Just had a look at the details. Their concept of "bumping" confuses me… If there are no additional cost, why would anyone sign up for anything greater than the "S" plan?

    • +1

That is what I did - just signed up for the S for all (except for data, I know I'm going to use 2gb a month). Sounds like a good deal to me!

      • Compare it to Optus "My Prepaid Daily [Plus], which seems subtly similar.

=== Update after getting a Vaya ad (beside my Masters deal page of OzB); It offered:

For $18 / mon (Initially: $20 for SIM-pack only, No Contract):

        • $650 Calls ($0.35 flagfall + $0.90 Min (!), don't ring out, just SMS.

        • Unlimited SMS

        • 1.5 GB Data (but with what Block size? It may be 1 MB with Vaya:

        Vaya's 4G "Data Only" plans may deduct-from-quote or charge by 1 Mb blocks: ($0.04 / Mb) $40 / GB (!)
(So, 1.5 GB quota won't go as far as it they used 1 KB instead of 1 MB blocks)

        ====

Oh, well, it looked good, before I read the fine print…

Other fees, eg, to exit or not take mob.no. with you? 'dunno

        ====

Anyway, I'M TIRED OF AUSSIE MOBILE VENDORS' LOW VALUE-FOR-MONEY "DEALS" …PHOOEY!

(Elsewhere Unlimited Mobile Data, etc. plans are well-priced… Why not in AU?!?)

    • Some charge you for NOT taking the number they provide with you, when you leave. Do these guys?

Oh, & what's the Data Block size they charge for, eg, if you send 1 Byte. (Optimal: 1 KB))

      • -4

        They calculate per MB increment

        • +5

Where did you find this information? They bill in KB (at least according to their own website).

          I looked here:
          https://www.spintel.net.au/static/critical_summary/Critical_…
          and found this:
"Data is calculated for both downloads and uploads and rounded in KB (per session"

        • @mini_wombat: Found it here:

          https://www.spintel.net.au/downloads/SpinTel-Mobile-Pricing-…

          Section 4.2.3(c)iii said this:

Data usage will be counted in megabytes where 1 megabyte (MB) = 1000 kilobytes (KB).

        • @aaronbaron:

Thanks a lot … not really clear what they do when they have different T&Cs.Crazy … So which one is correct?

We still have some time to find out until the deal starts …

        • @mini_wombat:

Billed in KB. I think they used to or were contemplating billing in per MB a while ago and haven't spotted every reference to per MB in their amended agreement docs.

        • @Jezzzzza:

Great to know … I heard a few times they bill in kb … might sign up over the christmas period. Does anyone know if they ask for a deposit for roaming … I am still on TPG and they wanted 500$ … no way I would give that to them (it's just to be able to receive the security SMS for your bank accounts and the emergency call when the local sim does not work).

    • No one …

but as soon as you are on a higher plan you need to make sure you reset it for the next month (otherwise they leave you on the higher plan). It's their business model. Pretty fair and great value in my opinion. Hope they are around for a long time.

  • ouch, I ordered in Nov hoping for a promotion.

    • Dammit I did the same thing and had to pay the $25
Sim still hasn't been shipped though, wonder if I can haggle them about this lol!

  • Referral is a joke refered 2 friend and still nothing

    • And Nothing is what you'll continue to get, unless/until you follow-up.
If need be, f'up again with TIO.

      • +1

Can you guys confirm if you met this criteria?

"Once your friend or family member has signed up and they have paid their first 2 monthly invoices, the credits on both your accounts are applied."

  • No matter what you choose or use, your min cost is $18 / mon

(So, I assume these guys get maybe $15 / mon if you choose the "S" plan.)

Actually. I see it as a reply to Optus's "My Prepaid Daily [Plus]"… BUT not competitive, IMO:

    • the 3 elements of service seem just like a monthly Service Fee of just under $18 / mon

    • there are NO Zero-Cost days (ie, the main Feature of Optus My PrePaid Daily: $0 / mon,
. when you're overseas an entire month, use a "local" SIM for better rates)

    • SMS's are still overpriced, IMO

    • changes only have effect on a monthly basis (why not Daily, like Optus's deal?)

    With Optus, you can designate a phone "Incoming-Calls ONLY" for $12 / 6 mon = $2 / mon.

If you have cheap ADSL+WiFi at home or in your office, each such mobile could be online
(eg, for Outgoing VoIP calls via MyNetFone or Skype &/or in an online meeting via Zello)

Of course, Skype's messaging if Free (device or computer to either, elsewhere).

There's no reason for Grand-ma/-pa to be out of touch anymore.

    • Why would you believe they are a reply to my prepaid daily? Certainly if you don't use your phone often the My prepaid daily's are good, but for the rest of us, spintel are awesome. I used to be on Boost, switched over, and I now pay less, for more and get 4G as well.
I just make sure to go in every so often and reset my plan to the lowest one. There is no penalty for doing this. My average is about $30 per month. Except where I used 3.5Gig of data one month (Rdio!!) and it went up to $40 ($10/Gig above the cap).

Personally I find them the best plan for my usage patterns.

  • -4

Anyone know how data is charged? Is it per MB increment for both up and down stream?

EDIT: Just found it. Per MB increment

        • Conflicted info here on data, can anyone confirm?

        • Very confusing … I checked the document you are linking and it mentions standard mobile pricing (from 2012 with the Build Your Own 4G Mobile Plan) . All the plans mentioned there are outdated … but the document is still linked on their main website. I guess somebody didn't update this document … but anyone who signs up should check with them in my opinion …

        • +1

          @arctan:

          Billed in KB

"Data is calculated for both downloads
and uploads and rounded in KB (per session)." - In the CIS

And the online usage meter also has daily breakdowns eg. 4.62MB - 21 December 2014, 87.98 MB - 20 December 2014 etc.

  • Tempted, I love Optus but I can go days on pre-paid without sending a call or text but I VERY often need that data connection to do my job. So I find it charges me $1 to run a number plate… getting very expensive. Definately going to be looking at this deal when I get home.

  • Can someone explain this bumping quote:
"For even better value, if you’re bumped up part-way through the billing month, you’ll receive the full option amount rather than the pro-rata amount for that billing month."

Does that mean if you get bumped, you get FULL amount of the bumped included minutes/text/data?

I.e, if you are on S plan and you get 50 minutes, after 50 minutes you get bumped to M plan which is 250 minutes, do you get the 250 minutes or 250-50 = 200 minutes?

    • You get a further 200 minutes.

The easiest way to think about it is, at the END of the month if you use:

      0-50 minutes - $6
      50-250 minutes - $7
      250-500 minutes - $9
      500+ minutes (unlimited) - $12

  • It looks like international SMSes and calls are charged separately.

    Great timing!

  • isn't it vaya a better value?

Hey guys, I moved from Vaya to Spintel about 3 months ago when Vaya had an issue with their data charging service. So far so good. They bill per kbs (see FB page post on 18 Sept).

Problems - I was charged the $25 postage fee even when I put in the promo code back in Sept 2014 (see their post on 18 Sept 2014). I put a message on their Facebook page and it was resolved in a few hours by a lady called Gina- it beats calling up!

So far my experience has been good. I order everything in medium, and i have been bumped up once for exceeding the call limit. Cost me an extra $2 or so. It does work, and haven't been charged any excess fees or other charges as yet. No issues so far.

Vaya may be better value IMO but i got charged $50 for exceeding call limit once, hence I opted to move to Spintel.

  • +1

Most things have been covered already so I'll just add bits and pieces:

    • Spintel's auto-bumping feature is designed to assist bill shock not to provide the best value each month. Whatever you have been bumped to the previous month (eg. M L XL), is what you will start with next month - M L XL. You can put a plan request change online before the start of your billing period to S S S which takes effect the following bill cycle.

    • Autobumps are charged in the following invoice. Eg. You selected S S S for December and paid this access fee of $18 in advance. If you were bumped to S S M, your January invoice will show (S S S $18CR - December Access Fee paid) + (S S M $19 - Final December Access Fee) + (S S S - $18 January Access fee) assuming you requested a downgrade to Ss.

    • The excess data rate of $10/GB for usage past XL was amended to $15/GB effective in 2015. Please be wary of this change if you are an existing customer recommending this service to your friends

    • Order Acknowledgement to Sim Delivery has significantly improved since the September promotion. As with intra-carrier (Optus) port times.

    • That's a bummer for the $15/GB. I thought it was a good value at $10/GB until you disclose this! Why couldn't they do $10/GB?

  • Wonder how timely the processing, shipping and activation will be with the public holidays and vacation period?

I placed my order on Friday 19 before this deal started and order still at processing.

    • "For orders placed between 18th December 2014 and 2nd January 2015, there will be a delay in service activation and hardware (including SIM card) deliveries due to the holiday period."
      https://www.spintel.net.au/christmas

      • DOH! Didn't notice the orders section… must scroll the whole page.

well done chkchkbooooom, I didn't have that much luck last week and was hanging on phone for ages and then dumped the call to get some work done.

Will try the chat box tomorrow

Have been considering Spintel for awhile, good post. Signed up!

  • +1

Yeah i just signed up with Spintel too. I went online and a chat box opened up so within about 45 seconds i was chatting with Primo and advised him I wanted to port 3 numbers over from liveconnected. he then said he wiuld help me with the signup and asked for my mobile number. In less then 10 seconds my phone rang and he did all the work for me over he phone. The only concern I had was when you listen to there CIS statement it does say it charges per mb usage. This was nearly the deal breaker for me, and I questioned Primo and he stated that they charge per kB per session and round up to mb at the end of the month (He did have to confirm this with his manager and I will be peeved if it doesnt work out this way)…. but I have been unhappy with the Liveconnected freeze payment especially when not everyone is paying it so I have been looking around and decided to bite the bullet and give Spintel a go. Oh and he also waived the $25 for each number ported over.

      • waived $25 sim and delivery charges.
  • +1

    good find thanks..op

  • Where do I enter the promo code? Got through to the final page of the signup without seeing anything

    • nevermind, had to use chrome as the website does weird things on firefox

  • Hi,

I want to sign up and use a referral. I need a nano sim for my Sony Z3 but next to the Nano Sim card type selection it says: "A Nano SIM Card is required if you will be using an Apple iPhone 5. This SIM Card is not compatible with other mobile phones."

    Why?????????????????
