I thought I'd try anyway but only works with active mobile accounts. for all of us who have telstra accounts for other reasons.

  • Can you enter any mobile number, or do they verify it?

    • Would be restricted to the Telstra network. Telstra can't send texts that originate from an Optus or Vodafone number.

        Why not?

        • Good question. I expected like in the past that Telstra would exclude the competitors and stick to services that they had full control of.

So I tried to sign up with a sh*t Optus number and it appears to have worked.

Thank you and please disregard my earlier incorrect comment.

      • They can, if they wanted to, its will be just like how skype can use your number as the outgoing caller ID.

      • From my understanding, I believed they will be sending the texts from "Telstra" and not a number which means you can't reply to it.

Works on my Boost mobile number.

Hey thanks as I had no idea you could do this via Telstra - I have been desktop sms-ing via my ISP hosting account so now I have plenty of credits with both. As Coastie said, definitely works with my Boost mobile service.

All this time I thought Telstra Desktop Messaging was phased out but I was actually thinking of the product before it.

  • From hunting around on the Telstra site, it states that once the 60 free credits are used up (or the 30 day trial term expires) then you can either go on a messaging plan, or attach it to your mobile service with your standard SMS charges.

Does anyone know if that means the SMS charges will come out of the mobile cap? Or will they be charged on top of the cap?
