  • It was available for $19+(free Sydney pickup or P/H $7.50) according to this expired deal but has gone back up to $29.95 so I guess this is the best current deal. Thanks OP.

    • more of an unboxing than a review. Despite being gigabit hardware, transfer speeds can still be woeful…..although this review says transfer rates are good

      • Wow, it really pays to help out the ozbargain community. Go out of your way to find a helpful link and you get neg'd. Next time i wont bother.

  • I have one good for the price but transfer rates are slow. 1.25mb a sec. Can always plug USB to to big file changes. Has trouble hosting high bitrate 720p mkv to smart TV. I use it for SD tvshows and movies and the stuff my kids watches. I turn my PC that has Plex on it on to watch HD content.

I don't watch much HD stuff so it isn't a drama for me.

    • Have you tried logging in via the FTP address to see if you get better speeds?

I have a similar issue with my Netgear router when using the USB sharing with a 2TB external desktop drive. I was getting ~4MB/s write over samba and got ~10MB/s once I looked into it and connected via FTP.

    • what version firmware do you have? I found v2.30 here - http://www.hersheng.com/noontec-n5-firmware-v-230

I don't know if that is the latest, but the dansdata review mentioned v2.17 and the transfers were about 8X that speed at the very least with SMB to windows boxes.

EDIT: ok looks like v2.36 is the latest - http://www.terra-master.com/html/en/article_list_163.html
(link to firmware is invalid, so I've contacted Terramaster Thailand facebook page and hopefully the correct link will be available soon).

The Noontec N5 is the Terramaster U1 - same firmware.

what the heck.. I've ordered 3 of these (for Christmas presents for friends and family) - turns out combined postage works out to $2 for 3, instead of $3! so ozbargained! hahaah.

  • No I haven't tried that. After thinking about it I didn't have any trouble with HD stuff until I updated to the latest firmware. So maybe updating the firmware isn't a good idea. The menus and BT client improve out of sight with the new firmware though. But I remember I was surprised on how well it played 1080p but then the last few since firmware update have had yo stop and buffer a lot in the last third of the movie

  • When it says it can support up to 3TB sata…. how true is that statement?

I pondering whether I can put my 4TB WD reds inside it.

    • I've only got 3TB WD greens, so can't test sorry.

  • The specs on the shoppingsquare site state - Hard Disk Supports Single 3.5 SATA, capacity supports over 3TB

  • Does anyone know the actual power consumption of the unit itself?? (I realise that total power consumption will be variable depending on which HDD you install). I can't seem to find any specs on it.

    • the specs I saw (and yes it will be dependent on HDD used) suggested 0.3W in standby and 15W peak.

IF it supports wake on LAN, I'll be very happy as I'll set this up for family as their 'dropbox' for photos etc.

  • just notified that my order is shipping, will report back my thoughts on the NAS boxes after they arrive and I've had a little time to play with them.

  • +1

ok, I have these - but STILL haven't had time to even open the boxes and check them out.

I did this offer is available again in the current shopping square email - http://www.shoppingsquare.com.au/product.php?id=277424&n=302…
