PC Upgrades with The Most Benefit (Cheap and Easy)

Hello,

I have had my computer since January 2010 and it's starting to feel a bit slow these days. I tried playing Dragon Age Inquisition on it and although it ran on the lowest settings, the game still didn't run all that smooth.

Can anyone recommend some easy and cheap hardware upgrades that would help benefit my system?

as it's already been stated every game you listed isnt very well optimized except for metro lol.

Slow hardware, don't blame the game. You think GTA V and Witcher 3 will be maxed? And Inquisition is very well optimized.

@ethereal88: Keep telling your self that one mate we all know we have been getting very bad ports alot lately cause of consoles.

    • While I was opening up my computer I saw that the CPU fan actually blocks one of the RAM slots so I only have three available (one left with two currently being used). Can I buy any any RAM stick and use that?

      • I'd try the graphics card first. See if it addresses your concerns (it should for gaming). Then worry about the RAM afterwards if it doesn't. I run 4gb RAM and an older CPU and have no problems.

    • I get the same performance with this gpu. But I bargain hunted on eBay and got mine second hand for about $215 ages ago. No issues except for the increased power bill lol

Honestly - if you are trying to game on a budget, do consider a PS4 / XB1. It costs as much as a Graphics Card and will play games at high FPS for years to come.

Personally I'm a PC gamer (always have been), but sheeze it's not cheap upgrading every 1-2 years just to be able to play games.

I had prefered the PS4 but now that you can buy cheap XB1 keys online that may have tipped the scale.

    • That's something that I might consider when I get a bit older and have moved to my own house and have more space. I can see myself coming back from work and just throwing myself on the couch and turning on the console. Would be for the more casual gamer.

    • yeah, i think best option is ps4..

if u upgrade GPU, there might be other bottlenecks with CPU, RAM etc..
      then more cost…

    • ROFL, rubbish. Barely 30FPS and not even 1080p at barely medium settings.

Believe it or not, heaps of people aren't a part of the PC master race. I was also shocked when I found this out.

    • Did you really just say a console has "High" FPS? lol

  • Another suggestion before spending $$$
    1) go through your control panel and uninstall any/all programs that you don't use
    2) Do a Disk Clean-up & Defragment your HDD
If your still going slow … If possible wipe your computer and re-install Windows and programs from scratch. You might be amazed.
(NOTE for future: this is made a lot easier if you have two HDD's, two physical drives are best, but two virtual drives can almost be as good)
If that still doesn't give you results your after, then do what Ryugen said

    • 1) go through your control panel and uninstall any/all programs that you don't use

Sadly the programs that cause the worst slowdowns are often the hardest to uninstall.

      • …Reminds me or Norton… Why do the laptop manufacturers want to piss us off with Norton trial?

      • Sadly the programs that cause the worst slowdowns are often the hardest to uninstall.

Revo Uninstaller will see to that.

  • Hey OP, sorry something not really related to your post:

If you ever upgrade your Motherboard please let me know. I have a "dead" LGA1156 board which desperately needs a replacement.:)

I don't think your GPU is slow. Your main issue is lack of RAM.

I concur with the person who said to give the PC a clean. So I would get the free version of Bit-Defender (3 months free?) and use it's tools to clean out the registry, sort out your start programs etc etc.

I would also definitely buy more RAM. 4GB if you don't have much money, otherwise 2x8GB sticks.

I don't think SSD's are worth it yet for the money. Try the other two things first.

  • I'm sure someone else has pointed this out but: I have a very similar rig (i7 860, 5770, 4GB) and Dragon Age Inquisition runs well on low-medium settings.

You probably just need to clean up your system (or go full tilt and do a fresh Windows install).

For general performance (load time of Windows & Programs and swapping between windows) you'd get the most out of an SSD. For gaming performance you'd get the most out of a graphics card.

  • For GPU, I highly recommend grabbing a r9 280x off ebay.
They generally go for a bit less than $200 (due to crypto coin), a steal compared to retail imo.
    Some even still have warranty.
    Best bang for buck

Make sure that i5 750 is overclocked to at least 3.5ghz, most of my friends when i did the i5 750 builds of the day with aftermarket cooler ran at 4ghz comfortably. Free speed.

    • I wouldn't OC a system that old. Both of my 45nm Core 2's needed detuning around two years ago for stability. The 750 uses a similar process.

    • I bought my 280x for $150 was a bargain.
