Has been cheaper in the past. I would probably wait for a DSE 11% or 12% sale on Macs unless you are desperate to have it now.

Edit: The 2014 13" models all come with 8gb ram standard and the 15" models all come with 16gb ram standard so its not really a minor upgrade for the lower end 13" and 15" model.

    • The 2.3Ghz model in the title has 16GB. See the specs (also Wikipedia)

Edit: Valid point for the lower models, however.

  • What's with the CPU speeds? My 2012 15" MBP is 2.6GHz

But the 2013 has 2.3GHz max and 2014 is 2.5GHz max?

    • 2.3 and 2.5 are the base clock speeds. Apple deliberately made them lower than your 2012 model to increase battery life on the 15" by one hour to 8 hours now.

      • Fair enough, I'm wondering why they don't go to Pentium(TM) 100. They'd get a week battery out of it.

        …you know… or upgrade the battery :-)

        • no way! but can the Pentium 100 really drive the retina lcd?! according to wiki, that cpu had a TDP of 10.1W, you could stick in 2 X much faster Bay Trail cpus and still be under 10 watts!
and Apple usually put in the largest battery they can fit, one of the reasons why they cost more, and also why they never have an option to upgrade the battery unlike most other pc vendors

The 2012 model at idle underclocks to 800Mhz to save power.

Intel Core i7-3615QM. This CPU has a core frequency of 2.3 GHz and 6 MByte L3-Cache. All processors are quad core units with four cores and eight threads, manufactured using the 22nm process and utilizing 3-D transistors. Our test model is able to overclock one single core to 3.3 GHz, and all four cores to 3.1 GHz using Turbo Boost 2.0 technology. During Idle, the system is able to downclock to a low 800 MHz using SpeedStep. Similar to graphics units, the system is able to choose its own power state.

Intel CPUs have been doing it since SpeedStep was introduced over 10 years ago

  • Do Ozbargainers actually spend that much on a laptop?

I can understand if a business is paying for it, but to buy it out of your own pocket…

    • +1

I wouldn't spend this much on something that depreciates faster than basically any other asset I own. The Retina for $1136 isn't a bad deal at all, but personally, I wouldn't buy any of the more expensive ones.

macs dont really depreciate at anywhere near the rate of a normal PC.

This is a very weak argument and based on subjective personal view/experience (i.e. Macadamia fans). Study accounting before? If not ask the accountant.

My accountant says general asset life of a laptop/desktop is 3 years. I don't see why a Macadamia is an exception except for its exorbitant prices! But my view would be the opposite if I'm the owner/shareholder lol

@ing siapa: just go on ebay and gumtree to check second hand mac laptops and compare it with pc brands

        • +1

@bjonbjonbjon: Sold my 2011 15" MBP for $800 on ebay, I am really happy with how well their price hold up over time.

        • Why do Mac users always have their pitchforks comparing things to PCs.

Where did I even mention PC in my post? Nowhere, because I was never referring to PCs. I wouldn't buy a PC this expensive either. Computers, Mac or PC, both depreciate quickly, perhaps Mac less than PCs, so do phones, tablets and other "new" tech because of the rate at which it's improving.

I prefer to spend my money on things that last and cheapen out on things that depreciate like crazy. Like in all honesty, buy yourself a nice table or something, it'll last you for the next 20 years and beyond.

I'm a tech guy, I love tech, but why pay double for a 15" MacBook when the 13" one can do the same things? If you need a 15", you know who you are, but I literally know people who buy the 15" one and then use it for Facebook and Microsoft Word.

What a waste of money for what is, essentially, a status symbol for them.

        • @paulsterio: if you want to run MacOS on the cheap, get a cheap Intel machine and do a Hackintosh!

        • -1

          @paulsterio: I have the 15". I'm a dev.

It certainly beats having a linux OS or Windows on a PC based laptop IMHO.
I was always a PC guy… until I actually owned a Mac. I bought an iMac because I didn't need a laptop at the time, and it was the best all-in-one I could find… about 5 Macbooks Pros later, I wouldn't consider buying much else. (Still not an Apple fan)

        • @OzJD: Well I'm glad you enjoy what you're using and that you're using it for work purposes rather than the browse the net and go on Facebook.

I don't have anything against Mac users at all, we have our own preferences - Toyota or Mazda, Holden or Ford, Windows or OSX, Canon or Nikon, LG or Samsung…etc. Plenty of choices, great for all.

Yep. I bought one for the same reason I bought a high end car instead of a Toyohondhyunkia. It doesn't get me to my destination any quicker but in my opinion, it drives and feels nicer, for the Mac, I think the whole package offers better value than a plastic fantastic wintel laptop.

      • -4

What Macadamia laptop is made of? Scrap metal? lol

      • I think the whole package offers better value than a plastic fantastic wintel laptop.

This is where I think Apple fanboys get annoying. Sure, if you love Macs, then use them, but somehow Apple users always have to go and take a crap on someone else's lawn, whether it's Windows users, Android users or any other competing brand.

If you actually woke up and compared your Mac to other notebook which cost a similar amount, you'd see that it's not actually that great - it just about measures up to other notebooks, but nothing spectacular like you love making it seem.

Check out the Lenovo X1 Carbon, made out of Carbon Fibre - a superior material to aluminium and have your Macbook compete against some fair competition. Stop picking on $500 Windows notebooks to compete with.

  • You've gotta love the PC guy giving us negs just for saying we bought a Mac. Sad.

  • I love and hate Mac at the same time. Does anyone know if this deal applies to higher specced MBP Pro 15?
