Also comes with an Office Home and Student license as well which is about $120 extra separately. You can get an active stylus for it too (although I hear that it's not quite perfect, it's a Synaptics not a Wacom).

    • +2

It's tied to the BIOS though which means you cannot salvage it and use it on another device, so you can't really put a dollar value on it, but I suppose it is a cost effective way of getting access the software.

      • Depends on how Dell do it I'd imagine, if it's like it came with my Asus tablet Office was unactivated on it and there was a key for Office that I had to enter, I instead used one of my uni licenses because Outlook.

In any case, had it not come with it and you wanted it it'd be an extra $120ish.

      • Are you sure it's tied to the BIOS? The Windows 8 licence is, but Office has always come on a card. I didn't receive a card with my factory refurbed Venue 8 Pro, and Office 2013 will not activate.

Could you please check how much priority shipping is, thanks

Could you please click on the link and check for yourself, thanks

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately i don't have an Amazon account and didn't want to register just to check postage cost. I assumed that this wasn't too much asked. Sorry, my mistake

        • +19

I just checked for you mate, US$37.18 for AmazonGlobal Priority Shipping and UD$8.58 for AmazonGlobal Standard Shipping .

        • +3

          @UltraCleanMelbourne:

Thanks a lot for that. Will register. Need it by the 20.10 as a gift and it wouldn't have made sense to order with regular shipping as it wouldn't get here in time.

Will order now, mi kid will love it!

        • +16

To be honest, I just assumed it was a bit of laziness on your part. I just have a thing in general against those who ask for help without doing some legwork themselves. Sorry for assuming and for being a smartarse. Hope your child enjoys the tablet :)

          @dosada:
Unlikely you'll get it on Monday if ordered on a Friday (Australia time)

        • @GreenGuava: GreenGuava, you need to leave dosada be on this one. It's obvious dosada is my mum and she's buying this for my birthday. Yeah mum, I can read between the lines, "need it by 20/10" "my kid will love it"! Didn't even know she was an ozbargainer till now. Love you mum.

        • @Shonky: Depends on where you live dosada. I have ordered on Tuesday morning 8am and had UPS come by Thursday morning for delivery in melbourne with priority shipping.

        • @rapoot6:
Basically he's looking for an "overnight" business day with a weekend in between. I wouldn't be counting on it.

    @dosada

No worries, glad I could help a fellow ozbargainer.

    nvm.

  • Anyone know if Dell will honour the warranty internationally, or if shipping back to the US is necessary for a warranty claim?

    • Ok, just asked them and they said we can claim from Australia:

Yes but first you would have to call our technical support team and get the service tag changed to the one in AU

    • A bit cheaper, but lower spec processor, only 1GB ram…

    I'm more tempted by this:
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IZMQTH8/ref=ox_sc_act_ti…

But will need a mail forwarder

    • i have one
i sold my venue 8 pro for this

Both were ridden with bugs from day one

i would recommend the dell + stylus at this price

    • The 32 GB (same as this deal's Venue) is cheaper and ships to Aus.

I'm interested in this but am not up to date on win 8 tabs.

I already have an ipad and android tab and want a win 8 one to run basic .exe files and I feel that file management etc is easier on a full windows tab. I've played with a few in stores before so I have a general idea that it's what I want.

What I'm not up to date on is prices etc.

I would think I would want a bigger screen (around 10 inches) compared to this but don't know what's available/fast/good price:performance.

Would a surface pro 1 be comparable in performance to this? Prices seem double but if the performance is better with a larger screen size I'd probably opt for that instead.

How much are surface pro 2's going for now that 3 is out and so forth?

Anyone have a quick rundown on best price:performance for different tiers/sizes of win 8 tabs and how much I can expect to pay? Or even a link to somewhere I can read up more on them because most of them seem to be all comparing stuff in the same category of tablets, eg all 8" and a lot of them use out of date price figures. Just a list of options or something like that would be awesome.

surface 1s would blow these atoms out of the water

but depends on what you want to do
my atom tablets are generally fine for media consuption but struggle to do anything else, including youtube

but remember surfaces are thick and heavy

visit ebay/gumtree/Overclockers au forums for price guide

      • Thanks a bunch for the reply.

Since I have other tablets that are suitable for media consumption I'll probably go the Surface Pro route then.

But just to clarify something. It would be possible to play something like the game binding of Isaac or Spelunky on a full win 8 tab correct? And if so how would those kinds of games run performance-wise on an atom chip? The youtube review I saw of this tablet had the reviewer plug in an xbox controller and playing a 3d game (albeit a windows store app) so I assumed it would be capable.

Surface Pro 2s are still ~$500+ second hand.

For a variety of reasons, I have a bunch of tablets provided by work or collected at clearances, auctions or refurb off ebay. Spans ipads, android and win8.

Previous Atom series of tablets were not so good (Clovertrail) - I wouldn't get one of them. OK sometimes, terribly laggy at other times.

Current Atom series of tablets (Baytrail) are much much better. For media consumption, browsing, email, office tasks more than adequate. Very few coming in tablets with 4gig RAM though, so if you intend to use with video editing, huge photo databases etc., I'd step up to a core processor with 4-8gig RAM.

Dell Venue 8 has Baytrail Atom, and is a good machine. The stylus is crap though, don't think of getting it for that. But really the main problem is the display is something like 1280x800 or something similar - in an 8" form factor, this is not great pixel density if you do a lot of text reading/document review, and the main reason I've moved on from the Dell Venue 8 I had to a Lenovo Tablet 8, which has a full HD display.

Lenovo Tablet 8 is much more expensive however, with inferior battery life and speakers. Only a value proposition if you can pick up a good deal at an auction or similar - I got lucky with a 128gig + mobile broadband version for approx. $400. Beware that if you want to do real work on it, you will need to get a real keyboard with a real pointing device - its impossibly frustrating to do document editing on an 8" FHD windows desktop otherwise. I'm using a 2nd hand Lenovo Bluetooth keyboard with a pointing device that was made for their Clovertrail 10" tablet.

ASUS have a Baytrail 8" tablet with a Wacom digitiser which is fantastic to use apparently. There have been previously posted deals on ozbargain sourcing from amazon. Very high failure rate for the digitizer though, which is a great pity. Also not Full HD screen.

The Dell Venue 11 pro comes in Baytrail and core versions. All the core i3 and i5s have had multiple problems probably stemming from hardware + Intel chipset drivers (google for them) which seem not to have affected the Baytrail version. I have a Baytrail Venue 11 pro I got for my wife, and she loves it. Mostly uses it docked with Bluetooth keyboard/mouse and external monitor, but then will also grab it out of the docking station to use as a tablet around the house. Essentially same hardware as my Lenovo Tablet 8, including Full HD display, but in a larger form factor (no mobile broadband option in AUS or US though).

From memory I got the refurb Venue 11 Baytrail off ebay for a bit over $300 (just noticed post below - that must be the same vendor). Add to that a dock (either specific Venue 11 pro dock or dock for the previous Dell Latitude 10, which works and is what I'm using) and keyboard/cover or keyboard/battery from graysonline if you want to use it is a laptop/ultrabook as well. Keyboard/battery dock has spin-off of doubling battery life too, but quirky issue is you must not charge it separately from the tablet or you might cack it.

Overall, from what you've written, I'd say the sweet spot is probably a refurb Venue 11 Baytrail off ebay. Beware that international warranty won't apply, but if you're up for the punt, its pretty hard to beat for the baseline price.

      Hope that helps.

      • Thank you very much for taking the time and effort for that detailed write up.

        Much appreciated.

          No problem.
Sorry, can't help much directly with your gaming questions, don't do much gaming on my Win8 tablets. Quick search showed up this http://www.transformerforums.com/forum/asus-transformer-book… - somebody trying to play Spelunky on their ASUS transformer T100, which has basically the same spec as the Venue 8 and 11 pro (atom version) tablets (Baytrail atom + 2 gig ram).
Generally speaking, that thread looks pretty comprehensive re: gaming performance on Baytrail.

        • @limafoxtrot:

Heck I was hoping 2d games would be playable but these things are running 3d games decently (albeit on low settings). I didn't even imagine they'd be powerful enough to do this so I didn't even consider looking up gaming benchmarks for them let alone the prospect of doing it for every individual available chip and then cross referencing that to individual makes and models.

You've sold me on the Venue 11 too, at first I was thinking $300 for a refurb that may or may not be able to play 2d games was a bit of a stretch but for a machine that can run 3d games I would probably start recommending it + docking bay to everyone who ask me to recommend a machine for for general browsing and internet usage too.

I can tell you put a lot of time and effort into this advice so thanks, because it would have taking me magnitudes more starting with my current level of knowledge.

          do itashimashite

Like many ozbargainers, this info/research thing can get a bit obsessive. It certainly p****** my wife off no end, esp when she sees me reading yet more reviews for something I've ALREADY got. So somebody else might as well gain from my pain! ;)

(BTW just had a quick thought that Venue 11 Pro Baytrail will be slower in native res compared to the Asus T100 - just by virtue of FHD vs 1366x768. But I guess you can always push the res down to compensate.)

        • @limafoxtrot:

It certainly feels like this doesn't it. Lol

I'm the same, and it's especially bad when it comes to tech because new stuff comes out so fast and reviews for the old stuff is basically just saying 'oh your stuff is aging and the price probably dropped 10% since the last time you checked'. Especially when you see the same thing on ozbargain 2 weeks later.

Or even worse when you use it for a bit and an aspect comes up you didn't think of before the purchase and so look at reviews about it and realize you made the wrong choice and but have to live with it and it antagonizes you every time you encounter it lol.

But you just can't help yourself unless you decide to go cold turkey til the itch comes back because of a bargain post. :p

        • @limafoxtrot:

I can picture lima sitting seiza style on the floor while the wife pulls on his earlobe saying stop spending money on more gadgets

        • @scrimshaw:

With all of his tablets arranged around all showing reviews of each other like some sort of technological yin yang wheel of life formation being the only illumination in the room as if it were a ritual to summon the next tablet (via ebay). :)

        • @scrimshaw:
Seiza style kills me. Bad knees and old age. I'd probably be more comfortable being hung from my big toes! But you have me thinking, I might set up a shrine to the Gods of Ozbargain in my tatami room.

I think I may have reached saturation point with my wife re: gadget turnover. About 6 months ago when I was using a new 8" ASUS tablet off graysonline for a couple of weeks without any comment whatsoever, I realised that she no longer can keep track of what I have and am using, what I had and she is now using, what I got her and I am now using, what we had and the kids are now using, what we have and is in a drawer, what we had but have given away, or what we had but have sold on ebay.

After many years of having to plead, "But it was sooooo cheap…", I have now possibly attained the ecstatic state of WAF nirvana :)

Trying to decide between this and the 11" model for $300 here - http://www.ebay.com/itm/161424391916

    • +1

Well the saving is bigger. The Venue 11 starts at $799 here.

I guess other differences include refurb (ebay) and new (Amazon).

If the extra size/weight doesn't bother you I would go the Venue 11.

      • The Venue 11 starts at $799 here.

        Wow, didn't realise that

Pretty much just need something for digital note taking, it's a touch decision…

        Note: weight difference is 400g / 710g

    • +2

      IMO it's a no brainer.

Full HD panel and double the storage space for not even 1/3rd the cost more.

    • +1

Oh my thats a good deal 32gb just doesnt really cut it as I have the Encore and there is no HD space.

this Venue 11 has 64gbs, 8mp camera and more powerful cpu, only down side is no MS Office but you could just run open office.

      • AFAIK the 64gb in the Venue Pro 11 is SSD style fast flash, whilst the 32gb in the Venue Pro 8 has very slow eMMC based flash. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

So it should be snappier in every way too.

  • Using Thinkpad 12" now and love it though it is over 5 years old. Will prefer a windows tab with a keyb and mouse as have to dial remotely to the servers while travelling sometimes.
Waiting for a good price for 10-11" Asus/ Samsung Windows Tab with keyboards and track point or will get Asus Android Tab with keyboard doc as Microsoft's RDP application is now available in Android as well.

  • FWIW, I had an Asus Vivotab 8 Note that I unfortunately cracked the screen on and after realising the repair price (more than RRP), I then bought this Dell (but the 64GB model).

The Dell fits in my pocket and is light enough to be carried around (same comments apply to the Asus).

Meets my needs, although the Asus is superior in terms of its stylus, however my one was (and I think they may still be) very buggy, and there was a reasonably significant hardware failure with the digitiser for the stylus.

If only I could have an 11" but only weighing ~400g and have more than a 24 hour battery life.

  • Good buy at this price as I previously got mine for $299.

  • The price has gone down a little. USD$196.04 now, $204.62 delivered.

  • Cant decide whether or not to buy this or a refurbished nexus 7 for $110

    Anyone have any opinions?

    • What are you going to do with it?

      • ebooks
        tv shows/movies when traveling
bit of spreadsheets & worky stuff

        • ebooks

Kindle software, exists on both Android / Windows. Both tablets have the same 1280 x 800 resolution, though the DPI is lower on the Venue 8 since it's an 8" tab.

          tv shows/movies when traveling

Both fairly equal. I guess the Venue 8 wins a little in terms of media usage since it can expand storage via SD card and the screen is a tad bigger. Nexus 7 will require OTG cable.

bit of spreadsheets & worky stuff

Will be best on Windows, you get Office 365 and it will support OneNote + stylus (must buy seperately) handwriting. Good for worky stuff.

  • the dell outlet has a few 64 gig versions AUD$318 for refurb or $389 for as new.
these are 3G version (says for wireless , Dell Wireless 5570 HSPA+ Mobile Broadband MiniCard (SIM not included))
and as it is Australian the charger is fine, no adaptor needed.
