I have never completely understood the high cost for this considering it's free on something like TiVo.

    • Tivo was between 50% to 100% more expensive than other PVRs due to having the subscription built in to the price.

Check the recent comments in the link below by Dan from Tivo / Hybrid and Paul55 regarding the cost of providing a useful EPG:

      • I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who's certainly made their money back by having it for so many years now! The original idea was that it also included things like online games, weather, youtube, etc. which would've added to its worth at the time. And although these things now seem pretty ordinary and/or were deleted from the firmware, the ability to stream to it was fantastic in the early days!
Ps. I must also add that I've had very few issues over the years. The FTA guides seem to be pretty good nowadays!

    • Due to the high price of the TIVO units and the EPG and scheduling as part of the package, eventually they went out of business. Ice TV works for a number of different recorders, in particular the Humax which seems to integrate perfectly with IceTV

I don't even know what it is, ignorance is bliss

  • Imagine how great it would be if a company like IceTV had subcontractors in each TV region accurately 'live-flagging' start/stop times for programming and ad-breaks. Problem is, I'm pretty sure that it has been tried before and the whomever was doing it was beaten in court by the TV networks.

use an adblocker on their online streams?

  • Anyone know if this will work with the Humax lifetime subscription?

    • Looks like it doesn't work for the lifetime subscriptions

      • Thanks for that.

  • A year ago I would have been all over this, especially that 4 year deal, icetv is an amazing epg source, if normally overpriced. However with a "catch up" streaming service for most channels now, and Netflix, Hulu, etc also (legally, if in a grey area) available in Aus there's really no need for a pvr any more, mine is happily recording stuff which I have previously programmed but we never watch it with all the other sources available. My icetv sub ends later this year and I'll probably never renew it again.

  • IceTV is a pretty good service and I can understand it's appeal to some people. In my opinion though the freeview guide over the air is more accurate for time but perhaps slightly less accurate at tagging things as being new/rerun. I found IceTV (2 years ago) to be pretty inaccurate for timing of programs.

    • The Ice guide (and the Tivo guide) are hopeless for repeat flags lately. Given that the FTA guide is consistently more accurate for times and that a number of PVRs can now do 'series links', that renders the Ice guide a little useless.

      Good for complete newbies maybe?

      • Never really had a problem with TiVo season pass set up on first run only, except on shows like The Block, etc. where they have the exact same title and description repeated for different episodes.

      • Actually, the FTA guide is near useless for flagging repeats, only ABC and SBS to it with some form of consistence according to Toppfield T3 owners. This new PVR was not ICE compatible at launch and still wont be for a little while longer. It does offer a season pass style recording, but the problems owners have is that repeats are so poorly labelled.
One thing that drove me nuts with non ICE recorders was that the FTA channels would alter the name slightly for some program, especially special events, and it would not be picked up. As ICE data is all done manually, they know to add these special events to be tagged correctly so they get recorded.
I record next to nothing these days, but I still record a few things such as F1, which was one thing that could get renamed bizarrely and not get recorded. With ICE, I set it to record every new broadcast a few years ago and haven't had to think about it since.
I was thinking about turning ICE off on my PVR for a week or so and try the FTA EPG, but then thought about having to set timers again based on the EPG being broadcasted.
Is the FTA EPG still only 7 days? This drove me nuts when I would go away for over a week.

  • Selling before hbbtv becomes a norm

  • I like the control a pc tuner card affords; and flexibility the vpn.net for everything non local & I saw such subscriptions obsolete years ago.

Wow, amazed at what people will pay for in this country. Consider they are charging you for a lousy guide at the same rate Netflix provides the actual real content (normal rate for both). Wake up Australia, stop accepting being ripped off.

    • If you think it is just a guide, your missing a lot of info.
