  • Gluten-Free Weet-Bix

So it doesn't contain wheat ???

    • +1

Correct. It is mainly made of sorghum - a gluten free grain. My kids love being able to have what they see as "normal" cereal.

      • Try a small pack of it first b4 you go overboard. Its pretty horrible tasting IMO. nothing like regular west bix a lot lighter and dryer. More like a rice cake.

        • Why would you eat gluten-free if you could eat the normal ones?
These are for people who don't have a choice.

Correct. It is mainly made of sorghum

So they should change the label to Sorg-Bix maybe…

        • or Borg Six particularly if they are anything like Seven of Nine

      • You have more than one child with diagnosed gluten intolerance? That's unfortunate.

My wife and two daughters are FODMAP intolerant. This includes gluten, fructose, soy, and unfortunately many other foods. But it's not unworkable. But you learn to read the ingredients on the pack, that's for sure!

And you learn to stock up on these types of deals because gluten free food is typically so expensive

No they are the lucky ones. It's the undiagnosed ones that are unfortunate.

Missus didn't get diagnosed until mid-thirties after breaking ribs several times for little apparent reason. turned out she had the bone density of a 70 year old and coeliac disease was the discovered culprit. After cutting gluten out, a dozen related but misdiagnosed and treated ailments she had suffered with all her life were gone within weeks. Unfortunately it was too late for some things.

Many similar stories about but its good to see there's more awareness of the problem nowadays, especially in the medical profession. I read an interesting article about a doctor who had suffered all his life and recently discovered the cause - in his 70s

From what I read (#4), gluten is different to FODMAP but just happens to be in many foods which are sources of FODMAP.

          @shmahoo:

My wife has problems with gluten (not coeliac but if she eats white bread etc then she has a bad time). I found that a very good purchase very early on was something like this…

          http://www.omniblendaustralia.com.au/shop/omniblend-v-onyx-2…

The reason for this is because you can get standard grains from the shop for super cheap, and this blender is so powerful it will reduce them down to a workable flour (well, it works for me anyway).

For example, this recipe (http://minimalistbaker.com/the-best-gluten-free-pizza-crust-…) calls for 1 cup brown rice flour, 1 cup white rice flour, 1 cup tapioca flour, 1/2 tsp xanthan gum. You can buy the tapioca in little tins at coles, and for the white and brown rice flour, well, you put them in the omniblend and blend them at really high speed. The flour, when its done, will be actually quite hot to the touch (like hot sand almost) because of how warm the blending process makes it, but I've made that GF pizza recipe for a coeliac friend and shes really enjoyed it.

I ended up finding out, through trial and error, that my wife doesnt so much mind gluten, her body doesnt like wheat. So I bake a lot of stuff nowadays with spelt flour. Spelt has a poor quality gluten in it (and much less of it). I'd encourage anyone who doesn't get violently ill on having gluten to give spelt flour a shot and see if its the gluten thats killing you, or just the wheat. If it is, in fact, just the wheat thats giving you a hard time and spelt is fine for you, its much, much easier to bake and work with.

Anyway its 12:47am and i'm rambling now….. Did you know the rain in spain DOESN'T mainly fall on the plain? Spain is actually quite mountainous.

always good to make/mix your own flour - you might like to also try using corn/maize, quinoa, chickpea, spelt flours :)

I love these. A great approximation to an old favourite. Especially after 9 years of GF abstinence the taste was just like I remember. Well done Sanitarium. Glad Woolies are now selling this as well as Coles.

  • I gather Brett Lee will go for the 26 option
