased the prices of the submariner & GMT (the only Rolex's that I track) for years (US has increase it 4 times in the past 5 years). I think it's only a matter of before Aust does because you can buy a Rolex here cheaper than the USA due to the fall of the AUD.

        • Rolex resale on Subs always strong. It is one of the most iconic watches ever made, the continuation of the original styling (with very minor tweaks) is testament to that. Most of the seriously iconic collector watches have a strong resale value. Interesting to compare the resale of a Sub/Daytona/GMT against the resale of a Datejust/President to see how the iconic status of the model affects resale.

Omega are increasing their prices to try and move up a notch in the Swatch group and be a competitor to Rolex. I havent checked but I know their Aqua Terra price has increased recently and it is increasing 2nd hand values accordingly

    • +1

      Bonds also made in China.

    • Actually, you might get better resale value if Rolex does cheapen themselves (People might want the "real Rolex", not the cheapened one).

Kudos to you for having a fancy watch, it seems that I don't mix well with those. I got a mechanical watch as a present (used one, my uncle got a new one). It's so hard to keep it working. So many things I have to consider… Have to wear it all the time or must wind it…

      • Hopefully Rolex will never cheapen themselves to chase profitability. It will be a spiral, once it becomes cheap, no one will want to pay the premium for it. Fortunately I doubt it every happen because Rolex doesn't have shareholders to answer to. And when you make a billion dollars or so of profit(as it's not a listed company, it's not public info), you don't want to risk your market status. In fact, Omega are trying to emulate Rolex by increasing their prices in recent years much more than Rolex has (as a percentage).

Thanks, I've always like watches and was always keen on owning a Rolex. Was close to buying one 5 years ago (and had the means to) but I waited until I paid off the vast majority of my non-deductive debt before spending an illogical sum on money on a piece of jewelery that only tells me the time! lol Having a few watches of various brands, I must admit the build quality and attention to detail of Rolex's are excellent even though it doesn't jump out to you immediately, as a new Rolex looks similar to a 20 year old Rolex to the untrained eye.

Having a few watches also lets me relate to you. I'll be selling or giving away some of my watches and only keeping 2 mechanical (automatic) watches. I can alternate wearing each one daily, that way each watch will never stop.

    • Personally, I think Bonds are good quality for what you pay. I refuse to pay full price for Bonds as they always have huge sales online (40-50% off) and who doesn't love free postage. I agree that it's expensive when full price though. I haven't They're great for baby clothes and keep their shape when washed.

Edited: On second thoughts, I only buy the socks, underwear and baby clothes, so I can't comment on their adult clothing.

      • Their Bonds Raglan Tee shirts are definitely a shadow of their former self.

Their socks are ok but I wouldn't say good quality. I bought a 3 pack of their sports socks this year (at Coles for like $6), compared to my 5 yo pierre cardin sports socks ($2 from Malaysia) or Nike ones, the cotton doesn't feel that absorbent, even though it's cotton, it feels more like polyester.

The reason why I mentioned Bonds is my two kids which are 1 & 3. We use to buy Bonds baby clothes, socks and romper suits but found that weren't very good quality, lose its shape and would pill.

So these days, for basics we buy generally baby clothes from Cotton On, Pumpkin Patch, Zara, Target and Best and Less. They are always regularly on sale and no more expensive than Bonds, with the exception of Best and Less. Don't laugh, we were very surprised with the quality of Best and Less. I wouldn't wear them myself but some of the B&L baby clothes is actually very good.

I must admit Cotton On is sometimes a hit and miss with quality.

CC's. Used to be hugely popular before the dorito train came in.
I bought a pack recently and it was just a bunch of broken chips, won't be making that mistake again.

Also the Galaxy S series from samsung. The S2 and 3 were massive hits, now it's just seen as an inferior version of the note series and sales are way down.

    • +2

Brands rise and fall though. Doritos were a legitimate competitor to CCs back in the day. Now we have Mission (uoissiw) which are better than either I reckon.

    • I don't agree with the S series complaint. It was always the case as Samsung tested stuff with the Note series.

Gotta be Nando's. Used to be somewhat pricey, high quality. Now its prices are approaching those of restaurants, but the quality has dropped significantly, due to lax franchising standards.

    • +6

seems like every man and his dog is opening up a Nandos franchise.

My local used to be owned by a Filo couple. Great service, great food and place looked clean.

Now it's run one Indian bloke who's hired all his mates and their little kids. Place is filthy and chicken was cold on the inside.

Domino's Pizza - back in the day, they used to be bigger. Price has gone up (but goes back down with voucher codes), and size has definitely shrunk. ESPECIALLY if you order their premium range, ridiculously tiny!

    • Voucher codes are fun though, and it's easier than having to deal with paper vouchers. If there are no decent vouchers I'll usually take my tight arse business elsewhere :)

    Transformers

They used to be robots in disguise that required skill to transform. Now they take little imagination and about 3 moves to change. No wonder the old ones are selling for a small fortune on ebay.

    • I believe on the AOE line the mantra was to make things simple. Especially after the Leader Class ROTF Prime. That one was a marvel of engineering. Hopefully going forward they make it somewhat complex and not have large backpack kibble like the AOE range had. Kinda disappointing when the marketing says Transforms in so so steps.
