So why the hell did you up vote?

        • He's friendly?

  • Is this region free?

    • +3

Unlike DVD players, there has never been any such thing as a "region-free" Blu-Ray player.

There have been a select few Blu-Ray players which have had the ability to reset their Blu-Ray region an unlimited number of times (either via user-accessible settings or firmware tweaking), but as of 2014, they are extremely uncommon.

The Oppo brand players were regarded as some of the best but they are incredibly hard to find now. Toshiba and budget brands Laser and Soniq also made some (such as the Laser BLU-BD1000), but they are all long since out of production.

The Toshiba BDX3200KY was one of them more recent players I heard of that is easily region resettable (a matter of entering a code on the remote).

The Pioneer BDP-150 could be loaded with custom firmware that enabled multi-region playback and disabled Cinavia, provided you had a model with an early firmware revision.

Bluray have zones, DVD have regions.

        Yeah whatever.

          You reek of cranium leakages.

        • +2

@ozy: Thank you for your deeply insightful contributions. How else would we know the difference between zones and regions (hint: there is no difference).

Here have a positive vote, you seem desperate.

        • -1

@Amar89: blurays have zones, distinctly different to regions in DVD.
You can have a region free dvd player and a zone free bluray player, but both would need unlocking if the model was "unlockable"

Marchi's question was "is this region free?"

And the fact its a bluray player i pointed out "Bluray have zones, DVD have regions."
As to clarrify the question being asked of the bluray player.

Region free bluray players are common as most dont have region locks, and dont care what dvds are played on them from other regions.

Your long winded info on "regions" that were unlockable though a "reset" was misguided and hardly relates to zone unlocking on blurays to which you are referring too in your bluray model babble..
I assumed you're just misguided yourself, and was confirmed with the response "Yeah whatever"…
To that Amar89 I say, you have a hole in your head which is starving you of the capacity to either understand zones and regions, or to construct more elaborate expressions of though before typing Yeah whatever in reply to information which would answer the question asked with relevance.
A brain leak from the hole i would say if not a fool.
          Cheers for the +1

And Marchi your answer about regions is below, Here

@ozy: Christ, someone's been brooding over this butthurt for a good 3 days now before contemplating a snarky response to better their fragile ego.

blurays have zones, distinctly different to regions in DVD.

I'm sorry but you've had it.

The official Blu-Ray consortium's home page uses the term "regions" when referring to regional coding:

How does Blu-ray Disc region coding work?
Contrary to DVD, the Blu-ray Disc region coding system divides the world into only 3 regions, called regions A, B and C. The usage of region coding on a Blu-ray Disc movie title is a publisher's option. A Blu-ray Disc player will play any movie title that does not have region coding applied, plus all titles of its corresponding region.

As well as the renowned index site, Blu-Ray.com

          Regions

Although a large portion of all Blu-ray movies are region free (when this is written about two-thirds of all Blu-ray movies are region free) below is a map of the official regions.

          As does Ebay.

          And Amazon.

          And Wikipedia.

You do realise it's still semantics?

They're both forms of Regional Coding/DRM that restrict an end-user's playback depending upon regional location.

Marchi's question was "is this region free?"

Yes, directed at a deal featuring a Blu-Ray player. Not a DVD player.

The Blu-Ray Player's primary function is the playback of Blu-Rays, so hence when somebody asks is this "region-free" it reasonable to conclude that:

          A) Not everyone is as anally obsessive as yourself over the correct nomenclature pertaining to different Regional Coding/DRM schemes; so they use words like regions and zones interchangeably.

          B) They were indeed referring to whether multi-region/zone Blu-Ray playback is a capability of this player.

And the fact its a bluray player i pointed out "Bluray have zones, DVD have regions."

Your point has been comprehensively obliterated. But it was fun indulging your notions of having an arcane mastery of comprehending technicalities. It makes it all the more worthwhile bringing you down a peg.

Next time you get into a pissing contest, some advice: 30 seconds of Googling is what it would have taken for you to not make a complete ass out of yourself.

Extra large slice of humble pie for my raving lunatic friend, here.

        • @Amar89: i love the effort and i'm glad i came back to the post!, but despite my master in electronics, and my 10 years in design and specialising in television and electronic repair for blaupunkt and Metz, i'll just reiterate, DVD's have Regions and Blurays have Zones.
If you dont get the obvious and clear difference, then stick to the reference websites you linked for you misguided information.

        • @ozy: Still salty?

Guess what? Your dad's hobby shop where you earn your part-time pocket money isn't an authority on jack sh*t.

You're pissing into an ocean of contradiction; so just settle down and concede defeat.

If you dont get the obvious and clear difference, then stick to the reference websites you linked for you misguided information.

You're right, I should take advice from self-appointed yahoos like you working at Australia's last Tandy outlet, who've fixed some German Hi-Fis once upon a time; which somehow means you know your way around Blu-Ray terminology and jargon better than the people who actually market and sell Blu-Ray media.

You've made me realise I'm even more right than I give myself credit for at times. It's amazing.

        • Alright guys comments are getting a bit heated and receiving complaints from other members so let's leave it at that please.

        • +2

          I was actually enjoying this

  • Playing Blu-ray discs is not a key feature of this Blu-ray player. Buyers beware :-)

  • I actually have this and it's a good little player, Samsung make good recorders and players, apparently there is a way to make it play other regions but ive never tried it

  • thanks..

If you're planning on using the DLNA or media receiver capabilities on this machine, bear in mind that it has Cinavia.

  • Does this beats the WD media player?
