Got a feeling this might get OzB'd

Your feeling was correct! I was working late last night, it was crazy to see how fast all the signups flooded in over the first few hours.

      • Nooooooooo I can't believe I missed this! I would have loved to try some.

        • Me to, this actually sounds quite interesting and fun!

Favs are lawn mower handle, burlesque costume and table saw runner. Great stuff.

Getting a spare pack for emergencies and travelling for when stuff breaks or creating MacGyverish crap when away is a good use of this stuff.

Some other types out there but forget their names right now.

    Great post MM, thanks.

    Hmm, a Sugru alternative?
    They've run out anyway.

    UPDATE
    Wow, what an amazing response!
Unfortunately we have run out of Plastimake Sample Packs.
However, please sign up below and you'll be top of the list next time we run the Plastimake Photo Pledge.
Thanks to everyone who signed up before 2AM Friday September 5, you'll receive your Plastimake next week!

    • Missed by 2 minutes :-(

Are they out of 20g sample packs, or are they out of Plastimake Australia wide?

      • We've run out of the 20g Sample Packs, but the rest of the products are still in stock.

Differences seem to be heat tolerance and flexibility? Never used either so I don't know how flexible sugru really is. But only $10 to try some of this stuff out, so tempting… Damn you OzBargain, you're supposed to save me money!

      • +1

Sugru is really handy stuff, we use it all the time! However it's quite different to Plastimake. Sugru is rubbery, single-use, sticks to most things, cures in 24 hours and is heat resistant. Plastimake is super-strong, reusable, fast, non-toxic and biodegradable, but is not heat resistant.

You should probably pick up a $10 pack so you can see for yourself :)

PlastimakePete, what happens once you add colour pellets to the clear Plastimake? I guess once you melt it back down after use, it has to remain that colour (unless you add other colour pellets to change the colour), is that right? You can't remove those colour pellets to get back to the original transparent Plastimake, correct?

So if you've created a figurine, for instance, using various colours… when you melt it back down, do all those colours just blend into one mixed, uniform colour?

Probably an immensely stupid question on my behalf lol but figured I'd ask in case such magic can happen.

        • @waterlogged turnip:

Not stupid at all. I'd be quite interested to find this out too.

My guess; if you melted the entire thing down the colours would start to run and blend in with each other… but, perhaps if you could break or cut off the bits and melted them each individually you'd get melted plastic bits of just those colours.

        • @waterlogged turnip: You're absolutely right, once you've mixed the colouring pellets into Plastimake it's not possible to extract the colours and return it to the standard white colour.

However, if you add more colouring pellets you can make it… browner. And if you add some black pellets you can override the original colour and make it black.

I hope that helps, let me know if you have any more questions!

        • @PlastimakePete: Thanks for the quick response! :) Yes that answers my question perfectly. Good idea about the ability to just turn any melted-down mixed-colours into solid black (which you'd invariably use at some point anyway).

          Awesome stuff.

    Ozbargained.

    • Knew it! Just one of those obviously clever products everyone can use. Hopefully 20gms is useful.

      • 20g is enough to make any of the items in the photo above. Also, because Plastimake is 100% reusable you can make something, melt it down, then make something else!

Missed out on the freebie, but damn that stuff looks fun.

    Seriously considering buying it.

  • Thanks op : )

I'm very happy to find out about this product! I used to buy a similar product at Jaycar but it was expensive to buy in large volumes and only came in white, so I didn't use it much. However a kilo of the stuff for $40 from the Plastimake website, plus the ability to colour it for an extra $15, will make it a worthy addition to my repairs kit! I'm already thinking of using it to repair a few trim pieces on my car, and it should be very easy to mould a replacement for my misshapen leaky washer bottle cap.

I missed out on the freebie, but the website alone with all the examples and instructions is a bonus on its own. Thanks monty.melb!

If you check out their eBay store, the $40 1kg pack comes wtih a free colouring kit!

Samples have long gone, but it's a pretty cool product that we didn't know about.

    Thanks. :)

Looks same as Polymorph except you can buy it in much bigger quantities: http://www.altronics.com.au/p/h6800-moulding-plastic-reuseab… I have used it and it is good if you can think of a use for it. Not sure if it is mentioned anywhere but it is re-usable by simply putting in hot water again.
