      • cool, will buy when I go to Japan next month!

      • Not surprised , both Sanyo and Panasonic has its own plant in Japan producing exclusively to domestic market. loads of electronics you will never be seeing in any overseas market except ebay

  • Just FYI, I got some chocolat eneloops a few weeks back and had need of them for the first time yesterday. Pulled two out of the packet assuming they'd be ready to go but they lasted all of 30sec before my Xbox 360 controller died. These are supposed to come pre charged aren't they?

First experience with eneloops wasn't a good one. Is it dodgy Panasonic to blame, or just bad luck?

    • Out of interest - what was the date on the pack Iceman? Bought some Choc AA and AAAs recently and they are Aug/Sept 2014 so I'd expect them to be 90% capacity minimum. If it turns out that the Chinese Eneloops aren't consistently holding their charge and are dying prematurely (compared to Panasonic's claims of 2100 recharges) then they'll go from champ to chump very quickly as word spreads.

      • Mine are 08 - 2014 too

So only a few months old and they were already dead enough that I couldn't get a few minutes worth of use out of them. Not really what I signed up for. Energizer alkaline AAs did the trick and the eneloops are sitting on the chest of drawers in my room, doing nothing. I'll have to test them out in my nifty charger when I've got the time. (which I don't)

Pretty sure you should charge all batteries overnight before use and that most manufacturers warn you about this.

Nope, Eneloops (and all LSD cells) are advertised as pre-charged and ready to use. Just click on the Eneloop link above and look at the description. Then have a look at the photo and read the text below the big eneloop logo.

        • I googled 'should I charge new eneloop low self dishcarge batteries' and I stand by what I wrote. Also referring to Li-on etc batteries.

        • @abacus:
We are talking specifically about Eneloops. You say most manufacturers warn you about that.

          Panasonic/Sanyo do not.

They specifically market that battery as "ready to use". No charging beforehand is needed.

        • Just got two packets of these "made in Japan" eneloops, but mine were probably the exception as they were made in China.

I put them in two LaCrosse chargers and the batteries charged for between 400mah and 700mah before showing as FULL, which may prove they are not fully charged when they arrive.

Not saying I am right, but giving bad advice is the worst thing you can do for someone.

        • @abacus:
I think they come 75% charged (therefore would take some charge on), don't quote me but I think that is what I remember reading on the packet.

          EDIT:
Just use a smart charger that detects delta dip and swings over to top-up mode and you can leave it on all week if you like. Crisis over, problem solved. You can edumacate yourself further regarding charging NiMh with the link below.

You are missing the point once again.

You said all batteries need to be charged before use, and most manufacturers warn you to do so.

I said that is incorrect, and provided evidence showing that Panasonic/Sanyo specifically say that you do not have to charge before use.

There's nothing to argue about. It's clear fact.

Whether or not these new eneloops retain their charge for long periods of time is a different matter.

Are they worth it if they're not the super fancy ones?

  • Just got my new Tropical eneloops…. Panasonic and made in China! Deceptive conduct much Dick Smith?!?

    • +1

Most definitely. Dick Smith is well aware by now of their incorrect advertisement and they have done nothing to fix this. They keep advertising it as made in Japan, and keep sending out chinese made. Most likely hoping customers are just going to take it. Just keep pushing on them to get yours exchanged. They may initially try to put you off and hope that you don't bother, but just keep at it. I initially got told there is no difference irrespective of where it's made, but I kept on pushing and flat out said I was deliberately mislead, and then they did a 180 and said I had merely been sent the wrong product, and they would exchange it. Already had a courier come by to pick up, though they said it may be a while for the replacement due to no stock. I half expect to get a refund in the end. Just make sure you write it all down and send a record of it to the ACCC to add to their database. I will. Only way Dick Smith will learn.

  • Just received my "I wish it was a Sanyo branded" Tropical eneloop pack. Not a happy boy this Friday…..

Anyone local to Chadstone VIC, I got my Panasonic ones exchanged for the Sanyo ones there this morning.

According to their system yesterday, they had five older Sanyo ones in stock. Guess it's now four since I swapped mine. I'd call them before going though just to make sure!

    • Thanks AnDyStYLe. I got exchanged my two Panasonic ones for the Sanyo at the store. I saw two more left on the shelf (Taigum, Brisbane).

  • I see Warren Buffet's just bought Duracell. Maybe he's got wind of Panasonic's upcoming Chinese eneloop "disaster"?
