Thoughts on My Gaming P/C under 2k Budget ?

Hi guys,
It's been around 5 years since I've got my first computer and I believe it is time to get a new one entirely. What do you guys think about my current setup that I may potentially purchase ?
I want to be able to play Dayz on high graphics and other games such as WoW. Thankyou in advance !

  • Thats a pretty good build, except the motherboard isnt compatible.

    • What motherboard do you suggest?

  • Well you could change your processor to something a bit newer if you'd prefer.
But if you want to stick with that CPU maybe something like

    This
^The only thing in your price range, other LGA2011 motherboards are much dearer, your probably better off spending more on a newer cpu (LGA1150) and keeping your current motherboard.

  • Might want to spend more on your wireless NIC, 2.4ghz 802.11N is extremely overcrowded and if you're an multiplayer gamer you're going to want to reduce interference.

Go for dual band 5ghz wireless (router must be compatible as well) or get a big long spool of good old LAN cable (way better and reliable than any sort of wireless tech)

  • +4

You've got an LGA2011 CPU and an LGA1150 motherboard. You'll want the 4790K rather than the 4820K.

  • +2

I'd go a 500gb ssd samsung 840 evo vs a newer 256gb ssd 850 pro, then again, im not too clear on the differences
keep the mb if you want, you'll won't notice a huge difference after a i5-4690k
    go dual band as above
750W PSU is good choice, gives you room for 2nd card if you decide to get one

EDIT: I'd also go for a CPU cooler since you're getting a "K" series processor, guess you wanna overclock. I've got the coolermaster hyper 212 evo (158.5mm) and it's pretty good. fits in my case and my case is 206mm wide and yours looks to be 229 wide so you hopefully should have no isses

    • Great advice.

The 500GB EVO may even be faster than the 256GB Pro. Sometimes the higher capacity SSDs are like RAIDed versions of their smaller brothers.

You may also being overspeccing the RAM. You could try 2 * 4GB and see how that goes. Upgrade if its actually RAM slowing you down.

If you save $300 on RAM and CPU, and spend the savings on monitor, keyboard, mouse and speakers you will almost certainly get more enjoyment.

  • i5 is still the sweet spot so if I were you I'd get an i5 but ensuring there is an upgrade path. Then again I am not a gamer and I would never ever spend more than $1000 on any computer. To give you an idea my fastest PC at home is a Dell i3, and recently I've just put together an AMD A10-6800K based desktop which cost me about $300 all up.

  • 5820K + Asrock X99 Extreme 4 + 16GB DDR4 2133MHz. Unity, Inquisition, and FC4 can use up to 8 threads (FC4 lesser degree). Plus Watch Dogs and Ryse son of Rome. You want another 5yrs box, you want a hexa core.

    • I'm not an Asrock fan as I have seen stories of burning motherboards. But that's just me being cautious.

I would get a pci express wireless card as it has more stable signal and speed. There's no contention to that.

The samsung evo may be a tad faster but doesn't last as long as pro. All my ssds are pros because I know I can reuse them over and over again for future builds without worrying about its lifespan.

Finally, I would definitely increase the psu for futureproof. Maybe to 850w because that's the standard for sli graphics card or maybe future upgrades require more power If you intend to always stick to one psu then 750 is fine.

I'm sure other ozbargainers can provide input on cpu and motherboard because what you have is clearly incompatible (2011 chip in 1150)

  • Why are you getting a USB Wireless Adapter? Why not get a PCIE one? Should get better performance that way

  • Sorry to hijack your thread, I don't think this question is worth a new thread - but has anyone here bought a GPU from eBay where the seller is advertising a low price and high postage? Like this

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/221641906019

for example? Seems a tad on the 'too good to be true' side of things for mine, but I'm curious in case someone has had a successful experience before!
