Ziova Clearstream CS505 - DVD player / digital multimedia receiver
The ZIOVA Clearstream CS505 High Definition Network Media Player gives users four connectivity options in one unit: wireless networking, Ethernet wired networking, optical disc playback and USB 2.0 hard drive connection. It has unprecedented file format support including high definition Windows Media Video 9 and MPEG4 playback.

The CS505's music playback capability handles all the formats enthusiasts have longed for, including the high definition FLAC lossless compressed format, OGG, AAC (commonly used in Apple iTunes), MP3, Windows Media Audio 9, CD Audio and others. Video playback is also astonishingly comprehensive. The CS505 handles playback in Windows Media Video 9, XviD, Nero Digital, MPEG-4, QuickTime MPEG-4, MPEG-2, MPEG-1, DVD, and other formats.

The CS505 is engineered from the ground up for high performance networking, with Ethernet and 54Mbit/s 802.11G wireless networking integrated. The Internet is just a button away on the CS505, with instant access to features such as local weather, and support for streaming Internet radio stations.

There's only 6 left , please note this is actually a bad product at the original price approx $579.00 then it went down to $299.00 currently at $80.00 which is about right for a upscaling dvd player that does usb please note with new firmware mine goes up to 1080p (so it says) but you lose the weather channel.

Wireless is almost impossible to get working , any tips would be appprecaited check out the forums www.ziova.com for an honest opinion

I now have both the cs6XX and the CS5XX nice addition to a multimedia setup etc

  • Unreal man. Thanks for posting!

Just got one put aside, there purchasing department actually paid $380 for these things. What a steal!

Just make sure you update the firmware to the new one v2 , go to the website join myziova and your serial and mac address then download the usb firmware recovery v2 and make sure to use a real usb2.0 usb stick i tried many that were supposed to be usb 2.0 but they didnt work till i got a real usb2.0 stick

With the firmware that comes with the machine it hardly works at alll except the weather channel which you lose when upgrading the firmware.

      Mike

      • Will do! Hopefully one of the USB Sticks I have are actually 2.0 and I can update it!

The connectivity of this box for $80 is unreal. Good bye media center PC if this thing works for me. :)

        Thanks agian.

  • Can you stream avi's from your pc wirelessly with this player??

    • if you can get the wireless setup working , for me no havent managed to get the wireless working on my network i just plug it in for now, still trying to work it out.

      • I just brought one, For $80 + $15 shipping it's worth a try, Will be good for the kids room :)

  • Aha! - This is exactly the thing I need.

Sadly, upon reading reviews and gossip across the web, it is too good to be true. Apparently it crashes playing normal DVDs, has issues with a number of file formats, takes a minute to start up, the manufacturer is not supportive and the wifi takes forever to set up.

    • with firmware upgraded it actually works properly although file formats are hit and miss

This unit seems to be a beta hardware. There is lack of support and no new firmware to fix so many issues. I will stay away from this.

Don't know why companies design/build great products then stuff up what would seem to be the simple stuff like on-screen menus, reliable operation, improved firmware updates, etc

    • +1

Have to agree, the company seemed to have turned on the owners of the product

  • No longer available :-(

  • Happy to help anyone with support , they can be touchy to get working

  • Might have to take you up on that,

  • Happy to help :)

    • i need help :) can't get the wireless to work

  • i got cs615 from them a few weeks ago - best investment i ever made.
i would highly recommend this one as well providing you know how to set it up.

    • That's comforting. I'm yet to set mine up, but after reading some reviews yesterday I have lower my expectations a little. :)
Will set it up tonight and post a little review. I'm going to be using Wireless/WPA. So I'm in for some headaches, I'm sure!

      • please let us know how you go as i cannot get the wireless setup but love my cs 605 and my new cs 505 also please make sure you update the firmware as its much quicker through the menu's etc

    • how much did you get the cs 605 for ? i bought it at crazy stu a while back but interested in the HT price ?

  • I can't get the wireless to go ??? any ideas? Is there something i'm missing?

    • It doesn't connect or what? Need more details..

I set mine up last night, had a few problems.

I downloaded latest firmware it started to update and the unit came up with an error in the last stages of the update. I reset the unit, and it didn't boot up.. Thought I had wasted $80 for a moment. Got the recovery software package install on my usb and everything updated, thank god! Now I'm running the latest firmware. Wireless was easy to setup using WPA, the unit connected after a reboot and I was able to listen to radio stations etc. So that's working.

Next was to try and setup my network shares. I am currently running windows 7 on my main PC which houses all my files I want to share. I made a few folders available to everyone on the network but the device doesn't seem to find the shares.. for some reason unbeknownst to me. Hopefully I can work this out, my networking skills are highly lacking.. I really don't want to use some software package that I'll have to run in the background on my PC just to share some files. I was hoping I could just right click and share and away it would go.. Wishful thinking I know! :)

All in all; the unit works! Doesn't support NTFS it seems, as my portable hard drive was unrecognized. So I may have to change file system formats, not a huge issue I suppose.
Lucky wireless was a breeze to setup for me.

      I did say I'd write a little review.. :P

    • I Should mention I changed my wireless router to automatically pick a channel.. Which may or may not help you. I originally had it set to channel 9 and it didn't seem to be working. Changed to auto and it worked. Possibly uses an odd or different region channel then most Australian devices, I'm not sure.

Let me know exactly what your problem is and I'll try and help! :)

      • Awesome i will try that tonight , thankyou i was going crazy with this i tried the channels one by one but no success

      • doh i had mine left on auto, so that didnt work but thank you for your help

which wpa did you use wpa-personal or something else ? and what encryption are you using ? thanks :)

        • Yeah, and what's your WAP password, and what's your encryption key,, and what's your address thanks,,, and is there a spare parking space in front of your place???
Oh, and is it OK if I use a power point in your garage to recharge my laptop when the battery runs down? ;) ;) ;)
          \_/7

  • the portable hdd in my guess was not a true usb 2.0 hrd drive hope that helps :)

    • I'll give another drive a try.. Pretty sure it is USB 2.0. It's brand new. I got another external drive which I'll try tonight.

So if it's not USB 2.0, the unit just doesn't pick them up at all? That's a bit strange.

      • dont worry i had the same thing, good luck :) i went through a few usb drives and sticks till i have found my good ones now they are ziova only lol

the cs-605 is better because it bookmarks if you work out how to do it on this one i would be keen to find out?

        • Ok, well after a long time last night I was finally able to get shares working, got my external hard drive to work (turns out it wasn't getting enough power..) I started to test some music, which worked perfectly and sounded great.. Which was expected. Had lots of problems trying to get .avis to worked. Some play, some start and freeze, others just refuse to work..

Look like it's going on the bay, and I'm keeping my HTPC.. :P

          • @Koonit: Have to say after getting my shares to work (wired) i am very happy, plays much better than directly off a usb stick although my router has a usb port and i plug a drive into that and share it. Mine plays evcerything except h26 and newer formats although no problem with avi etc

Good luck i might even just bid on it :)

  • Looks like WPA is the problem, turn it off and wireless works, I haven't tried WEP but that might be the go, as least it's better than no security.
