I got the 1101HA Asus eepc a few weeks ago for ~$580AU. Please remeber that before buying from here!

    • +1

Looks like the 1101HA can be had for $499:
      http://staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=1101HA+&spos=3

      • Shop you mention is selling the S101H for $1000+

        • Yep saw that but i was specifically replying to sj2can's post

    • The 1101HA appears to have a slower 1.33Ghz processor

      • You can't make a direct comparison of CPU speed any more. The Z520 is a faster CPU with hyper threading and bigger cache.

        • Actually all netbooks with the Z520 CPU is known to suck big time. The 1101HA is significantly slower (enough to bug you) than say the 100HA/1005HA?HE simply because of the use of this CPU.

  • That means I better hold off and buy it during December when I am travelling overseas. Thanks sj2can.

    • +2

definitely mate! if you arent leaving for overseas in the next 30 days (ie therefore able to claim GST back) then it is worthwhile holding on to see what's on sale/new models closer to when you are leaving, provided you dont need the netbook right now.

imho, the s101 is not a bad buy at all, i have used this before and am seriously considering buying one at this price. The only thing that shat me about it was that the right shift key is half the normal size and next to the up arrow so I kept accidently hitting that - was used to it in about a week though.

    • +1 to the above.

Perhaps even look at going to duty free and getting them to price match deals (if possible), then get the gst back

      • +1

If you buy it duty free then there will be no GST to claim back.

I have never seen anything sheaper in a duty free store.
They just seem to sell things at retail prices and advertise duty free.

Which it is, there is no tax on the goods, the store just gets to make extra money.

        • Except alcohol and cigarette (and may be cosmetic), you can practically get anything else cheaper at a retail stores. And that before you claim TRS.

          • @timhn: I dont think alcohol is usually any cheaper.

Spirits are usually $30/bottle from duty free stores or you can wait for dan murphys to sell then at 2 for $60

Duty free is basically a con.

            • @anthony: yeah, but usually the duty free sizes are 1 Litre, versus 700 mls in stores. Some examples:
Pimms ($29 for 1L at duty free; $33 for 700 mls normally)
Campari ($34 at duty free for 1L; $35 for 700 mls normally)
You can check the best non-duty-free store prices at http://www.boozle.com.au/ , and the duty free stores normally have a web site (e.g. http://www.syddutyfree.com/ ). Also international arrivals at Sydney will sometimes hand out a $5 off coupon for any purchases above $25, which makes it better value. Without that offer though, it's basically: is the hassle of buying and carrying booze home, together with my other baggage, worth saving a few dollars? And it's pretty even in my book, so the $5 off is usually needed to make the duty free worth it.

        • Duty free is NEVER cheaper in my experience. Even when overseas.

          • @samfisher5986: I don't know about that. $8 for a carton of ciggies in Malaysia is pretty darn cheap. Lucky I dont smoke so I'm not missing out :)

  • why they don't mention the battery type and life? hm…

    • here is a model comparison chart from asus's au website:

      http://event.asus.com/eeepc/comparison/eeepc_comparison.htm

however use the chart as a guidline only. the tricky thing is due to the variations within models etc its hard to tell what cotd's offering are when they dont mention specifics eg on the asus chart the 1002HA has a N270 processor, but the COTD one has a N280 processor.

      • 1002H = N280
        1002HA = N270

  • +2

How many model variations does Asus need?! Talk about making it tricky for consumers to work out choice/value.

for all the lazy folks here are the staticice prices for comparision:

    Asus S101H Brown Premium EEE PC (S101H-BRN016X) - $915
    Asus S101H Pink Premium EEE PC (S101H-PIK024X) - $889
Asus 1002HA Black Atom N280 Netbook (1002HA-BLK063X) - Not found
Asus 1002HA Blue Atom N280 Netbook (1002HA-BLU013X) - Not found
Asus 1002HA Red Atom N280 Netbook - SOLD OUT at COTD
    Asus 1002H Black Atom N280 Netbook (1002H-BBLK004X) - $714
    Asus 1002H Pink Atom N280 Netbook (1002H-PIN004X) - $714
    Asus 1002H White Atom N280 Netbook (1002H-WHI004X) - $698

COTD prices are $499 for all but the first one which is $539, so pretty good deals really. If you need a netbook or are tossing up whether to get one then jump in, especially if traveling o/s in the next 30 days as you can claim $40ish GST back.

Yeah they might be cheaper in a few months but that's technology for you, my tv from earlier this year sells for $500 less now, and at that time I got it for $500 off retail.

    • If you only search Asus S101H and not S101H-BRN016X on staticice you get the cheapest price about $578.. with free 2Gb RAM upgrade..

  • I suspect some of these are actually slightly older revs as the batter life is lower than current spec. COTD aren't renowned for accuracy of details.

I also found an unbelievable price on the new 11" model although they don't have stock http://www.ksonline.com.au/index.php?page=shop.product_detai…

    • nice work garglebutt , thats an awesome price. i bought my s10 from there 6months ago for 499

  • All the model is discontinue, but still good price

  • The first is brown and $539 the second is pink and $489 … but the exact same models except for colour?

I don't understand why people by these ultra small, under powered netbooks these days. I know Windows 7 runs on them okay, but for a little more you get a decent full laptop. But I'm sure if size is an issue, but who doesn't use a laptop as a desktop these days anyways.

    • I think you are seriously underestimating the number of people who require <10" netbooks. Dare I say they are popular then desktop replacement laptops these days.

    • +3

I'm guessing that having twice the battery life, half the weight and a third of the size of a typical cheap laptop, while being fast enough for most on-the-go computing tasks, may have something to do with the netbook's appeal.

    • +1

I wouldn't use a laptop as a desktop…I mean following your previous logic why would you buy a laptop if you can get a more powerful desktop for the same price.

The markets there from both a price and size angle. Also they are only underpowered if you need more power than they provide. Now personally I'd prefer a 13" laptop so I wouldn't go a netbook….but there is a huge market for them…especially as a secondary computer.

edit: Also probably worth noting that a lot of the better 12 - 13 inch laptops are quite expensive generally. Not always, but for the extra money you get more power but usually not portability. I'd say a lot of those sub $1000 laptops are 14 - 15" units.

    • I don’t understand why people by these ultra small

      Because they are "ultra small"
      Have a long battery life
      Are very light
All that is needed to surf the web, write word documents and use IM

      under powered netbooks

They were originally designed to run Linux which meant they were powerful enough however people have since wanted windows to be installed on them causing them to run slower than they were intended.

Netbooks are really slowly dying and being replaced by smaller laptops (ie, a larger more powerful laptop shrunk down to netbook size)

    • With my 1000HE, I can watch shows on the way to and from uni, use it to type up lecture notes, surf the net during breaks and still come home with 2 hours of battery life left.

    QQQ any free shipping code?

    • hehe yeah i second that… in fact any chance you can give us ozbargainers a code to bring the s101 brown to the same price as the pink… i'd buy one asap!

      • not gonna happen … as it is sold out now …

  • Excellent am getting one.

Which is preferable the 1002HA or 1002H??
    Too many models argh.

    • +2

Only real difference is HA is aluminium body while H is plastic.

  • Yeah… grabbed a 1002HA.
Looks great alu body etc. Will be interested to see exactly which CPU it has - have seen them described with teh Atom N270 and others state the N280, but no biggie.
Can't wait to open it up.
7 days shipping…hurry up hurry up.
King Tightarse is pleased with this deal.

    • i got dibs on the pink one.
i too vouch on this deal. +1

tell us when you get yours and if you guys have any problems.

  • Picked up the 1002H preferred the quicker processor and chicklet keyboard
