Firstly, apologies for not putting $AUD in the title, it's tricky with B&H due to the way shipping is calculated.

Qty, Price (+Shipping), Total [$AUD]

1 — $165 ($63) — $228
2 — $330 ($65) — $395
3 — $495 ($70) — $565
4 — $660 ($74) — $734
5 — $825 ($99) — $924

Delivered Unit Pricing as follows [$AUD]:

1 = $228
2 = $198
3 = $188
4 = $184
5 = $185

I've converted to $AUD myself, so I could be out slightly but its a guide. Cheapest I've seen in 5 months and probably the cheapest it will be for months to come.

Who is this deal suited for?
NAS owners. Despite not being the 'NAS' model, these are popular in NAS around the world.

(If you want just 1, the Amazon Touro deal works out cheaper)

  • 5400RPM
  • 32MB cache.

Highly regarded by many as the best non-enterprise drive. Goes well in NAS - Synology, QNAP, Neatgear etc.

Another option (thanks coxymla) is HGST Touro (external) drives on Amazon ($149USD):

2 — $340 ($29) — $369
3 — $510 ($40) — $550
4 — $680 ($50) — $730
5 — $840 ($62) — $902

Delivered Unit Pricing as follows [$AUD]:

1 = $184
2 = $184
3 = $183
4 = $183
5 = $180

  • IMHO this is the best drive you can get for your NAS - Quiet, low power consumption, quick and they have proved extremely reliable.

    • I agree! These are the drives I've been eyeing like a HAWK for the last 3+ months. Despite not being the "NAS" version, there are many happy owners using them in NAS (and the NAS version is 7200rpm which never interested me)

      I would have liked the prices to be lower, my trigger point was <$170USD but now I'm wondering if that'll happen anytime soon, maybe during Black Friday Sales? (End of November)…

      Haven't pulled the trigger yet, taking a little time to think this one over :)

      Really? I'm still not over the horror of the mid-to-late nineties in which Deskstar drives were so horribly horribly unreliable that they were universally known as 'Death Star' drives. The drivers are probably completely different, but the horror of the name lingers! I wonder who the bright spark was in marketing that thought it'd be a good idea to continue that name! :-)

      • +3

        I had 2 x 30GB RAID-0 Deathstars fail too, you gotta move on from the 90's dude :)

        Hitachi is now widely considered more reliable than Seagate & WD.

          When the post first went up, I was almost gonna facetiously comment "In before the obligatory Deathstar comments from the 90's"…kinda wish I had now! :P

        • The 90's were traumatic times in data storage, dude! I'm not quite ready to move on! :-)

        • @douglasb:

          I hear you, I still have a Quantum Fireball 3GB somewhere around here. Early 90's or late 80's? I forget.

        • +1

          your technological terrors are insignificant compared to the power of the force.

      • I had a 40GB Death Star back in the day, I was worried at time when I heard all the stories as they were expensive.

        I ended up running it for 8 years with no problems, I did update the firmware though.

  • Not sure if this is a bargain for a regular HDD. Unless something about this drive that I don't know.

    To me a bargain buy today for a regular HDD (SATA3, 32/64MB cache, but not NAS or Enterprise drives, just regular ones for archive/backup) would be when 4 cents (AU) or less per GB delivered (based on 1TB = 1000GB).

    For over 4 cents, you could get one from Warehouse1 for their regular price of $160 + shipping on any day. See http://www.warehouse1.com.au/epages/shop.sf/en_AU/?ObjectPat…

    What do you guys think?

      Hitachis are much better than Seagate/WD, at least on their normal drives. (ie. <= 4TB)
      Dunno about their crazy helium drives.

      • +1

        FYI HGST is a wholly owned subsidiary of WD.

        • WD haven't changed the design of the drives (yet) as far as anyone knows.

          Some of Toshiba's 7200RPM drives are also Hitachi's simply rebadged.

          These are nothing like WD drives.

      • +1

        ^ This. I will never use a WD green for storage again.

  • The external hard drives (Touro) on Amazon are the same price, so it's probably better to get them instead.

    • I didn't know about Touro's. Do they definitely use CoolSpins inside? If so, you may very well onto something!

      EDIT: Okay it appears they do! I'm getting excited now :)

    • For the price this is the better option. I did this almost a year ago with local stock at $197 (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/117724) per drive and have had no dramas with the drives running 24/7 since.

      Just keep in mind that you destroy the enclosures when you pull the drives out, so it will be hard to reuse the enclosures or return the drives to the enclosures.

  • Updated the OP to include Amazon's Touro prices (I didn't think it needed a separate deal but if you disagree, go for it)
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007K4HA0W/ref=ox_sc_sfl_ti…

    It's main appeal is for those wanting just 1 drive, much cheaper. As you purchase more the price comes back in line with B&H and probably not worth it considering the hassles involved using them internally.

    • Also need to factor in power adapter (US vs AUS), and assume it has 240V (if not stripping out the drive).

    Not a particularly good deal considering I picked up 2 times australian WD Red for $178 delivered each on the weekend.

    • Gotta love the self importance and the careful lack of info about who the deal is from..

      • well it was posted here at ozbargain…and i posted at the time so catch up https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/161267.

        It was a simple statement that it is very likely that a better deal can be had regularly than this.

        WD red now about $210-$225 just check ebay or staticice. or $160 for WD green

        Sure not external.. but i hate all the f.ing powerpacks.

        • -1

          Let me know when your WD drives start getting dropped from your array… then you may want those hitachi drives.

        • Each to their own.

          But I bet my WD red internal is more likely to survive than the HGST external running 24/7 for a few years.

          Since Hitachi is now owned by WD I doubt there are significant differences in failure rates. Although I am aware that Hitachi drives were more reliable (in a survey Hitachi had about a 1.5% failure rate compared to about 3% for WD). But that was based on drives a few years old. I expect the difference would be smaller now.

          I never use raid arrays, best way to lose data IMO in consumer environment. I use full copies with the backup drive powered down and disconnected. I have had a friend loose all their data with a trojan that deleted all their files and wiped space, this was across their home network on multiple machines. Whilst rare it does happen.

  • saw these down at 150 for ages months ago, but waiting for them to get as low as the seagates I just bought (119)… couldn't wait any longer for these - as I think it will still be many months,

    The Seagates still end up being ~35 bux cheaper each (150 landed), so that's 175 bux going the seagates, that's pretty 1 and a half drives extra…

    • Yeah I know what you mean. I originally wanted to spend $800 for 5 drives, or get 6 for change under $1000. Not going to happen yet.

      I think your comment of months is accurate, the only time they could get cheaper is the Black Friday sales - if that doesn't happen then it could possibly never happen this year. Frustrating… ~$930 for 5 drives will take care of my needs but the OzBargainer in me still wants better value.

      The only other drives I'd settle for is WD and then there is that LCC runaway issue to worry about (still being reported on some 4TB drives).

      …Buy these today or buy an external drive to keep me going until a better deal comes along, that's the dilemma.

      • There are utils to change the sleep timeout to avoid the LCC issues. No biggie.

        • That's the only reason WD are my second choice.

          The point is, that problem shouldn't happen on WD RED, yet it does. I don't see any reason to pay a premium for the RED (rebadged green) drive at the moment.

  • excellent drives for QNAP NAS. Been running these for a few months now 24x7 without a hitch. Was previously using the 3 TB version for close to 3 years 24x7 also without any problems.

    • How many and how much did you pay (4TB) if you don't my asking?

      • I also purchased four of these from bhphotovideo for my N40L.
        $189 each on 22/11/2012

      • +2

        This is OzBargain. He's not allowed to mind you asking! :-)

      • If you're interested in other data points (making your own NAS or RAID I assume), I purchased:

        5x 4TB Touro 5400rpm externals from Amazon for $175 each, US$$946.78 total, on 5/8/13

        5x 4TB Touro Pro 7200rpm extrnals from B&H for (4x $170 + 1x $190), US$1,014.41 total, on 5/20/13

        • Thanks, I have a Synology 1813+ and 1511+ both empty, I have drives for the 1511+ ready to go in but currently in use so I just have to populate the 1813+ first.

  • Poop, after waiting and waiting for this drive to be on sale again, I pulled the trigger instead on the Seagate NAS drives that were posted last week.

    Got 2x Seagate NAS HDD 4TB SATA 6GB NCQ 64 MB Cache Bare Drive ST4000VN000 for $333.46 US shipped.

    I've emailed B&H to ask if $149 is a sales price or their new standard price, since it doesn't mention the usual "Save $xxx" like they usually do…

    If this is the new standard price they could indicate further price cuts later, if it is indeed a sale then prices will eventually go back up.

    When I get a response I'll report back.

    • This reply :

      That drive, B&H number HGHDIS34, is currently $149.00. This is not a promotional price. Please note that prices can, and do change on a regular basis.

  • how does the warranty for those drives work? do you send back to B&H?

    • Good question, I'm not quite sure and since this deal is largely dead now you'll unlikely get an answer now so I've started a thread for you asking that question:

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/162176

      I'm about to order 4 of these when ordering comes back online (17hrs…)

      I wanted 5 but I also had a budget of $800. Can get 5 x WD/Seagates for that price but not Hitachi, so I'll drop 1 and get 4 now, then another 4 at a later date :)
