Hungry Jack's Now Accepting "Free Tickets" from "Competing Quick-Service Restaurant"

2124

Real flame-grilled taste, like air, is vital to life. No one should be denied it – our friends, our family and all Australians.

So redeem your FREE tickets* at Hungry Jack’s instead,
because everyone deserves a better flame-grilled burger.

*IN NO WAY AUTHORISED OR ENDORSED BY YOU KNOW WHO.
TERMS & CONDITIONS APPLY. SEE IN-STORE PLACARD OR CLICK HERE TO VIEW.

Store Rep's note:
The stand-out deals here are the Brekky Wrap, Small Hot Beverage (free coffee refills at HJ's) and Sausage Muffin. Don't bother with making up your own "free tickets" to play on the vagueness of who the competitor is. I've already tried that, haha.

    awesome idea

    • +12

      Completely agree!

      Just clarifying for everyone:
When you get a Monopoly voucher from a McDonalds purchase you have a chance of winning an "Instant Win" food prize.
Chances are you will not redeem that prize on the same visit.

What HJ has done, is that instead of coming back to McDonalds to redeem your prize, you go to HJ.

As you are likely to make an actual purchase when redeeming your prize, they make money.

Hence excellent way to piggy back on McDonalds promotion.

      • +23

Shhh, you aren't supposed to mention they-who-must-not-be-named.

      • Yeah, but they barely match while downgrading everything they can.

        Beef burger to Whooper Jr?

Frappe/Smoothie to the $1 Frozen coke or soft drink?

Besides, you need to eat at Maccas to get one of the tickets, therefore you are not adverse to Maccas. So why not just redeem it at Maccas?? Its not like they are giving away an Aussie burger for any beef burger ticket.

  • +18

    I'm confused

    • +18

hungry jacks are now taking maccas vouchers

      • Yes, but if there's like a free big mac voucher, what does HJ give you as an equivalent?

        • As the website says, you get a whopper junior for any beef burger.
Go check the website, it has a full list of conversions.

        • +1

@serrin: Lame. I don't like whopper Jrs. I think a big mac is worth more than that. Rather go to use it at maccas.

    • +16

Hungry Jack's are dancing very very close to what probably should be a legal boundary in which they are accepting the free food item tickets from a "competing quick-service restaurant" that has a promotion that sounds an awful lot like "McOpoly"

      • +19

Good too see that they're at least keeping the competition healthy! ;)

        • +46

          And keeping us unhealthy :P

      • +54

"Hungry Jack's are dancing very very close to what probably should be a legal boundary…"

I don't see any problem with it at all, legally. What offence could it possibly be construed as? It's certainly not defamatory… I can't remember exactly how the saying goes, but it's something like "emulation is the ultimate form of flattery".
Everyone loves a price-war… now a "freebie war" LOL… even better.

MACCAS: Are you going to TAKE THIS LYING DOWN?!? I think you'd better RETALIATE by ACCEPTING HJ "SHAKE-N-WIN" FREEBIES! Anything less would be PURE COWARDICE! It would be WEAK. And DEFEATEST! Now, GET TO IT!

        • -6

Agree with everything you've said. But what's "defeatest"? Do you mean defeatist?

        • +23

i'd be more interested in seeing a 'big' mac closer to the diameter of a HJ whopper

        • @Jar Jar Binks: Neck up mate

        • +1

          @Jar Jar Binks:

No point correcting spelling on OzBargain - once someone's replied they can't edit their post.

        • @Jar Jar Binks: This is when you are the most defeated you can get - eg "Destiny's review scores were about as defeatest as you can get for such a big game!"

I will accept the inclusion of this into the English language.

        • +1

          @Jar Jar Binks:

"Agree with everything you've said. But what's "defeatest"? Do you mean defeatist?"

It was a cricketing pun Rasta-man, I'm sorry it was lost on you.

        • @GnarlyKnuckles:

          Rasta-man.

I wish… but I am the son of a bald man.I live in constant fear that one I will wake up and my luscious locks will be gone ;-)

        • @Jar Jar Binks:

          "… luscious locks" ?

          Isn't that a Warwick Capper catch-cry?!?
Sheesh, man… no wonder the cricketing reference was lost on ya'… ;-P

      • What is a McOpoly? KFC 9 piece for $10 on Teusdays in hungry jacks?

      • -3

I am probably going to get a Neg for this. However people need to understand, this isn't really a deal. Hungry Jacks is basically promoting their competition here using ozbargain community as marketing channel.

        • No… A rep, from the company, who will recieve no benefit from sharing this with us, apart from our accolades, is listing it on here to help his fellow OzBargainers. The validity of this being a deal has been well and truely decided upon already with him recieving 192 positive votes thus far!

        • +1

          @Snoop:

Im the guy who did the big "how to get the best deal at HJ's post"…

I do this to help you guys out, I definitely don't get paid enough to do this as a marketing stunt.

        • Hey UnZud StormBoy, re:

"However people need to understand this …"

          I'm with Snoopers…

The peeps here don't "… need to understand" anything that you suggest they should…
We have spoken/clicked already; and besides, we decided we loved Sir McScotty and his endless selfless (informatively detailed) posts of awesomeness long ago, so… yeah. Rack off, man ;-P

      • +3

And last week I had to fill in a PayPal survey that I hadn't already done, then write up and send an email to them to get my free $5!

        • +2

whaaaaaaaaaaaaaa? u actually had to do stuff? Mind blown!

        • +2

          @scud70:
I did, but I was happy to do it… And I didn't complain that the listing wasn't really a deal as such, along with 2200+ other people!

        • +1

I also signed up on that site, what's this email you have to write? Was wondering when the money would come in.

        • I filled in that surevey too and am still waiting for my Voucher.

Did you get yours?? What / who did you email to follow up.

        • @DigitalJade:
Yes, kind of! Best to follow up with the comments on here!

      • +2

"Personally I don't think this is a bargain, as you'd have to buy something from McDonalds to have a chance at winning anyway, then go to HJ's instead to claim it. I think this is better off as a forum post."

Here's another way to look at it Cal-Zone:

The "full" title of this deal-section is "New Deals, Coupons, Vouchers and Freebies".

What this post is about, is a NEW DEAL available at Maccas, which may score you a COUPON/VOUCHER, which (now) entitles you to a FREEBIE at HJs. So surely it is not out of place in a section entitled "New Deals, Coupons, Vouchers and Freebies"?

        • +2

which may score you a COUPON/VOUCHER

With no guarantee that you will win anything in the McDonalds Monopoly competition (regardless where you claim the prize) it sounds like it belongs in the Competitions forum then rather than Deals.

Precisely the point cal89 was making.

  • +6

I don't have any FREE tickets* (from you know who)… But I love the idea of this promo!

    • +13

      Voldemort! There I said it!!

      • +6

I thought it was Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, B-b-b-b-b!
Sorry, can't say it. Just the thought of some guy dressed in a Collingwood suit coming to my house scares the $#!t out of me!

    • +2

Just grab them off discarded MCD packaging, swing by your local train station for a gold mine

      • +12

My local train station would be Frankston. Willing to trade your life for a fries?

        • Best comment I've seen in awhile :')

  • +3

    Cool marketing

    • +4

Agree.. Maccas from their scheme are gaining direct buyers - HJ are losing in terms that you have to buy from Maccas to be eligible for free thing from HJ - although they come out as cool and would benefit them indirectly.

  • +2

I saw this deal in store today. I was so confused and the chick wasn't much help. I guess they are not allowed to say it's Maccas so they don't get sued. Very vague instructions indeed.

  • +2

I'd trade all these Sport Session vouchers for a burger…

  • Translation please?

Real moto-grilled ladha, kama hewa, ni muhimu kwa maisha. Hakuna mtu lazima akakana - marafiki zetu, familia zetu na Waaustralia wote.

      • +7

        Thanks for clarifying, Super Snooper.

      • +9

Man, i'm in the mood for something "Moto-Grilled" now.

        • +2

          I recommend the ladha.

      • Is this THE Moto G I've been hearing about?

      • Why Swahili?

        • +6

Why not Swahili? is the real question here!
After all, it is spoken in over a dozen countries, unlike Mandarin in just a handful!

        • @Snoop:
Yeah. I dislike all citrus fruits except lemons ("lipstick" only, though), but I particularly hate mandarins.

    • +16

      HJs to McDonalds "1 V 1 fgt"

  • +49

Just for the awareness of people who may not understand this deal before it takes off, I'm just going to share my 2 cents as to why I've negged it.

    • The deal only applies to the Monopoly tickets from McDonalds, which themselves are a competition run by McDonalds where you may get a ticket that entitles you to a FREE menu item.
    • The tickets themselves aren't free, you need to buy food from McDonalds to earn them.
    • Hungry Jacks is simply allowing you to redeem them there instead, rather than at McDonalds.
    • We're not much better off, you still have to buy McDonalds to have a chance at winning, then go to Hungry Jacks and redeem, even though you could've redeemed it at McDonalds anyway.

This deal definitely isn't a freebie, in essence it's a competition, but now you have an alternative point of redemption. In fact, the original competition has already been posted in the competition forum.

The easiest way to explain this deal to those who don't understand is that imagine if Coles starting allowing you to redeem Woolworths gift vouchers in their stores. A select few might see a use in it, but for most of us you're not much better off…

I accept that I'll get negged for this comment, but hopefully it helps someone understand. That being said it's an excellent campaign from a marketing point of view, but it's not a bargain or a freebie.

    • +1

Thanks for explanation. This is really not a deal..

    • did you remove your neg?

      • +1

Nope, it was revoked because my earlier comment had too many negative votes, and I couldn't edit my post to reflect that I couldn't neg.

        • +3

          You can't beat the system.

    • "We're not much better off … you could've redeemed it at McDonalds anyway."

Geez man, who brought the Grinch?!?

If you prefer the food and/or service and/or the location of an HJ's is more convenient for you, or you want to "bundle" this with a shake-n-win freebie, then you are better off.
And all that other crap is just nitpicking!
This may not be the freebie of the century, but it's a FUN freebie. Cause it's EDGY.
      I love you, Hungry Jacks.

      • I'm sorry if you took it as grinchy, that's not my intention. I was just trying to help everyone understand that you'd have to purchase the food items at Maccas first which have a chance of producing a winning ticket which HJ's will then accept, but you could've redeemed them at Maccas anyway.

If HJ's were accepting any old voucher or freebie we can find online, then it's a different story, but it's only if you win the competition that it's useful. If you prefer the food/service/location of Hungry Jacks, you would have to still eat at Maccas first to even have a shot at winning…

Yes, we have more options and are better off, but I stand by the fact that we're not much better off.

        • +3

Firstly, I'm assuming that the majority on here are adults. Therefore capable of coming to an understanding that if you do not have said tickets, then you would have to acquire some! I'm also assuming that the people on here have an understanding of value, and would not rush out and purchase a product with merely the 'chance' of acquiring a valid ticket that would be transferrable to HJs. This being said, this promo would be more suitable to those that either; in their everyday travels should happen to acquire a valid ticket; or those that are already in possession of such tickets!

    • +2

You are definitely correct that this is not a usual bargain in the technical sense.

But I think generally when the community votes that something is a bargain, we should accept that it is, even if it technically doesn't fit the mould, unless there is some disadvantage to doing so (that's the point of the rules, after all).

I don't think there is any such disadvantage here. I don't think anyone will rush off to Hungry Jacks in confusion and then be let down because they misunderstood this deal. They'll either understand it immediately (already aware of the Maccas monopoly freebies) or read on and find out what's up.

    • +3

I agree. This is not a bargain at all. This is just a novelty promotion.

    • cal89 has said it all, this isn't a deal.

      • -3

        Agree with cal89 ,
Might be smart marketing but it isn't a bargain / or a deal since you actually have to buy the Maccas to get the "freebie".

  • -2

Can someone please decode this deal?

    • +1

I assume the tickets refer to Maccas' Monopoly promotion. So if you get "Free Fries" monopoly sticker then you can redeem that sticker at Hungry Jacks.

  • +12

    Frappe = $1 frozen coke… um

    • -1

ye but it was only $1 recently, compare that to their usual rate or Macca's standard rate, its still a great deal….anyway you can't complain, if you get that ticket, you can have a free Frappe, Smoothie, Frozen Coke or Soft Drink….so much choice!

  • +2

The burgers are better at Hungry Jack's… I'd rather pay for a HJ burger rather then chance a free burger from "you know who" and have to suffer (and pay) the crappy meal at "you know who".

Just my opinion though… smart idea though, make people think of you everytime they eat at the other place.

    • +1

i haven't had hungry jacks since i was 12 cos i found lots of hairs in it

      • +2

Don't think they've used rabbit for a long time now!

        • sadly i don't think it was rabbit, the hairs were short and curly, it looked awfully close to pubic hair.. tho it could have been normal hair..

        • @ilovepizza:
Hmmm, not quite sure what would make you love pizza so much after seeing this?

  • +5

It would have been better if the replacements were upsized. Otherwise it seems rather pointless.

    • +2

Stops people from going "I don't mind either HJ's or Maccas tonight, but I've got this freebie for Maccas, so Maccas it is!"

      • +1

It also breaks the cycle of getting the coupons that get you the freebies in the first place..

    • "It would have been better if the replacements were upsized."

Hmmm, not happy with HJs adding extra choices to the coupons aye, because the (entirely optional) choices they are adding are not "big enough" for you? … I guess there really is no pleasing some peeps…

      I will say this though:

It would have been "better" if HJs offered a free house on the Gold-Coast, with an SUV, and a boat, in exchange for a "free fries" voucher from Maccas. Though I've no doubt that even then, some "champ" would pipe up and complain, because they don't like SUVs…

      • If it was medium fries at HJ in exchange for the small fries Maccas voucher it would be a bargain. If you get more for something it is a bargain.

All the HJ exchanges are of equal or lower (some cases significantly lower) value than the original Maccas prize. If you only get the same or less value for something it is not really a bargain.

Being able to redeem coupons at HJ's might be more convenient for some, but paying more for a litre of milk at the petrol station compared to the supermarket price would not make that a bargain just because the petrol station is closer.

Some people might like HJ's more, still does not make this a bargain, they wouldn't likely have the coupons from shopping at Maccas to begin with anyway.

People get carried away and vote for the "idea" of the post rather than the true value of the deal.

There is a bit of a "stick it to McDonald's" sentiment here on ozbargain too, probably going back to when Maccas banned ozbargain from posting any of their deals.

        Take that McDonalds +vote
        Yay Hungry Jacks +vote
        Nice one McScotty +vote

Is it really a deal -vote

Hungry Jacks store owner also gives it a +vote for the publicity.

        • I just hope that this isn't a form of jealousy stemming from some sort of long term pent up frustration over your very first post that only received 6 votes, which just happens to be about… wait for it …HUNGRY JACKS!

        • +1

          @Snoop:
Not jealous, that was just a crap post of mine. I don't value my self worth by the plusses/minuses next to my posts anyway. If I did it would be easier to go with the mob than to post contrary to 98% of the voters on this thread.

I think people should be be able to post an opinion (as long as it isn't hurting anyone) without being negged away, belittled, insulted told to rack off or otherwise bullied.

My first post on this thread was in support of cal89 who was copping flack at the time for suggesting that since the only way to obtain the vouchers was to purchase something at Maccas giving you the chance to win something in their Monopoly competition this whole thing was better suited to the forums.

My second post in response to the suggestion that the comment from @ Aneurism: about it being pretty pointless since you are not trading up was as ridiculous as wanting HJs to offer "a free house on the Gold-Coast, with an SUV, and a boat".

It is easy to hide under a bridge and make nasty posts online, but it is the kind of behaviour that I feel the ozbargain community would be better off without.

  • +1

    Too edgy for me.

  • Yea, I don't really get the point of this. But at least they got balls to try it. I'd like to see Maccas go in for the kill and make a claim against HJs. Seriously, which other possible companies are there who offer such competitions? No need to be vague HJs, just say McDonalds. We all know it.

I am curious to know what the validation method is. I'd be pretty keen to pull in some 'second chance draw' type tickets and modify them.

  • +2

    the word Scotty is copyrighted……

  • +2

Seems like some shitty exchanges though. Any beef burger = whopper jr? I'm not familiar with what Maccas is offering, but if its an angus burger or a quarter pounder or something I'd expect at least a whopper as an equivalent. Same goes for the frappe/smoothies (hungry jacks offers smoothies iirc, so why a frozen coke?). The chicken burgers maccas offers are pretty great/high-end, so how is a chicken royale equivalent? The chicken royale is like the chicken & mayo burgers that maccas is selling..

Idk. I'd pick HJ's any day of the week over maccas, but part of this promo feel like it wasn't thought out well..

    • +2

… Or that they're trying to do it on the cheap since they don't the original revenue that McDonalds does.

      • +2

The point isnt about saving a dollar here, it is about converting McDonalds customers into Hungry Jacks customers

        • I agree, unless I really really want HJ, I wouldn't trade down my any beef/chicken burger (McFeast, McMate, McSpicy…etc.) to just a Whopper Jnr/Chicken Royale… Same with Frappe or Smoothie. As for the rest of the tickets, I don't mind going HJ if it's more convenient for me to go there.

  • great idea :)

  • +3

Just raid the bins/tables/floors at your local maccas for unpeeled tickets. No purchase required. :)

    • +13

or just eat the leftovers in the bins.

  • Pizza Hut has been doing it for years, accepting competitor coupons.

Unfortunately some of the prizes are worse off. I got a free chicken wrap from MacDonald.. taste a lot better than the HJ chicken royale, which is alot cheaper. But its cardboard thin chicken paddy was pretty much dry like cardboard. The paddy is about 1/2 as thick as the ones pictured in the promo.

Only the wording of the promo is good.

    • +1

      patty*

      • yes hahaha ^^ i have my quirks working on writing "a lot" as two words. alright??

      • 'to be sure it was Paddy!

  • +7

This could be only handy for Maccas staff who are sick of McDonald's food.

  • haha this is such a great idea! use Macca's marketing scheme for HJ's future gain….after a few free meals that is
