Nexus 5 - $409 + Shipping (Typically $23) @ Kogan

40

Kogan is probably clearing out the Nexus 5 in light of the new Nexus 6. 409$ is for a "bundle", including other products, but even just for the phone I believe this is a good price. I already have one, bought one for a family member.

EDIT: Checked two days ago and Google Play had it out of stock. It's now indeed back in stock. Under the circumstances, if you don't need the extras, like Jorkus has stated, GP is a good option as well.

EDIT 2: SOLD OUT

  • Tempted. I need to either get a Nexus 6 myself and give my Nexus 5 to my partner or buy a 2nd Nexus 5 for her. I'm not sure what to do!

Anyone else considering the Nexus 6 who is a Nexus 5 owner? I used to say a screen that size is too big but my phone is used so often as a media/internet device that it may be worth it.

    • I flashed Android 5.0 on my Nexus 5 and it runs brilliantly. If I got it today (not knowing the hardware is a year old) I wouldn't be disappointed.

As for 5 vs 6, it all comes down to personal preference for the screensize.

    • I'm a Galaxy Nexus user and looking at the Nexus 6 intently… Having played with the Note4 and Xperia Ultra I'm still not convinced about the size. I do use the phone for media and internet and the big screen is nice.

The newer phones are faster and I'm stuck on jelly bean but unlike my previous phone this does not feel dated or unusable slow after all this time.

I wouldn't buy from Kogan given Google's warranty and the fact that my current Nexus was delivered via kogan loaded with developer software and had to go back… It took a few weeks for them to reflash it. Not happy with the experience.

Not really that great. The Nexus 5 16GB is $399 on Google play, so unless you want all the other crap, just buy direct from Google. Also, Google warranty instead of Kogan blah blah blah.

    • I've been waiting for a sale on the N5 for a month or so now. I figured there'd be a few about given the N6 announcement but there's actually been very little. I bought the 32GB version from the Play Store on Friday, so it cost me probably an extra $100 (over this sale) including postage but in hindsight - I'm almost happy to pay it to have a non-imported model and official warranty.

      • The 32GB version is only $50 more… how did yours come out to $500+ (unless i'm reading that wrong)?

Remember to take FX charge (3 - 3.5%) into consideration when purchasing from Google…

    • Australian Google Play store charges in AUD

      • -1

Yes, but the origin of the transaction is not Australian-based.
Some banks still charge for this.

cgunique gets down-voted because real ozbargainers use 28 degrees CC.

  • I'm kinda looking forward to some Nexus 7 2013 deals. The Nexus 9 is too much for what I want another tablet for (Hearthstone)

    • +5

That's great, I am looking at getting a deal on a 2013 Toyota Hilux soon.

  • Anyone expecting a Nexus 5 price drop before Christmas due to the new model or do we think since the price was already low and the 6 isn't an out and out replacement it will stay the same?

    • +1

I thought it would have come by now, but maybe there's still demand since the Nexus Shamu isn't a direct competitor (I wouldnt buy one just cos it's too big for my tastes). They might just be able to liquidate stocks at RRP.

Decent deal if you actually want all the bonuses. Otherwise, just go with Google.

Yes, you're getting some bonus crap, but after shipping it's $13 more from Kogan, you're getting it up to 2 weeks slower, and you trade Google's terrific warranty (they ship out a new one instantly & you organise a pickup date for the old) for Kogan's 4 week Hong Kong holiday warranty.

    • *refurbished ones are sent as replacement

Other than that, you're completely correct.

      • My replacement one from Google was new, if it was "refurbished" which I guess is plausible I can confirm it was in the same condition to the first one (brand new) that I purchased from Google, screen was perfect, back was perfect etc etc, battery perfect.

What they do is actually give you a link to the play store (specialised link for your ref no) you purchase the phone on a "bond" type setup the charge a hold on your credit card for the phone amount, I guess its a guarantee for them so you have to send the old/broken phone back.

Perhaps for some unlucky people they get a refurbished one, but in my experience its a proper new replacement.

Have you had a different experience?

        • Mine was definitely refurbished.

        • Hmm when I enquired which was two weeks back, I was offered a refurbished one.
I bought my Nexus 5 on launch and I'm guessing that maybe because I've had it for nearly 12 months they wouldn't want to provide a new one.

Warranty only covers 12 months right? Maybe it's not worth giving a new replacement for one that's been used for this long…

        • +1

@BanSlavery: Mine was a refurbished replacement after a little over 18 months.

        • Mine was new too.

        • Got a new one when claiming warranty.

My experience was very similar to that of PonyTable. Directed by Google Support to order a new one as a replacement, and also to arrange for broken one to be picked up by courier.

          Positive experience overall.

        • @BanSlavery: bought mine on launch as well, power button failed 4 weeks ago, so I guess they say refurbished but you may get a new one, however I don't remember refurbished being mentioned in the RMA process, @gilbarc I assume yours is a nexus 4 as the nexus 5 aren't even 12 months old yet?

        • +1

@PonyTable: mine was a Nexus 4 yes, have since upgraded to Nexus 5.

        • My nexus 4 replacement was new as well. It was replaced for free because the home button was not as responsive. Guess it's just luck? Did your replacement have scratches on it or something, banslavery?

Mine was a week from 12 months.

While this one doesn't come with accessories, you can grab the Nexus 5 for $353.15 at Topbuy
    http://www.topbuy.com.au/lg-google-nexus-5-white-16g-d821-un…
    (Add about $22 for postage).

  • I gave up on waiting for a Nexus 5 flash sale and got myself a second hand LG G2. I still really, really, really, really want a Nexus 5. I'll definitely get one if the 32GB ones if they ever drop under $300. I love the hardware on the G2, but a good deal on a Nexus 5 will make it drop it like it's hot.

  • It should be Nexus 5 $399 + Kogan's accessories $40 + Kogan's negative reputation -$150 = $289
But still, some peoples like me don't want to risk $289 on a second hand phone.

Problem with those Nexus 6 Androids is they only have a four year lifespan and have a tendancy to go rogue.

    • Nice :)

  • This is expensive. Bought for $330-$340 in those ebay sales.

  • Any news on which local stores will be stocking Nexus 9 LTE model?

  • Google Play Store charges $399.00 AUD (+$20 delivery) , which comes with a very generous RMA and refund process.
Personally I would buy it from Google Play, given that I haven't had experience with Kogan warranty claims.

It is currently in stock too
