  • Is RED 7200RPM? Can use as a desktop drive?

    • +1

No they are 5400, but yes, you can use on the desktop. Keep in mind that these would consume more energy than the green models.

      • OK too slow as the boot drive but OK for second drive.

        • +4

always use a 128GB SSD for boot, there is only marginal improvement between 5400 and 7200 for boot.

        • +1

A smallish SSD for boot would be a better investment. 128GB is enough for your OS, Office, all your apps, user profile, etc - everything else goes on a HDD.

The WD RED is really built as a NAS drive. 5400rpm is actually pretty good when you have 4 of them on a decent RAID controller.

        • @WalterPPK: Be careful following this advice. Apps like steam default to putting the library on c drive if you install on the c drive … A few big apps will blow 128gb before you know it and windows will choke..
You're better off installing as many apps on the secondary (non SSD) drive as possible
There are some good guides about how to configure a small SSD with a larger non SSD disk. Do a search … Well worth it.

I don't believe you should be using the wd red as a single drive in your PC… Due to the nature of the reds they are NAS specific drives and should be used in pairs

  • +2

I wish you had this offer over the last 2 months.. finally bought a few in the ebay 15% off. but good price!

  • +1

Great price and love the free shipping option. Stocked up on WD Reds for an upcoming NAS build just now!

  • +1

Im trying to resist as I want to get the 6TB ones.

    • +1

Ya same.. Only if the 6tb is the same ratio cost… I would have snapped up 4 of them.

  • Any deals or recommendations on a 4 bay to fill with these?

    • +8

We've got plenty of 4 bay NAS's to choose from

      http://www.ple.com.au/ViewCategory.aspx?CategoryId=551

at the checkout feel free to use the coupon NASDISCOUNT for 10% off a NAS of your choice with your HDD's :)

      • code doesn't see, to work?

    • I'm in the same boat ATM, pretty much settled on the Asustor 304T. Just have to wait to get the right price, they're around $540.

(Here you go, the OP has them in stock:
      http://www.ple.com.au/ViewItem.aspx?InventoryItemID=616370&C… )

Still a bit exe for me ATM. :)

      • +1

        cheers. seems pretty good.

I've been considering the QNAP TS-469L which seems similar. ~$100 more and QNAP has faster processor.

I'm still not entirely sold on the idea of HDMI/media paying NAS though. maybe better and cheaper to keep separate.

    • If you can afford the Synology, I can recommend them highly. Here is my list of "Synology is awesome but you should know this" caveats:

      1. They don't automatically apply updates, but can be set to notify by email/SMS/SNMP etc when an update is ready to be applied.

      2. Always eject any USB devices before applying updates. Why? For some reason, they tend to just sit there waiting and not really doing anything if you try to reboot with a USB drive still mounted.

      3. If you want to use it for on-the-fly video transcoding, check the specs sheets carefully. Only the "play" models include a hardware transcoder. The other models will do it, but might not be able to keep up with full HD stuff.

      4. If you plan to use the CCTV functions, you do get ONE free camera license. Extra licenses for more cameras are NOT cheap.

      5. Setup and test notifications. There's no point having a good RAID array if it doesn't tell you when it needs attention. I've come across a few end users who lost their data because their drives had failed a year earlier and they'd never even noticed.

      6. The last two digits of the model number are the model year so the DS414 is a 2014 model, while the DS213 is a 2013 model.

      • thanks for the info. I'm actually shopping for a mate who's asked me for some help. My latest suggestion is Synology DS213J because I figure it's good for a novice, and I think 4TB will do him for a while. If he needs extra space for non-critical things he can expand with a USB drive (I think??)

  • What's their best 2 bay NAS enclosure under $250 ?
Assuming it's between the QNAP TS-212P a and the Synology DS213J.

    Thank you.

    • +1

I just bought the Synology DS213J and I love it. I've never used a NAS before, but the UI/OS on it is fantastic and very easy to use.

      • Thank you

        • Another vote here for the DS213J. Amazing piece of kit and incredibly flexible. Also it has extremely low power usage in standby mode which was one of it's big draws for me.

        • @wasabinator: Power usage - draws lol

        • @scottb721: Ah I didn't notice that I'd hatched a pun :)

  • Great Deal! Thank you for posting.

  • I'm getting an invalid viewstate error in the checkout

edit - got it working :)

  • +2

No silly card surcharges gets a vote from me.

  • Great deal! I hope they're still in stock on Wednesday (payday!).
