Why haven't they updated their laptop design since 1901? Honest to god, it's ridiculous. I know a million people who've bought a laptop based on looks because the specs sound "similar enough". Anything IBM (lenovo) is the last thing that anyone with any taste wants to buy.

Seems to be a good price other than the ugly style, will look at it later, might get one if its value for money. I guess they make their money in upgrades judging by the price of half of them. Some of the upgrades would cost hardly anything, yet cost a ton more.

    • +9

Thinkpads have the reputation of being business laptops. They're not marketed towards skittish girls who shriek in delight at the gloss of a Vaio or Mac. The matte black surface is less prone to fingerprints and scratches, and the frame is certainly very solid whilst maintaining a look that is neither elitist nor decrepit.

The above reasons are why you're more likely to find refurbished ThinkPads than most other laptops; they're more likely to survive multiple owners.

      • -1

I'm talking about people who don't know much about computers, and will judge it on looks (which is basically how everyone judges everything they don't know about). I wouldn't buy a car that looked like rubbish no matter the specs. At least no-one would see me with this laptop! Doesn't matter so much then if it looks really old and cheap.

        • +4

and thats exactly why ibm/lenovo is the best - if you see someone with one, you know they're all about performance. If you see one on the used market, you also know that no 15 year old girl with coloured stickers has ever touched it.

          • -1

@voter1: LOL. Not really. Back in boarding school the guy next to me had a IBM which I borrowed as my HD had died. I thought it was going to be rubbish (thinking it was old, I remember when I was around 10 my uncle had one that looked the exact same), turned out it was new model haha. Just looks so damn old.

I haven't followed them too much, I've never seen them as too much of a "value for money" company. Compare the other laptops in this series they sell, they're fairly expensive for the specs, this one is WAY cheaper.

            • +4

@noyesmaybeok: the fact they all look the same is a good thing imo, your 5 year old laptop looks exactly like a new one!

And thieves dont know if they're eyeing something good or crap which is a bonus.

              • -1

@voter1: LOL @ the thieves part. At a glance who'd grab the old looking laptop over everything else in the house! I'd rather have something that looks like the money I spent it on it rather than something I got it at a garage sale.

"If you are concerned about the design"

Of course it's a factor. Are you saying that when buying a car, a house, a TV etc, the design is not a factor?

            • +4

@noyesmaybeok: As others have already mentioned, Thinkpads are targeted at business users rather than the completely clueless. If you are concerned about the design you shouldn't be looking at Thinkpads in the first place, you could venture into the Ideapad line - but you may as well go for another brand.

All Thinkpads will have a minimalist design, some of them are still arguably stylish like the x301.

          • +1

@voter1: Actually I had to clean off heart-shaped sticker residue from the ThinkPad I purchased. It was a solid, quality machine. I like the design.
I would much rather have a second hand ThinkPad than a brand new Acer.

            • @Lacerta: +1 for that

My Acer PC didn't even last me 18 months. Friend is having some problems with Acer laptop. Acer monitor wasn't too bad, just problems with power button.

I built my own PC with mainly ASUS parts and haven't had a problem with it yet

    • +5

You buy a laptop on specs and performance firstly. looks are a bonus.

Anyone that thinks looks comes first should take their money and invest in a handbag, as they would probably get more satisfaction

There's so much scamming basically people who don't know anything can never decide. 90% of the time the saleperson is useless (some chick at Harvey Norman was trying to tell me how the laptop had 12 hour battery life, I asked her what type of battery it had, and she said "err, a laptop battery" as if I asked a stupid question. What a douche. The brochure says 3 hours so why she is even employed is beyond me, it's right there in print), and the specs are extremely misleading. Mhz is a load of rubbish, GB of ram doesn't mean anything if the rest of the laptop sucks, having 1GB of graphics can be far worse than 512mb depending on factors and so forth. It's very confusing for people who don't know much. They'll look at 2 laptops which have similar specs and prices, and pick which one looks better. Pretty simple.

        • sales in harvey norman,JB, Myer, DJ are all crap. Most of them don;t even know core 2 have many specs(such as p8000/t6000)

  • when you click customise the price come up to Sale price: AU$1,199.00 ridiculous

    • AUPCART300909

      Use it.

      • i did, the screen show AU$712.14 for that model, but when you click customise button the price gone up to AU$1,199.00 and then end up AU$1,019.15 after that coupon.
        try your self

        • i got 605.22, no problem at all

        • Make sure you choose the R500, Special mate

    • I don't think we're on the same page. I haven't had the same problem.

      • Could you try again?

        • +1

I think I've just discovered the problem. Try using Firefox. I had the same problem as you when using Internet explorer.

          • @northerly: Trying different browsers always helps. I can't even count the amount of sites that are weird in Firefox, fire up good (cough) old IE6 and they work like a dream.

          • @northerly: I tried both, firefox and IE same problem :(

            • @ubs: Weird, I just did this for a test to compare laptops:

              Intel Core 2 Duo processor T6570 (2.1GHz 800MHz 2MBL2)1
              Genuine Windows Vista Business 64

              Sale Price: AU$898.93
              [AUPCART300909] -AU$134.84
              Estimated total: AU$764.09*

              FF 3.5, Windows 7

              Seems to work fine

              • @noyesmaybeok: i got 605.32

                • @evatron: For the same specs or for the base model? More I think about it, more I lean towards just holding off anyway, desktop still works out better value for money (given I don't need portability anyway).

  • I got this
    Estimated total: AU$1,019.15* ???

  • Oh Sh*t. I've tried it for the 10th time and got $1199 too. Maybe the previous price was an error?? It worked a treat from last night until 2 minutes ago.

  • On the main page for the ThinkPad R Series laptops, I see this…

    ThinkPad R500 15.4'' notebook - Special Offer

    From: AU$1,928.95*
    Sale price: AU$712.14*
    inc. GST

When I click the 'customise and buy' link for the laptop on special at $712.14 the price jumps up on the next page to $1,199!

    What's going on here?

  • Hard not to recommend the following upgrades:

    • T6570 —> P7370 +$77 (about same speed, but uses less power and generates less heat)
    • Vista Basic —> Vista Premium $44 (added features, but more importantly is eligible for Win7 free upgrade)
    • WXGA (1366x768) —> WSXGA+ (1680x1050) +$99
    • 250GB —> 320GB +$27.50
    • 6-cell —> 9-cell +$44

After the upgrades and the 15% off, comes out at $853.09. Nice.

  • I'm having trouble getting the $605 price now. LoL. WEIRD!

  • What is going on here? The price is all over of the place.

  • works fine

    Estimated total: AU$605.32*
    Total savings AU$1,323.63

  • I believe the advertised price of $712.14(excluding coupon) is a pricing error. Lenovo may have corrected it and is currently selling at $1199(excluding coupon). Bad luck for those who missed out.

    • Yeah, but it still says Sale price AU$712.14 and jumps to $1199 when you follow the link to customise.

      • Yeah i know, they'll probably update that soon. Hopefully its the other way around. - $1199 being the error in price, but i doubt it.

    • Still working for me. I just tried for fun, and managed to bring the price down to AU$568.85 by removing the webcam and bluetooth. Great price, if it's the actual deal.

BTW: It works for me in FX, but not in IE.

    • I can still see it fine. Who wants one? Haha

      • Restart your explorer/Firefox and see if it still works.

        • I work with websites, I know how cache works. It is still working sweet. Whether they still sell it at that price though… that's up to them. Even still, by the time I add a few things it gets to $829 even after 15% off, I'd probably rather get a tower with dual monitors with the same specs for the same price (is it just me that has enough computers, but always has this "need" for more?)

  • yea lenovo have already corrected that error~

    • Do you reckon they'll honor the deal for those who bought it at previous price?

  • still works fine right to check out (6.45 wa time)
