    • Papparich at Chadstone and QV is not on the list?

  • Gift cards are not eligible transactions.

How would Amex know whether the purchase is a gift card?

    • Depends if the merchant identifies the sale through the CC machine as a gift card purchase or not. Most don't.

    • +1

I haven't had an email yet either. ANZ Amex. Who are you with?

      • CBA

    • My confirmation emails came through now, took about 4 hours.

Any idea, where I can charge Myki card?

  • Hmm this list/map needs to be updated. Few places dont exist anymore, and another couple i went to didnt accept amex

    • -3

Yep, this "promotion" usually highlights how many retailers no longer take Amex, and why. Their website is NOT kept up to date. This is more an anti-promotion than a promotion.

  • awesome one of my fav. cafes on the list, half price coffee and beans for a month!

    • Only one reward per retailer.

      • "Only one reward per retailer."

        Unless you have multiple cards…

  • +2

    Hi guys,

Even though some shops on the list don't accept amex anymore, you can still claim $10 if you spend $20 or more, all you have to do is to contact amex customer service and they would issue you a credit. I tried that before in nov 2013 and August 2014.

    • -1

"… all you have to do is to contact amex customer service and they would issue you a credit."

Did you have to email them a pic/scan of your receipt, or what?

      • They didn't ask for it but I had all receipts to prove the purchases in case they ask for it.

        • OK cheers fk, I'll keep all receipts too then, just in case.

      • nevermind I can't read.

    • Really? this promotion is just encourage people to use AMEX card, if we use other cards, then get $10 from AMEX, what's the point to do this.

      • +13

Amex clearly tries very hard to build some brand loyalty by doing successful promotions that make customers happy.

Now if Amex lists a restaurant as participant, then you go to that restaurant, assuming to get a discount off the bill, but that restaurant does not accept Amex any more you are bound to be a very unhappy customer. By paying you the cashback anyway Amex makes you happy and at the same time they get valuable information to update their database. Win, win, for a very small expense.

There is nothing worse than a promise not kept or an expectation not met (as Ezibuy will find out), but going above and beyond the minimum requirements when fixing a mistake leaves a lasting positive impression, more so than not making the mistake in the first place.

  • Anyone notice good things in Perth???

    • Use one of the listed chemists…
Must be something you need for half price …even $10 off a script.
      Use one of the newsagents….
$10 of Saturday papers or anything up to $12.00 then add a 12 number lotto ticket for nothing…could work out real well..
or $8.00 and an 18 game lotto ticket.
heaps of good things if you look
pool chemicals if you have a pool

      • +1

A lot of newsagents won't take amex for lotto (or smokes).

        • Hmmm…never had a problem using visa…did not have a chance to try amex today

    • Mondo Butchers in Osborne Park, then KwikFuel nearby. Do both in the same trip!

    • No problem using amex for lotto.
Used to be banned but since tickets went online now is allowed.

    • Try your local chemist I got the credit on my scripts today was pleased about that costs a bloody fortune as it is.

      • +4

Is the price higher than places like Chemist Warehouse though?

        • As long as it's not double the price, if you buy $20 worth you're still ahead

        • @mrgq:
Dont forget the one hour wait at chemist warehouse.

    • +3

A list of participating Perth outlets is forming here http://bit.ly/shopsmallperth

  • I just tried to login to amex online banking and it wants me to register again. Is anyone else getting this? I have the BMW card.

  • Normal log in all all our cards …shows we are registered and a small merchant finder also supplied

  • For Sydneysiders, Metro Petroleum and Budget Fuel are on the list - happy days :D

  • +1

I don't have an AMEX but I + this post as its a really great initiative by AMEX to support small business in Australia. No doubt they get some coin too but still a fantastic idea that I hope the other schemes will follow suit.

  • If I register my main card and use my supplementary card (different name, same number) will I still get the rebate?

    • The Amex Plat Edge card has different numbers on our three supp cards and we register all the cards and get rebates on each..
I would imagine if your numbers are the same you will only get ONE rebate

      • From Terms and Conditions

. Supplementary Cards qualify as an Eligible Card only if registered for the Offer separately.
Where the Primary and Supplementary Card number is identical only one
registration can be made per account

  • so do you need to redeem anything to get money back? Or is automatically credited back to you just by spending >$20 at the participating merchants?

    • Automatic

  • Has anyone used their Amex card at a merchant charging a surcharge on Amex cards and successfully received the rebate? i.e. received the conformation email from Amex after the transaction?

    • Just got third $20 fill at the Brisbane outlet in Wooloowin.
This time copped the dreaded surcharge (not on previous two lots)
Did not see a surcharge sign so a bit sneaky to inform after the fuel delivered.
Still 50c odd to save $10 ok by me.
Will report back when confirmation of credit comes through

      • Thanks for that, but I'm worried about this passage in the terms and conditions: "American Express Card Members will not be able to redeem this offer at merchants who are not accepting, differentially surcharging and suppressing American Express Cards."

        Please others report their experience..

        • Interesting point 2 true
No surcharge on first two dockets so at least those should get through

        • How would Amex know whether there was a surcharge or not?

        • +5

Had a long very interesting conversation with Amex in regard to surcharges.
The bottom line is you WILL get the rebate regardless of whether the merchant is differentially charging for use of Amex.

        • 4 rebates now on the statement for fuel where surcharge applied

        • Thanks for the info IanC. Wooloowin Matilda has a tiny little sign below eye level on the counter that says 2% surcharge on AMEX. Sneaky, they should have it on the door or pump! But they let me split my payment onto 3 cards, so I can't complain :-)

        • They actually have it on the pump also.
The surcharge however was 55c on $20 .Clearly not 2% and the guy
explained the extra15c was gst on the surcharge.
At least I had a laugh.

  • Dining ideas for people in Melbourne.

    The Stables of Como
    Hammer and Tong
    Little Tommy Tucker
Jimmy Grants (used today and accepts amex)
    Brother Burgers
    Chinta Ria Soul
    Miss Chu

    Although it mentions on amex website, did not accept at;
    Miss marmalade (tried and failed)

    • Did you go to Jimmy Grants Fitzroy or Emporium?

      • Jimmy Grants at Emporium does not accept AMEX.

      • Fitzroy. Used 2 cards, ~$20 each.

  • So the best things to get the $10 back on would seem to be anything that you definitely will need to buy in the future at some stage, which is never discounted much. That way, you can use the $10 saved for anything you want, anywhere, anytime in the future. The most obvious thing I can think of for me personally is fuel (quite a few options in VIC, but sadly, not quite 10 that are near me). For non-drivers the equivalent would be the PT-card top-ups. The other smart things suggested so far include stamps ($20 worth for $10; if you had unlimited AMEX cards you could pull a genuine Ponzi scheme!), pool chemicals if you have a pool, lotto tickets if you buy those anyway, and cigarettes if you smoke.

I guess if you had a mate with an AMEX who used PT/had no car, you could buy him (another) $20 PT credit, and he could buy you (another) $20 fuel, effectively allowing both of you to utilise the deal twice at the one retailer. Sadly I know no one else with AMEX.

Anyways, what I'm keen to locate now are the places on the list that sell groceries (at vaguely reasonable/normal prices). Apart from "The Great Eastern Grocery" posted above (nice find 'Melbournian'!), has anyone found any in their neck of the woods in VIC? Preferably in the inner suburbs? Please reply here if so.

    • +1

plenty of pharmacies on the list

    • There's a$100 limit so no point in going all ponzi on it

      • "There's a $100 limit so no point in going all ponzi on it"

Yeah, that limit is per card, which is why I said "if you had unlimited cards"
I was really just making a joke about the fact that the original Ponzi scheme was based on getting postal credits ("stamps" effectively) at way under the market rate, then selling them at the market rate. At least that's what Ponzi had everyone believing for a while…

    • I am planning to go to Aunt Maggies to buy Carman's Deluxe Gluten Free Muesli. (Never seen it on special).

      • Not sure what is considered 'special' for this stuff Melb, but did you know you can buy it on COTD?
        Currently you can get 800 g (2 packs of 400 g) for $8.96.

        http://www.catchoftheday.com.au/event/42802/

If you're not already a member of COTD and decide to join up, make sure you do it via one of the "random referrers links" posted on here periodically in conjunction with deals, because then you'll get $10 free COTD credit after you make your first purchase (the free credit is good/better than vouchers/codes, cause it lasts for a year and it can be used for postage costs; unlike most of their vouchers/codes.

      Basfoods in Brunswick

      • Awesome HS, I wasn't aware of that joint before but they're evidently a 'wholesale importer/supplier' type-joint with a couple of shop-fronts open to the public; one of which is in Brunswick! Close, for me! YAY!

Dunno why I forgot to search Brunswick on the "ShopSmall" site, but anyways, after your post I did and another that came up was OMARA supermarket. I've actually shopped there many times… the stuff is cheap, and the opening hours are awesome. A word of warning though, don't go there expecting "service with a smile"… they're a sort of "no frills" type operation in that respect. They are NOT rude, OR offensive, just… "a bit detached"? Well… I dunno how to describe it; they're not bad folk at all, just check it out if you're in the area/ have an AMEX card/ want $20 of groceries for $10.

While I'm here I might as well mention another cool find from yesterday, for those that like Beef jerky/ Biltong: "Gourmet Meats" on Glenferrie Rd, Hawthorn sells Biltong for ~$65/kg, which is already about as cheap as you'll get decent stuff, and it's part of this AMEX "SS" caper… so for $10 (after the AMEX rebate), you can get ~300 grams of AWESOME biltong from there. VERY nice tasting too, I must say.

  • Is everyone getting their "Thank you for Shopping Small" email after their purchases?

  • For those businesses not accepting AMEX or imposing a surcharge, you can report them here. May not be addressed within the promotion period but at least they will know about it.

  • Seems to me that best use would be Public Transport top ups followed by petrol purchases
For multiple card holders some serious dollars to be gained with this promo
For punters $10 off a lotto ticket may appeal.

    • Wish I'd thought of that ;P lol

  • with multiple cards does everyone use the same email or use 1 per card?

    • +1

      one email

    • +1

I've used the same e-mail for all my cards. Hasn't been a problem in the past.

  • +1

Found two good places for Melbournians (confirmed both in person).

SUPANEWS Chadstone for MYKI (no surcharge. not sure if you can use for lotto/scratchies didn't ask).

Myer Emporium - go to the information desk and you can buy Emporium gift cards. Although there is a $1.50 card fee and 3% amex surchage, you are still saving roughly 40% on a $20 card. P.s. Check the accepted merchants list first. Includes most places but I noticed uniqlo was missing.

Plenty of good dining places too, I'm having high quality lunches every day now hahaha.

    • thank mate, do you know any shop small in city can recharge myki?

      • Sorry don't know.

    • I thought gift cards are not eligible transactions.

  • +1

Amazing…MSY Canberra is on the list :D

  • Bah. I can't find any Opal retailer where I frequent that will accept Amex. St Leonards Forum Newsagency is listed (both on Shop Small and Opal.com.au) but when I went there they flat out refused to take credit card payments for Opal top ups, even with a surcharge.
