Thanks..

    • Yeah, although I've never understood the hype of Citizen Kane. I understand its importance at the time, but man I was bored.

    Inside Man (2006)

    Why no SciFi?

    • Why no SciFi?

Agreed. To exclude the entirety of perhaps one of the most intrinsically diverse movie genres is pretty much cutting off one's nose to spite the face…

OP, perhaps one of the most thought provoking movies I've seen in recent years is The Man From Earth (2007), even though it overlaps slightly with the SciFi genre, it is very much a cerebral, character driven story that is superlatively acted, directed & written, which will stay with you long after the credits roll. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0756683/

      • +5

Hehe, reminds me of an argument I had in a pub years back with this girl who thought that the 'Lord of The Rings' movies were amazing because they were full of cool heros/villians; great swordplay and action sequences; and magic and strange creatures, but wouldn't even consider watching Star Wars because she "wasn't interested in any of that sci-fi rubbish".

        Still makes me smile :)

        • +1

So many of the most successful movies are sci-fi but as soon as they become popular they get labelled as Action/Adventure. Avatar being the biggest ,but also most superhero movies, I'd even label most James Bond movies as Sci-Fi. And the other side of that coin Fantasy gets similar treatment despite the massive success of the genre.

I had that same argument in a pub with someone once, made me sad though as they were a filmmaker and refused to see Star Wars or any other Sci-Fi on principal. If you haven't seen it how do you know it is no good?

        • +1

          @tonka:

I'd even label most James Bond movies as Sci-Fi.

Agreed. If any movie contains even a single mechanical item which does not yet exist then I call it sci-fi. Done!

That labels around 80-90% of all movies sci-fi and then people who won't even give it a chance are screwed for choice.

        • +1

@mad__llama: Not just mechanical item. Don't forget biological like engineered viruses or cures. Software, anything man made that does not yet exist.

        • +1

@tonka: Correcting myself……it doesn't need to be man made. Just something that could happen in the future that hasn't yet.
Personally as much as I loved it I consider Star Wars very much Fantasy not Sci-fi. It occurred in the past, It is nothing to do with Earth's humanity and at least in the first movies the concepts/science is never attempted to be explained.

        • @tonka:

          on principal.

lol Not seeing a certain genre of movie isn't even a principle, let alone a principal.

        • @McFly: Not sure if you were just commenting to point out the spelling, but truly there are people who do consider avoiding Sci-Fi a 'principle'. Like it is some sort of sell out to the craft and refusing to watch it as some sort of protest.

        • +1

@tonka: About as good as having a 'principle' of not eating food that end with 's'.

        • @tonka:

Personally as much as I loved it I consider Star Wars very much Fantasy not Sci-fi.

Completely agree, hence the story about the girl in the pub :)

Man From Earth is one of my all time favorites :), I highly recommend it.

  • +10

    Shawshank Redemption…..oldie but a goodie
    Forrest Gump
The Princess Bride…give this a go if you haven't seen it already

    • Have to agree with the first two, never seen the last one.

Watched Shawshank redemption for english year 11 or 12 (can't remember). The only movie I've ever enjoyed watching for an English class.

And of course Forrest Gump has to be in the list, Tom Hanks was really amazing in that.

    • Cast Away
      The Green Mile
      Captain Phillips

Most Tom Hanks movies are worth a watch.

    • a lot of Leo in yr list.

  • +3

    Porco Rosso … just because

    • Indeed, I concur ;-)

  • +1

"Earthlings" is a documentary that often changes people's lives. I highly recommend it.

  • -1

    Seven Psychopaths.
Colin Farrell, Woody Harrleson, Christopher Walken and Sam Rockwell. GREAT movie. Is a very funny, dark comedy which for some reason seemed to slip through the cracks. Most people I talk to haven't seen it but I can highly recommend it.

  • -4

  • -5

i can't believe how many recommendations in here are all standard fare. think outside the box people. please.

    • -2

"i need movie recommendations"… "have you seen the godfather?"… "slap"

      • +1

I think you would be surprised how many people haven't seen the godfather - most people (well people my age at least) only seem to like michael bay movies or superhero movies. Unless you're a movie buff, recommendations from IMDB toplists are probably the best way to give sound advice without looking like a pretentious twat touting ancient movies set in a foreign language, only released straight in betamax.

    • speaking of box, unless you're easily offended, you really should see freddy got fingered…

    • Well lets see u name some instead of complaining, give us an example of what you mean..

    • Interesting observation Dids considering your lack of input. Nevertheless the OP put few boundaries on his request and apparently has since sat back and enjoyed the show. I'll bet he's disappointed at the lack of a true bunfight.

  • few comedies : Longest yard, seven psychopaths,21 jump st

    • SLAP

    • Seven Psychopaths is a great movie and really fresh.

21 Jump Street is a pathetic PG13 standard fare. Boobies and weed jokes from a regular odd couple, so stagnant.

  • DID SOMEONE RECOMMEND TITANIC>!OUUHVJKBfdj wsaveq

    • -1

Lmfao this is your out side of the box thinking? You sound like you know absouloutly nothing about movies, Hahaha titanic lmao everyone and their dog have watched titanic, try again didsburydan

    • I have seen it over 60 times…. In cinemas 5 times, once in IMAX 3D, On Blu-ray, Cassette and DVD. I not only recommend it I can almost quote it. I have heard of people watching it nearly every week, but that's crazy.

Did you know that there is only four mistakes in the entire movie? One is the sky at the end, the time difference of the viewing and the iceberg (barely), how it sank exactly (Which Jim Cameron did a documentary on years later) and…. I can't even remember the fourth.

The Shawshank Redemption, Dirty Dancing, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Top Gun, Terminator 2, The Lion King, Aladdin. Aladdin and the King of Thieves, Cinderella, Cinderella 3: A Twist in Time, Avatar (Wait till Avatar 2 comes out, watch in movies) and Wonder Woman (Animated) 2011. Superman VS The Elite. Gravity, Inception. The Wizard (LOL).

      • i know its a good movie, but my point was that i dont know anyone who has not already watched it.

        • I've never seen it. What happens?

        • @altomic: Red hangs himself.

Here's what I do when I want to see something different.

I pick a movie I already enjoy, for instance, "Memento" which, by the way is very well worth watching, and so many movies have copied it since.

So I look it up on IMDB (link on the title above), and find out it's directed by Christopher Nolan. All of a sudden I have a list of movies, directed by someone of whom i've already enjoyed one of their works, and now have a whole list of other films of potentially the same quality and all different!

I find searching by directors is a much more fulfilling experience than by actors. I tend to see actors as just pawns, there are some very good ones and some rather awful ones, but they're paid to adapt themselves to a new role. Quality directors are worth so much more!

Inversely, you can use this method to filter out movies you do not care for. Personally, i'm not a big fan of movies such as "Armageddon" which for me a a bit childish. So we look that up and it was directed by Michael Bay. Now I have a great list of movies I shall never even have to consider seeing unless I'm forcefully made to!

Yes, it doesn't work all the time (a good citing is Aliens, Terminator 2 which are both directed by James Cameron and of which I thoroughly enjoy but loathe Titanic oh so very much!) but i've found it overall to be pretty good measuring stick.

TL;DR1)Find a movie you already enjoy 2) look up what else the director has done 3) Thank me with cookies

    • +3

Yeah. Took me many years to realise this idea. after the movie Heat I found out about Michael Mann.

Anyway if you haven't seen Heat it's a great film anyway and most of the stuff by Michael Mann

      http://m.imdb.com/name/nm0000520/

      • Oh yeah.. Heat is up at my #1 film.

Interestingly enough, that was the second he made that film. Originally it was an 80's direct to TV movie called "LA Takedown" worth watching if you're a fan of 'Heat'. Although the original is a bit, well crap, the similarities and refinements that went into the second time he made the film really show. And it also shows the quality of the actors vs the script… I could almost do a case study on that film but I love it so much!

        • +2

This method works for me, too. Some of my favourites are Stanley Kubrick, John Carpenter, James Cameron, Martin Scorsese, John McTiernan, Luc Besson, Ridley Scott, Terry Gilliam, Alfred Hitchcock, William Friedkin and The Farrelly Brothers.

        • +1

          @tommy-darko: You forgot Uwe Boll…

Dons flame suit, throws smoke bomb, ducks & runs like Usain Bolt!

    • Come now. You can enjoy all James Cameron movies :)

  • AVENGERS

"Turn brain off, watch Hulk smash stuff"

    • Your comment was almost as entertaining as the movie (no sarcasm).

      • I am glad you liked it. thanks for the upvote

  • +6

Hong Kong movie Infernal Affairs and its two sequels.

The American version The Departed was based off of this movie.

    • yep, watch the hong kong ones, especially one, much better than the American version

      • +1

Not "much better" but yes, better. Infernal Affairs I & II is up there with the Godfather I & II in my contender for second favourite film. (For OP, my favourite film is The Shawshank Redemption)

While we're speaking Asian cinema, The Raid is one of the best to come out of there in recent years, the sequel is quite fantastic too.

    • +1

Thanks, I'll check out Internal Affairs.

      • +1

Porco, remember, it's the Hong Kong one with an 'f', not the Richard Gere one with a 't' (not saying that it's a bad movie).

  • +1

    Great for Halloween:
    Saw movies
    Cabin in the woods
    Se7en
    Oldboy - korean version
    Memento
    Identity
    Mama
    Butterfly effect

    • +1

Is Identity that one at the motel? If so, awesome movie.

      • Yeah. Totally didn't see that one ending as it did.

      • Yep, that's the one. It's great

    • Butterfly effect - Which cut of the movie did you watch? Drastically different thoughts of the movie some people have depending on the answer.

      • Yeah. 2 quite different endings. Couldn't even tell you off hand which one was the original. But both were interesting.

      • I watched the one where he was in the womb and I think that was the best.
But I also liked having seen the 3 other endings, similar scene, just slightly different outcomes

  • -1

Ted, this movie is about a teddy bear who is lustful, swears incessantly and smokes weed, it seriously does not get any better than this.

  • +2

    A beautiful Mind.

if you havent already seen it.

  • +2

Watched "Let Me In" (2010 version) the other night, great movie.

    • +2

I'm not normally big on Hollywood remakes of recent foreign movies, but I must confess that I didn't mind that version.

Not to sound elitist, whilst I honestly did prefer the original 2008 Swedish Let The Right One In http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1139797 because I just felt that it seemed more stark, creepy & atmospheric (purely subjective opinion there); I was pleasantly surprised to find that the 2010 version is a perfectly serviceable movie! :)

      • +1

Also, in let the Right One In, when "she" says I'm not a girl, she means it. The nudity in the bathroom scene is the biggest change in the US version. Too ambiguous for American Audiences?

  • Meet the Millers is a great movie.

  • Rat Race

seriously… if you like seth green, once you get the giggles you can't stop. a very stupid but fun movie..

    • How about Zoolander?Thought you would be a big fan.

  • Now You See Me

Neg for transcendence, such a crap movie, so many obvious plot holes.

      • you do realise trancendence is a fiction movie, the idea of it is pretty cool though, nanotech in general is so astonishing , it will eventually become reality, the only question is when. not in this lifetime though lol

          Fixed.

        • +1

@dinna89: I don't know about you but I usually use my own judgement to rate a movie. yes transcendence had flaws and could have been done better but you cant deny the coolness of story behind it.

        • -1

          @striker5950:

An idea is not enough to make a good movie, and money will not make a half baked plot much better.

You are correct, making your own judgement is good, and in my case I was happy to see that the critics agreed that it was terrible.
