Sony BDP S3200 Blu-Ray Player was $88 now $99 (RRP $139), Free Delivery (Most Loc'ns), VIDEOPRO

150

Our blu-ray player died recently and have been through the ringer trying to get a suitable replacement since. Bought a Panasonic only to find it had one outlet only (hdmi) which means I couldn't use my older home theatre for sound. This Sony player has digital/coaxial audio out which is critical for my current setup - something to ponder if you're updating.

VIDEOPRO is cheapest by a large margin ($25+)

Something to note for Pana buyers: Panasonic will organise to have your player multi-regioned for free while under warranty.

Edit: the Bose QC3 noise cancelling headphones are again on sale at $297. Other Jan "specials" (check around) can be found here: https://www.videopro.com.au/cf-402--january-clearance-sale.a…

Nice price and these are a good unit. Has all the catchup-TV services (except for channel 9's), plays a lot of video formats via USB and they're relatively simple to use and setup.

    • Does it get SBS On Demand?
I've been trying to get that working on my Samsung TV, to no avail, for some reason.

      • +1

        yes
        iView, SBS, Ten and Seven

  • Is it quiet? Currently just using a PS3 Slim for blurays, and it's louder than I'd like.

    • yes

If you are looking for a decent soundbar you can pick up this bluray player for free with this deal at DS http://www.dicksmith.com.au/soundbars/sony-muteki-soundbar-b…

It was $260 the other day using a $40 discount code. The soundbar alone retails for $399 RRP.

  • Something to note for Pana buyers: Panasonic will organise to have your player multi-regioned for free while under warranty.

    Just for DVDs?

    • Apparently both but check with Panasonic's tech agents.

      • What does this have to do with a Sony Bluray player?

        • Not a lot. Something I discovered after ringing Pansonic au. Thought it could be useful to others doing the same research, simple as that. Kudos to P-AU

      • I doubt that it is also for BR region but am happy to be proven wrong. Everything that I could find about multi region Panasonic players only mentioned DVD region.

        • Yes it appears to be very murky. The player I bought for my relos (and the one I returned) was multi-regioned by PAU's techos. If I get my hands on an out of region bluray I'll test it. All mine are region B - either Eu or Oceania.

    • if you need a blu ray that can play all regions abc then you either need to have one chipped or i found the laser bd2000… seems to work for me but you need to select the region in the settings

Note: this player does not play 3D discs.

Sony player has optical/coaxial audio out which is critical for my current setup

    "Optical/coaxial audio" is non-"HD".

    • Not sure what you mean by HD in regard to audio. This connection gives me 5.1, stereo etc and (as I discovered yesterday) according to some gives better sound for CDs and DVDs than hdmi.

      • +1

HD audio means Dolby TrueHD an DTS-HD MA - these are both lossless audio formats.

        • Thanks. Checked and the other outlet is actually DIGITAL Coaxial PCM/DTS/Dolby Digital. Have amended the post accordingly.

Got it for $92.80 last year (+ $50 good guys credit). That was luck when all the worlds alligned.

The user interface is a little clunky, but it does the job.

    • Thanks for the deflationary comment Qroozn. Timing is everything.

I bought this from Eastwood Hifi just after Christmas for about $150.

I've found it to be a great player. It loads very quickly and the picture is excellent. Connecting to my home network was simple.

The remote is a bit small and cheapish but does the job.

Internet content is hit and miss. There's a lot on there but it didn't pique my interest. I'm more of a disc man so I'm more concerned in its ability to play blurays etc. And it does this very ably.

I recommend it highly. And at that price it's a bargain.

    • My mistake.

I bought the S5200 which is 3D capable. But apart from that the two appear to have identical features.

      Sorry for any confusion caused.

      • If this series is similar to last, S5 series has wifi. S3 series does not. There's bound to be other differences too. Some of us OzBargainers got the S5100 when it was discontinued and sold for $99.

        • I linked to the specs above. This player has wifi.

The only differences between it and the S5200 are 3D, BD9 (BDAV) support, and higher power consumption (9.5w for s3200/11.5W for the 5200)

        • @Possumbly: Incorrect. There's other differences. Google and see. I stand corrected about WiFi - S3100 didn't have it.

        • @Gav: I revisited the 2 specs on the Sony website side-by-side just for you and what I wrote is the result.

Does this do multi-region dvd? A quick Google search is inconclusive…thanks in advance

    • +1

Yes. I have this model at home and I play uk and japanese dvd and blu ray.

      • So you manually change over the region settings for foreign blurays? Is it easy?

      • FYI, I bought one but it is NOT region free for DVDs :(
but otherwise it's quite a capable machine, finds my DLNA NAS and also does Miracast (something nobody seems to have mentioned).

  • Has anyone received their players or shipping confirmation yet?

    • Yep got mine delivered to Canberra yesterday. It appears they don't confirm the order until it's packed. Might be worth doing as I did as a prompt - use their online chat facility and ask where it's at.

      • Got mine yesterday from Videopro clearance outlet at the Brisbane DFO. On sale for $89. It's not on their website though. Sale ends 27/01/15.

Just tried it out and have to say I am impressed. Connects to my media server and plays all the formats (the ones I have anyway) as well as playing CD's, DVD's and Blu rays. Makes a good replacement for a WDTV depending on your needs.
