Fwiw, won the 2013 Vizy Shiraz Challenge Billbro but it has been on the 'good value red' radar for a while. A lovely drop and a steal at $13.50. Unanimously given the thumbs up by our extended family which is a rarity.
And FWIW, it's the largest selling wine by value in Australia, owned by Penfolds (Treasury Wines), mass produced on a level that would make casks blush. Also the VISY award is rubbish, you think Penfolds are stupid that they would sell the RWT (Bronze) at $150 and the Pepperjack (gold/winner) at $20 if the Pepperjack really was better? I'm not saying it's a bad wine, it's also clearly not gold quality so don't be fooled by wine show results.
@soob: Wine is a bit like music and movies - the quality is in the "eye" of the beholder. Obviously the judges of Visy didn't agree with you, or vice-versa, and their collective opinion is as valid as any other. Good to see the cat among the pigeons. Show awards are the ones to be sceptical about because there are so many classes and so many shows.
Irrespective the only award that counts is the one your taste buds give you (don't like merlot particularly myself) and as we see with reputable raters one man (or womans) champion can be another's also ran. Plenty of expensive wines live off reputation. Some people think price equates with quality. Nothing revelatory there I think you'll agree. Interesting that international judges in London at the IWC rated a $30-40 bottle of shiraz as our best red. Quantity is also no indicator of quality but it can only be a good thing for consumers if they have megalitres of the stuff so we can all enjoy it at a fair price.
