Instant Coffee - Avalanche 500g Tin at Woolworths - $3 [Selected Stores]

1080

Super cheap, probably awful, instant coffee only 3 bucks.
Never heard of Avalanche brand before but probably no worse than International Roast or the old time Pablo coffee.
Great for friends you don't like or for crappy takeaway stores selling coffee you can't stomach.
Have one of these and Hungry Jacks coffee will taste fantastic from now on.
Nescafe for the same size tin is around $20.
Did I say it's cheap?

Saw many boxes of them at Woolies Southport. Use by date was start of 2016 but I doubt this will improve with age.

Upvoted just because of the description :)

Funnily enough I don't seem to mind any coffee. As long as it's black and no sugar.

ill drink it if its just black, doesnt need to even have coffee!!

I gonna buy this as I reckon it could get rid of the onion weed problem that I have on my lawn

    Plus for the humour, OP!

Oh no my inlaws are definitely going to go for this bargain and serve it up to me next visit - crap :(

    • +1

u should visit their local store and buy up all the stock so they can't serve it up to you!

Don't put yourself or your deal down if you haven't tried it yourself. I've been drinking this stuff for a while it's as decent as any other brand. These guys have also been around for a while with their hot choc.

    • Thanks. You are correct, never assume I suppose.

you should stock up if your local has it for $3.

    • Good to have feed back from someone who has actually tasted it.
Most of the comments above are based on "its cheap so it must be no good"..

      • I've tried it, it has a very funny smell to it, not coffee like at all

      • +1

I tried it last night. Not good and like elh05 says , it smells a bit funny.

I guess its just OK at instant coffee for $3 but I would never buy again.

  • Avalanche - named for the apparent reversal effect after drinking this "substance'

    • You have tried it and didn't like it???

  • +1

Not Nescafe Blend 43, not cool

Australia has come a long way in a short time with coffee. The Pablo instant coffee that was a fixture of all Australian homes in the 60s and 70s has now mercifully been overtaken by the plunger, stovetop percolator and state-of-the-art kitchen bench coffee machines. People can't go anywhere without a take away coffee glued into their hands and the barista is now Australia's most revered and trusted occupation. - The Guardian Australian edition, 8 Oct., 2013

Perhaps we haven't come all that far…

Came here for the comments. Was not disappointed.

The amount of expert opinions from those that have never tried it… hysterical !! :-) :-)

      • +1

There's certainly "experts" out there but it seems to me there's also a whole bunch of audiophile level idiocy out there as well (naturally science no longer plays a part on these "experts" abilities to discern tastes so confirmation bias no longer applies and they can taste the "art" that goes into making coffee that a machine can't reproduce yada yada. And other idiocy which basically implies the drinker is magical).

        • But friendship drinking is magic. (Sorry, the word magic compelled me to write this.)

        • Yes, can't wait for head phone wearing hipsters to go on about giving their coffee adequate burn-in. Makes it taste better you see.

@rodericb: You have to change the power cables to silver cables and the heating coil has to be 99.9% gold for the best flavour. I personally prefer coffee boiled with 110V power, the lower voltage drags out that minute details that I really like. When I feel eccentric, I drink coffee boiled with 250V power, it gives it that umph that I prefer.

I feel slightly sad, since I consider myself an "audiophile", but meh, I see where youse are coming from.

  • International Roast FTW! :)

    • Should be called International Gross..

      • International Roast Caterers Blend is a very nice coffee, Way better than that 43 bean rubbish!.

        • BS, Blend 43 is one of the best of the instants, (behind Moccona)

        • Once upon a time I was able to stomach all the instant coffees, but as I grew older anything instant now makes me sick :(

  • Cant believe the votes this crap is getting, if i tried to pick up this off the shelf My missus would have a fit lol
Me, If I have a coffee its got to be beans (missus has a instant in the mornings).

    • I'll have a frappe every now and then. I dont know if this stuff is spray dried or not, I usually use Nescafe.

Sh*ts me how hipsters keep trying to make a frappe from espresso. Its not a bloody espresso drink you tosspots, and it won't work unless you use instant.

  • I don't know anything about coffee…but having trialled the Avalanche hot chocolate, it's quite good.

  • +1

Avalanche brand chocolate powder is fantastic. I don't do instant, I have my beloved coffee machine.

I've told my boss about this deal and he's going to buy 2, I'll let you know next week if I still have a job.

  • While you're there keep an eye out for christmas stock of Poppycock tins going at $4. It's like Lollygobble Blissbombs but with nuts too.

  • +1

"Great for friends you don't like…"

Almost sprayed my drink through my nose as I lolled. Drinking coffee naturally ;)

Haven't tried this brand's cofee. However, as already mentioned, their chocolate powder is (really, really) goddam delicious.

Has anyone actually seen this at $3 other than the op ?

  • Hmmm… I wonder when I go back to work whether my employer would have stocked up on these for us slaves.

  • I use this in my bathroom to get rid of smell

  • +1

i dont get it, here we have a whole container for $3, yet many of us would pay $4 for just a cup served over the counter!?

are we not ozbargainers or what!??!?!

    • +1

True ozbargainers would just drink water. From the tap. In a cup with 'coffee' written on the side. And that 'coffee' is written with a permanent marker and the cup is actually a foam cup. Which they rinse out and re-use.

Or slightly out of date Moccona instant indulgence which was marked down 75%, in a noritake cup from Harris Scarfe which was marked down by 80%!

100 votes, wow. Thanks for liking the deal.

For those wondering, I ended up buying a tin and trying the coffee.
Um, it's pretty awful and has a funny aroma, nothing like Blend43 - reminds me of some really cheap stuff that I have had in a few hotel rooms. Worth $3? I guess so, but I wont buy it again.
Buy it for your local club house for free coffee, or like I mentioned serve it up to people you don't like.

hey there PVA - thanks for the post - went and bought a tin to try - it's not too bad! it's definitely not attrocious! I like my 43 bean (preferred instant), and i'll have bought coffee here and there, got a MAP coffee pod machine on the desk etc I like all coffee. The good thing about instant is you know what your getting i.e. no variables. Anyhow this Avalanche stuff seems to be reasonably decent to me. It's from NZ (brew) so that also gives me the perception of quality (clean food…) yep worth a roll I say.

  • Went to my local Woolworths at Marion and it was $15 :(

    • Yep same - i tried a couple WWs in sydney and the premium granulated was $15 and the normal Avalanche coffee tin was $10!

  • +1

I bought Avalanche Premium for $10 - the more I have it, the more I like it!

  • i ran out of milk one day so i drank a few cups of black coffee (no sugar). suprising i very quickly became accustomed to the taste after a cup or two and now i drink black coffees all the time.
