Are these new? I don't recall seeing them before. How do they compare to the dark roast?

    • +3

medium, roast imo much better than the aldi medium roast.

Aldi dark roast is just….dark roasted. Your not gonna taste much other than your normal nutty/chocolate because most of the flavours has been roasted off where as a medium roast has more flavour profiles in general.

If you prefer a very rich more stronger, stick to the dark roast, if you want to taste more nuisances such as blackcurrent fruit, the luxe is pretty good.

I actually prefer the luxe as a fruity aspect isn't too overpowering but not boring.

      • +2

I love my flavour palette being pleasantly disturbed fruity notes of nuisances!

  • Do they have pre ground too?

    • +3

I didn't notice but wasn't looking. I have been told not to buy pre-ground coffee because it goes stale quicker.

Coffee Nerds will tell you it should actually be used as soon as you grind.

      Whole bean only afaik

  • What is happening with the medium dark whole beans? I went to the 4 different Aldis in Brisbane and all sold out!

Bought some a week ago no problem.

I bought this Luxe blend a while back and thought they were inferior to the medium dark beans.

      • @lunchbox99 I agree with you.
I have been able to get some great results from the Aldi darker blends but was disappointed with the Luxe.

I tend towards the fruitier Ethiopian beans but am happy to experiment with darker roasts; after a little experimentation with their darkest blend the results were great.

I've tried these as well but found the single origin Brazil beans better.

        • Agree, Brazil beans is still the best for us.
Tried luxe & dark roast, luxe tend to be more fruity, while dark roast is just too bland.

Might be something to do with the markets. According to commodities chart, coffee has increased by 150% this year, and 2/3rds of that was in the last month
      https://www.nasdaq.com/market-activity/commodities/kt-nmx

It's in $US/pounds, and at the current price thats equivalent to about aud$10/kg.

edit: Thats also for green beans. You need an extra 20% to account for moisture loss during roasting, making the wholesale price closer to $12/kg.

    • They don't roast very often. Which is why I can't buy them anymore. Got some fresh purple and now 3 months later..same purple still being cleared.

    • I spoke with an Aldi manager today and they said the product could have been discontinued. They said it doesn’t come up in their system any more.

  • Pretty sure it's been this price for a while.

This is an exceptionally good coffee 💯 But, I still use it as a backup when I run out of other well known roasters.

The quality control is terrible with these. First few bags I tried were divine. Then two bags in a row that had a horrible bitter/off taste that's was so overpowering I couldn't finish the cup. I could've just been unlucky and when it's good it's really good but I have been turned off this as a result

Their single origin is more consistent and slightly cheaper.

  • How are they WN? Worth the extra spend over the go-to medium roast? Can't imagine they would be much/better for 40% more.

    • +1

I haven't tried it. Yes medium roast is my go to as well.

    • +1

My n=1 is the Medium roast is better overall. In a Breville dual boiler.

      • Agree it's the best for the price any find it quite good enough for espresso and milk coffee (using Gaggia classic and sunbeam em0480)

    • I can't drink the standard ALDI medium roast. I think this one is near enough quality to something like Five Senses, at half (if not more) the price. Everyone that comes over says how good the coffee is too.

      YMMV.

  • i tried these and thought they were nice but a bit bland

nowdays i mix the dark and medium aldi beans 50/50 = $13.50 a kilo for the win

  • Tried these, and they were much tastier than the regular medium roast.
However, I haven't been able to find any in stock for the last several weeks. Managed to grab one today finally.

  • Roast dates on these seem a bit shit. I got some which were very fresh but months later they're still clearing the same date. Suspect stock turn just not as good as the cheaper stuff.
