Hi Guys, after all the Webers that were bought last weekend, I've been doing some research on BBQ forums and essentially to make the most of your new BBQ, a thermometer is required.

Most of the BBQs bought weren't specialist models and don't have a thermometer on top. I've done extensive research and have come upon the Maverick Et 732.

As far as I know this may just be the regular price in amazon, but it is by far the cheapest I could find. Interestingly, when I had it in my cart just a few days ago, shipping was over 30Usd. It has now dropped to below 10usd. (The 2nd cheapest one I could find is >100AUD)

If this is better suited for forums happy for this to be moved/deleted. I feel that enough people would want to see it on the front page though.
If someone finds a better price please Neg, make my loss everyone's gain!

Maverick ET-732

  • Range on these in reality is not that great, loses signal quite often even when only a short distance away ..

That said its far more useful than the Weber branded one I got local.

You've got a dud (or the cheaper ET-73 which has a much shorter range)! Mine works fine through a couple of brick walls and a reinforced concrete floor.

I have to disagree. One of the best wireless thermometers I have ever brought. Mine has not lost signal once and can still read 3+ houses over while cooking in my garage. I've had mine a few years and use it often as I use my weber q to make cakes and desserts just like an oven. Also use it for roasts and it had never missed a beat. Put a probe on the grill and one in the meat, set the meat probe alarm for the cooked temp I want, clip to my belt then it's set and forget till the alarm goes off and you have a perfectly cooked roast. I have even walked to the end of my street playing with my kids and still get a signal. I have even brought a few for family members as they have been impressed with how well they function compared to the cheapies from bunnings.
For anyone with a Weber Q the 3 must buy accessories are a roasting Trivet and wireless Maverick Thermometer, and a medium sized foam esky.
A little trick, under cook your roast by 5 degrees wrap in foil then a towel and place inside the esky for 30 minutes. I sometimes do up to an hour in the esky. The meats internal temp will continue to cook itself and raise 10 degrees. After allowing the meat to rest for 30 minutes you will have the juiciest most tender roast you have ever tasted. After doing this trick you will never cook a roast without it. Even works for steak.

      • The range on mine is about 10 meters through 1 brick wall. Not bad but the constant beeping as soon as it loses signal is pretty annoying.

        • Well I just did a test and got 5 houses down my street before it lost signal and it still had the original batteries that I put in when I first received the unit around 2.5 years ago. Maybe you have a faulty aerial or interference? But from my experience these are excellent units

        • There is another model advertised as long range, 733 from memory.. If I ever need another I will get that.

I just leave my one in range… For low and slow cooks it's invaluable..

        • @Pobman:

732 and 733 have the same range. General consensus is that the 733 isn't worth the extra $$$ although I'd almost be tempted just for the ability to change target temps up and down instead going (almost) full circle just to go down 5°

I love mine, much better than the previous one I picked up from Bunnings. Works beautifully.

Never had an issue with the signal dropping. Having said that, I've never had the need to test it from 100 metres away.

  • It's reassuring that fellow ozbargainers have had good experience with these too! Did any of you get it for cheaper than what I posted by any chance?

    • It's been a while so cannot remember exactly but from america I think I paid $120 - $150ish a few years ago

    • It was about $2 cheaper in March delivered.. So not really.

Good others have better ranges… It's no worse a range than my weber was… Perhaps we have superman proof lead walls…

  • Hopefully this will still be this price tonight. Unfortunately this Weber is costing me more than the $450 outlay. :-/

    • Get a Kamado to go next to your Weber next :)

      • What is that?

        • A type of bbq… Can go very hot, or low and slow.

  • Increasing the Range of a Wireless BBQ Thermometer (rev 2)

  • Thinking to get one like these !!!! I know its for oven but why we can't use in weber where meat is cooked only when lid is closed??
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/CDN-High-Heat-Oven-Thermometer-/2…

    • that only shows oven temp not if the meat is cooked yet, the thermometer in this deal is more for slow cooking bbq/smokers

that being said tho, you should always ALWAYS cook your meat/roast to an internal temperature so you know its cooked through but not overcooked so you get the best results every time.

i did use one of these for many years

      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Wiltshire-Classic-Meat-Thermomete…

they do work well but you have to open the BBQ to check it and as the old bbq saying goes "if your lookin it aint a cookin" which is where these wireless ones are perfect. set your BBQ/oven and forget about it till the thermometer beeps at you

      hth

    • Sure it's wireless but the range ain't so good.

Fairly expensive for what you're getting and getting close to half the price of something decent.

  • -3

The one at bunnings is only $30-40

    • if you talking about this one it dosnt even compare to this deal.

the biggest difference is if the gasmate loses communication with the transmitter it just continues to show you the last known temp, which dosnt sound bad, until an hour or 2 later it finally reconnects again (or you finally go out to see how its going) and find out that you have a leathery, overcooked lump of charcoal sitting where your lovely and expensive cut of meat used to be

gasmate you also cant change the target temps which is also good when your doing speciality bbq/smoking etc

the gasmate is also only single probe which means you would need a second one to know wirelessly what your bbq temp is which if your using a charcoal bbq/smoker.. specially if your "low and slow" smoking… is almost indispensable
