farrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr out I just brought my yesterday with MSY!!! :(

  • +2

FYI, 6 weeks after the end of the previous promotion (30 SEP) and still waiting for the BONUS T4U, but won't neg the deal. TP-Link ANZ Sales do not respond to emails, so will be referring to CBS/OCBA/ACCC.

    • Couple of people reported getting it in the last deal. Perhaps they have to restock? Still, no communication from TP Link is poor.

    • Ive got mine a few weeks after submitting the form online, pretty happy with the modem/router, fairly stable and good speed.

    • I got mine from a promotion in Jan, but it took a month or two to arrive. TP-Link did answer emails promptly.

      • +1

I also received mine within the month and the "free gift" was a TP LINK pen. The Archer D7 is a excellent modem router, the only con was that sometimes I could not access the router's webpage when on the same subnet (but other subnets could access them….) Not sure why.

Other thing to note is that there is 3 LAN ports + 1 Lan/Wan port.

    • I purchased during last promotion and due to circumstances outside of my control only received the item last week. It was not the retailers fault or TP-Link, they have honored my claim for the dongle and responded promptly with all correspondence. Great modem router too.

Ignore Wireless1's rrp of $229 though, its been around the $145 mark for some time now.

  • +1

Nice one. I was on my way to buy one of these this afternoon and couldn't be arsed due to late finish and the weather. I thank my laziness.

    • I've been hanging out hoping for a click frenzy deal. Wireless 1 has other deals which may be of interest also. http://www.wireless1.com.au/click-frenzy/

    • +2

Nearly purchased the D-Link DSL-2890AL from MSY for $169 today. Instead I was running late to go home and said I'll get it tomorrow.

My laziness has brought me here where I pulled the trigger and saved $30.

      Thanks OP.

  • does this work good for tpg and xbox one wireless ?

    • +2

basing it on an ISP is too broad, it depends on the line/connection itself, every connection experiences things differently. and depends what modem/router you're using right now, just compare the specs.

  • +1

After a long read on whirlpool/reviews, this is a decent buy at this price. hasn't ever been cheaper. this is true quality by the sounds of it.

  • im using netcomm nb304n. i need to upgrade cause internet keeps dropping out on the xbox and laptop.

    • this will most likely fix it. if not, it's your connection. so then you just call up your ISP. there's too many aspects to it, but put simply trying a new modem (or borrowing one) is the fastest way to find out where the problem is. then there's the other thing with inteferrence/distance, just Google if it reaches that point.

  • Ummm I don't actually NEED to upgrade my modem router - but I want to…
    Someone convince me

    • Is there an issue with yours in terms of speed/reach? Or is your current modem router dropping out or have any other issues?
If you need one I think the D7 is the best value for money at the moment, but if you're happy with whatever you have you're just wasting $139!

      • Happened to my Netgear DNDG3700, WIFI is fine but LAN keeps dropping out.

        :(

    • download a torrent and watch a video at the same time, if you can't do both. you don't deserve that kind of trouble, the D7 will look after you.

      • How is this a good test? If the bandwith from your ISP is say 10mbps and you're torrenting at that rate there's no way you can stream a video at the same time even if you buy the best modem on earth.

        • +3

It's a good test because of the number of connections required to torrent. It's not really about bandwidth so much as a router's ability to manage heaps of connections to different addresses at once. Some routers, even with QoS, don't cope well with this kind of traffic (I think it's to do with needing to maintain large ARP tables for all the peers you're connected to?)

Your point about bandwidth stands, but it's only one part of the equation (and good routers use QoS to stop this being a problem).

        • @joahua: Poorly configured or not-at-all configured torrent clients that open too many simultaneous connections or have too many connected peers per torrent can bring even the best routers to their knees.

So unless you know you've set up your torrent client precisely in tune with your downstream sync speeds, which takes some trial and error (particularly if you've got a fairly diverse LAN/WLAN at home), then it's not a 100% objective test of router performance.

    • I'm in the same boat and my 7800NL is extremely serviceable still but I should have bought the Billion with Gigabit network so this is a networking upgrade for me.

  • +1

    Wish I could put dd-wrt on it…

    • Honestly, the bundled firmware isn't that bad. I wouldn't let that hold you back on this deal unless you have a certain use case that requires dd-wrt

  • +1

Thanks, my current router has been dropping out. This should be a fix

  • +1

    Ac1900 deal please!!!

  • Cool. I was looking to upgrade 4 year old router for tpg. It keeps dropping off.

Silly question: What is the wifi adapter? Where will it be used?

    • +1

Did you just get thawed out or something? :)
Give it to baby T-rexy as a rattler.

      • lol

      • +1

Im sure what you said is funny. But I genuinely did not get the joke. Others seem to have got it.

        • +1

I think he is saying that 4 years is basically ancient in terms of routers.
This ADSL2+ modem/wireless router is an excellent bit of kit, and in terms of speed and stability the difference between this and a 4 year old router is almso certainly worth it.

The wifi adapter is a small usb stick that looks like a flash drive. Its used for devices that either don't have built in Wifi, or if their built in wifi uses an older wireless standard. The Archer D7 uses the 802.11ac standard, which was only approved earlier this year and provides much faster speeds than the older standards such as 802.11a/b/g/n. 802.11ac is backwards compatible with your older devices, but if you want to take advantage of the higher bandwidth, plug the USB adapter into your device.

In saying that, I bought the D7 Archer a few months ago and I still haven't received the adapter despite receiving the confirmation email. The router alone is fantastic and well worth the price, but I wouldn't expect to receive the adapter any time soon

    • I believe it's just a USB stick which acts as a Wireless N card on your computer if you have an older device which dosen't have wireless N.

      • wireless ac, not n

  • Thanks OP, bought it!

  • +1

Is it worth to buy netgear r7000 instead of this?

    • looking at the R7000 myself I am curious what is more worth getting?

  • Is there any real different between the d7 and the d5 ac1200 in terms of Internet speed?

    • It depends very much on your personal usage. If you have multiple devices being used over WiFi simultaneously, yes the D7 1750 may be worth the purchase.

The difference between the two is the bandwidth

      D5 1200 - Simultaneous 2.4GHz 300Mbps and 5GHz 867Mbps.
      D7 1750 - Simultaneous 2.4GHz 450Mbps and 5GHz 1300Mbps.

Note that only compatible devices can use the 5GHz band. The router allows for two simultaneous SSID's to be broadcast, one in the 2.4GHz range and another in the 5GHz range.
Also note that there shouldn't be any real difference between the two if you are used a wired connection.

I believe this is a broadcom chipset as well…

    • Pretty sure it is atheros like the c7

  • Great deal, thanks OP. Have been waiting for a deal like this for quite a while

Edit: website says less than 5 left now, so those who want one better be quick. Pretty much the best bang for back AC modem/router you are going to find.

  • page dowwwnnn…

  • looks like website has been ozbargained!

  • Bought one maybe an hour ago. Just checked now and it still says under 5 left!

    • There was under 5 left when I bought last night at midnight.

  • Is this nbn ready?

    • +6

"NBN ready" is a scam really.

As long as your modem supports PPPoE, it will work.
Modems as old as 10 years supports PPPoE

  • Cheers, been looking for a new modem/router. Just bought.

  • I'm currently using Billion 7800VDPX, wondering if it's worth for me to upgrade to this model.

    • +2

Unless you have a very specific need for 802.11ac, like very high-bitrate video streaming to multiple devices (15,000Kbps .mkv files with DTS-HD audio), or continuous transfers of very files across a WLAN that are currently taking too much time, then replacing your 7800VDPX which is barely 2 years old is a waste of money.

I doubt your actual line speeds come close to saturating the 802.11g standard (54Mbp/s), let alone AC.

Both this TP-Link and your Billion use a Broadcom chipset, so sync speed-wise, I doubt you would see any difference in performance between the two.

I've had my 7800VDOX (same as yours but with VPN support) for nearly 2 years as well and I can't fault it for anything. I doubt the TP-Link's firmware is as customisable as a Billion's, which are pretty renowned for having almost too many configuration options.

      • Thanks a lot! So far I'm very happy with my billion and I don't think I'll actually need AC speed in the near future.

  • Ordered one, hopefully stops my shitty lag.

  • cool. just order one.

  • +1

If your looking for a cheaper alternative MSY has a cheap router
    http://www.msy.com.au/viconline/peripherals/14626-netgear-d1…

With a free USB wireless dongle too http://www.msy.com.au/viconline/network-device/13637-netgear…

    • Isn't that Netgear modem just a wireless-N one, not wireless-AC. If so, are the TP-Link 8960N or ASUS DSL-N12E better options?

      • The 2 you posted are both wireless N. Yours are both Modem/Routers… The Netgear is only a router

        • Yes, I know both 8960N and DSL-N12E are wireless-N modems, and your MSY link to D1500 says it is a modem router, not just a router.

        • @edfoo: oops brain no worky today
probably comes down to brand preference. I have both tp link and netgear working together no worries.

  • Ordered one to replace my shitty netgear D6300.

  • I installed one of these for my sister. Works well. The via redemption USB adapter does the job on her office PC which is nowhere near the router. Recommended for the price.

  • Excellent! Great time to upgrade from my 7 year old modem / router (Netgear DG834N). Must be 7 year itch … it is time for a new one ~

Hurry, it says less than 5 in stock now.

    • +3

Yeah, when I ordered before 8am this morning it said that too. Some earlier comments suggest it was saying this at midnight last night too. I'll admit, it hurried up my order. I'll have some faith in humanity and assume it's a bug opposed to a misleading marketing ploy =) So long as I get the router though, it's a great price!

  • Waiting for D9/C9 Archer but this is a good price for a regarded unit.

  • Picked one up too. Gives me something else to wait for and get excited about while Tesltra provision my line. Really hope this doesn't get put on backorder..

  • +4

Just gave them a ring regarding the less than five left thing. They said they do only have a few left but they are on order and due in to arrive tomorrow morning, at which point they are apparently getting heaps so they will be able to ship them all out. Enjoy!

  • how is the range on this thing?

    • -1

Very good if your devices are 5GHz compatible. 2.4GHz band is pretty good, but the 5GHz knocks it out of the water

      • 5GHz has a SHORTER range than 2.4GHz due to the higher frequency. That said, 2.4GHz is more susceptible to interference.
5GHz would have more throughput tho… again because of the higher frequency.

  • How does this compare to D-Link 2890al?

    • This has no USB 3.0 port

      ;-)

  • Ordered, thanks OP.

  • Awesome price. Purchased. Thanks

Further to this, in case anyone having issues with 2.4Gb range/speed, as per Gigman's and pete y testing's post in THIS Whirlpool thread, check these out -> Ebay

If you purchase different, you will need 3 in total, and make sure they are dual band antennas.

  • Hmmm been thinking about getting a new router. Haven't ever spent much money on them but really need a better wifi connection.
Should I got a bit more expensive and get Nighthawk?
    Cos I mean… Nighthawk!

    • Hmm no idea, have a look on whirpool.

    • +1

If you're considering nighthawk, wait for the the new Archer C9.

      • Should have clarified - modem/router.
Is Archer C9 modem & wireless router?
And how is it better than the nighthawk.
I can't find much info on the C9 at the moment.

        • The D9 is the modem/router equivalent of the c9.

  • What are some of the features of this router that makes it better? Is there any interesting extra features you can do through this?

    Thanks

  • For whoever whose ordered, did anyone get a confirmation email from them? I've gotten an email from paypal with a scheduled payment, but nothing from wireless1?

    • +1

i got a confirmation email within minutes

    • No confirmation e-mail other than PayPal's. My order is still 'processing'. I rung them however, and they said they are getting a LOT of stock of these scheduled for tomorrow morning and that they will ship them after that. I guess they won't confirm it until they've got stock or something, perhaps?

    • Have you checked your spam folder? That's where my confirmation email from Wireless 1 was.

    • Same here. I have an order number, no email. Not concerned but I'll be more than a little annoyed if I miss out given my order would have been one of the first lodged.

  • When i try and order it give the error "Your order cannot be completed at this time as there is no shipping methods available for it." So, no Auspost??

    • Just tested and it's working for me.

  • Currently have a Billion 7700n R2, is it worth the upgrade?

  • +2

Gave them a call this afternoon to find out what the deal was with postage, as their site states will be posted by 11am if ordered before then ( I ordered 6am).

Fella tells me they have been swamped with orders, and no, I cant pickup I have to wait for a phone call to confirm it is in stock.

Also reassures me that they have "a couple of hundred" coming tomorrow so everyones order will be fine.

He sounded a little stressed, as if I was the 1000th caller today, sounds like they got their pants pulled down, ozbargain style!

  • I have a Netgear DGND3700 in service & going well. But, I'm kind of an "ought to have a spare" person. My son's friend laughed when our microwave packed up & I pulled out a brand-new one, from Salvo's, for $8.00! Lol…

I hear only good on this modem/router & the wifi adapter is a sweet add-on. I'm a long-time rebater/cashback (from USA) so know how to get the promised goods.

Thanks to the OP- best price around & then some!

    Cheers

  • My order status is still "processing" despite ordering Tuesday night when more than 10 in stock and claims that orders received before 11 are shipped that day. i.e. it should have been shipped today.

    Ordinary experience so far.

    • I nearly ordered this from CentreCom several times at $149, but held off after hearing all the negative comments. I sincerely hope these guys don't follow in CentreCON's tracks.

  • Not a bad router-replaced a troublesome Edimax from Jaycar which in turn replaced a Netgear.

TP-Link's routers have been very realiable in our house.

  • Looks as though may have expired? Back up to $164.

    • and the same "Less Than 5 Left" LOL

    • Farr out, i miss out :(. Is there anybody change their mind after buying this. I am willing to take it off you :D

  • still no progress on the status nor any email from wireless1

    • +1

Who negged this comment? Comment is perfectly valid, I'm in the same situation. My order should have been dispatched yesterday, still no order update from the store.

      EDIT: From their FAQ;

"When will my order be shipped?

Once your payment has been received by us, we will endeavour to have your item despatched within 1-2 working days. Should there be any delays, we will notify you immediately. "

      Err, not quite.

      • +2

They were inundated with orders as per Rehab's comment above your original post. Too busy to email people presumably after being OzB'ed and ClickFrenzied.

My situation was similar so I rang them just now. It's on the way - posted yesterday so by Australia Post's standards I'll get it Monday or Tuesday (Canberra's such a long way from Parramatta).

        • +1

Has your order status changed from "Processing"? Did you get a tracking number? I see you ordered a few hours before me on Tuesday evening. Hopefully mine is also on its way.

EDIT: just had a look, mine is now "Complete", with a tracking number.

        • +2

@pennypacker: Didn't check the order status, figured I'd let them get on with it after reading some comments here. Yes got a tracking number (AP "initiated"). I ordered Tues night just after 11.

I was going to order one from their ebay site last week and did a bit of googling wrt their reputation. They get a lot of positive comment so I think everyone should be okay despite the pounding they got.

Mindless negging is standard fare for some on OzB.
