Penrite Enviro+ 5W-30 Full Synthetic VW 504.00/507.00 Approved Oil $60 5L Repco

50

Not too bad a deal if you need VW 504.00/507.00 approved oil for your VAG (Audi, VW, Skoda)

VW 504.00/507.00 approved oil is certainly getting expensive these days. At $60 for 5L, it's about half what the dealer will charge you, so buy a bottle and give it to the dealer at the next service.

My Mk5 Golf GTI is now burning quite a bit of 5W30 oil, so I'm thinking of trying a slightly heavily oil in the Penrite 5W40

  • How does this compare to the Castrol Edge 5W-30 ?

The Australian product is not 504.00/507.00, it is still VAG approved but to a lower spec.

      • Correct, from memory it is 502/505 approved, which is the older spec. Doesn't mean it's not a good oil, but I wouldn't use it if you drive a VAG diesel.

    • The Castrol Edge 5W-30 is a good oil too, but not VW 504.00/507.00 approved.

This is important if you drive a diesel, or have long service intervals (I believe 15k is long).

Castrol make a 5W30 VW 504.00/507.00 approved oil, but not sure if they sell it to the public in Australia. All VW dealers I know of use Castrol EDGE Professional Longlife III 5W-30 which you can only buy from the dealer.

If you're not driving a diesel or changing oils every more frequently than 15k, then the cheaper Castrol Edge 5W-30 is fine.

In fact, I bought 4 bottles of Castrol Edge 5W-30 for my BMW which I service myself.

Good deal - SCA also has Shell helix ultra with same specs for $57

I personally prefer the Shell product, but there's no specific reason behind it.

    • +1

I've used both (paid $50 for the Helix Ultra it ages ago) and both are equally as good being VW 504.00/507.00 approved, however I prefer to use Penrite as they are Australian and make very good oils VW approved or not.

Unfortunately the Penrite doesn't have the official Ferrari logo Helix Ultra does! haha

  • JB1,
Do you know how long can we store the oil if say we bought some during the sale to stock up?
Some oil like the Shell has the production date, but Castrol and Valvoline don't have this on the bottle.

    Thanks!

I think there is a consensus that if it's unopened it should last a few years.

I wouldn't recommend 5 years plus, but a couple of years should be fine.

Good thing is there are sales every year, so no need to stock up for the next 5 oil changes, although I tend to stock up as my car goes through nearly 5L between services.

      • sheesh - what do you drive? I thought my car going through ~1-1.5L between services was bad

        • As per my first post- Mk5 Golf GTI.

Yeah first car that needed topping up.

Apparently very common with the new Direct Injection engines. They burn oil from new, but doesn't improve with Age.

I remember reading some Porsche Engines use 1L per 1,000km, and that is considered normal and not a warranty job.

Up to 5 years, but best if stored indoors where temperature is more stable and not at hot/cold extremes. Best if left unopened.

If stored for a long time (5 years+) , use a long object to scrap bottom to check if any sludge at bottom to judge if its good or not. Shake bottle and pour a bit into a clear plastic cup, leave over night. If it seperates into layers or settles at bottom starting to sludge then = no good.

Lube approved for VAG use. Get your minds out of the gutter!

VAG requires good lube especially if you want to go the distant.
