  • My girlfriend has an old iPod classic that's currently dying and she has purchased a lot of music on iTunes. Looking to get her a replacement MP3 player for her birthday, would this be a good option?

Also would she no longer be able to use her iTunes paid music on this device? If not I might have to buy another iPod Classic (though they're discontinued :( )

or just use an iphone or ipod Touch…

you can still quite easily buy an ipod classic

    • that's currently dying

With all due respect that's an imminent certainty with iPods.

I would humbly recommend a Sony Walkman E-Series MP3 Player.

It's absolutely tiny and lightweight (very nearly the dimensions of the new iPod Nano), the battery life is ridiculous (up to 48 hours playback with the brightness turned down), the sound quality is far superior to anything you'll hear from any smartphone or Apple device, no software is required, just dragging and dropping files will do and best of all, it's currently cheaper than an iPod Nano.

I own both an older S-Series Walkman and a newer E-Series and they have no equal in the sub-$100 dollar MP3 player market.

    Does it play vinyl ???

  • 2 inch display.
Hi res. For what? Covers of MP3 files?
Should these be sold for 1/3 of the advertised price?

    • 2 inch display.

      on a cold day…

Hi-Res refers to FLAC files and files that relatively extreme Studio Grade Sound. It's based on the frequency (Hz), and so this is basically an audiophile weapon, not really made for a normal consumer with casual music.

Sorry not having a go but I could not stop laughing at "casual music".

        Filthy casual listeners :P

  • Can it support more than 128GB? The spec says "supports largest capacity available (currently 128GB)".

  • looks interesting. I've been following the ibasso dx50 but this may just be the shizzle.

  • Plenty on MassDrop for heaps more than 5% off. Just confusing of which one to get. And they overcharge shipping ($50) and take 3 months.

I thought this was a replacement for the x5, but it looks more like a budget 'consumer' version.

Still, stacked with a nice portable amp, this would be a sweet budget setup.

If your primary concern is sound-quality and lossless playback, then yes FiiO players are great.

However, if you want decent battery life, reliable and crash-free firmware, an easy-to-navigate UI that you can learn without the manual and normal, industry-standard MP3 player features (like playlist support); then you should probably pass on a FiiO.

Do be aware these are heavily weighted towards accurate sound reproduction and totally skimp on user experience.

This may be a better compromise for people considering the FiiO X series: http://www.sony.com.au/product/nwz-zx1 (Steep price tag yes, but a more laymen-friendly interface and feature-set, along with build quality and reliability.)
