Just bought a Evo 840 150GB yesterday for $150 because no SSD deals had been on OZB for a week.

    Why today!

    • +5

Patience is a virtue bro =)

    • +5

      Why didn't you use the

      "Wayforward Machine - Internet Previewer"

to see what was going to be posted on Ozbargain today ?

    • +8

Wtf?! A 150GB SSD should be like $90.

      • +1

        250gb i mean. My bad.

    • +1

You can't go wrong with the Samsung. Relax.

  • Good deal OP.
    Thanks for posting.

  • For reliability eg server use would the Evo still be better ?

    • +1

Some brands are "better" than others, but if you want reliability for a server you should look into mirrored RAID and ZFS for redundancy.
Even the best brands will have a DOA or early death!

      • +1

Just expanding on Mergatroid's statement, Intel do sell server/enterprise SSD's in the form of the S3500 and S3700 series. They have large capacitors to flush data during a power failure, use more provisioning amongst other things, enterprise level firmware etc.

If the server is a home server, and cost is a factor, single drive with a backup somewhere in the mix might be considered a good compromise. If its a home server and the cost is not too prohibitive, as suggested, mirror RAID is good solution.

If server is critical then you might look with a raid array using 3 or move drives and then higher class SSD's.

I would shy away from using an EVO because its not the target market its designed for, and the PRO series of samsung's SSD drives are probably a better more compatible fit and would cause less stress in the long time.

All of the above technobabble mentioned, they are a damn good price

  • cheaper deals are on amazon for samsungs and crucial ssds

    • +1

The EVO 840 does look pretty good! But local stock blah blah blah.

      • +5

It doesn't really matter how they look, unless you have a see-through PC chassis…

        • +3

Just because SSD's aren't your fetish jv <strokes computer case>…don't judge me! ;)

  • Nice deal! Have been waiting for something like this to come along

    Thanks OP

With the new Sandkisk TLC NAND SSD's releasing and the R7 AMD SSD's announced, prices are set to drop even further in the near future.

Which sucks because I want one now!

    • +2

      How far away is this?

And are these going to be any better or just add competition in the market?

Because I need one in about a month but am ready to jump onto the EVO 840 deal today at that price?

Really need some feedback on this please?

      • +2

With tech, there will always be something faster or cheaper in the future. You just have to get the best deal at this moment.
You probably won't notice the speed difference (unless you have the latest motherboard/hardware) in normal operation as SSD's are already pretty quick.
So grab the EVO if you can wait 2 weeks (from USA) or grab one of these otherwise!

      • +2

Sandisk Ultra II will be released in sep, and probably in europe and the states first.

The R7 I'm not sure, they won't be as cheap anyways. There has never been a better time to buy so I guess waiting is up to you. I'm holding out for a 960GB drive, but that's because I'm an idiot.

But I think it's safe to say we will see many more price drops towards the end of the year as competition heats up.

As to the differences between the drives, there is very little, the Sandisk TLC drives will be slightly faster, but as Mergatroid said, real world it won't really be noticable, it's going to be the price that makes them more attractive. (Personally I trust Samsung more though and would stick with the 840)

        • +1

          Thanks for the feedback!

Helps a lot from the practical side, but it's all about price, being new to SSD from what I have seen the 500GB Samsung EVO's are worth about $270 so could we see a $50 drop in the next month?

And for anyone knows if there are any warranty issues from buying from the US or just the risk of the kind of damage the SSD would receive in transit to Australia if it's worth the $50 save?

And finally the EVO 840 vs the 840 Pro 840 Pro Series?

quite a price difference but what is the difference?

        • +1

          @yacman:

The 500GB EVO drives were going for $222 this morning :) (Sold out)

The Pros have longer life, but for the average consumer, there is no real benefit unless you do a lot of constant read/writes (Typically video editing and the like)

        • @Hivetyrant:
Thanks for the reply, waited too long for it unfortunately and the item is sold out, diffidently sounds like an EVO is good enough, just do Uni and Gaming.

I'm assuming the longer life is relative to the larger amount of read/write you do which as a video editor is greater than my needs?

Shipping Kills It, but still a good price

    • +2

      Its free shipping :S

    • Free shipping!
Has anyone got the free shipping with their order?

      • $14 shipping on mine :-(

        • If you add it to your cart it removes the shipping!

    5 year warranty too!! :O

  • Has anyone tried installing an SSD in a later model (skinny) iMac?
Thinking about an upgrade but the videos I've seen online are a little scary.

    • +1

      Hey,

I have seen a few issues with the Marvell controller used on the Extreme II's and some Macbooks.

  • I'm looking to install an SSD to my Asus vivobook laptop… I only really need 120GB though. Any deals on smaller drives?

    • +3

      go for the bigger drive

    • You might need a smaller drive, but you'd want the bigger drive ;) The performance difference between most 128gb drives vs 256gb drives is quite large, making it not just about $/gb. Then again it is more - suggest looking at the samsung evo, going quite cheap these days

    • Centrecom, intel 520 120 gb, i think it is still $75

  • Perfect.
My old Patriot Torqx is starting to die to time to upgrade

  • not available any more? showing $170 on the website for 240GB.

    • ah never mind.. i didn't follow the links and just searched.

  • bought one last time the deal was on for same price. installed W8.1 and its going strong - no problems with it.

  • Grabbed a 240gb, had trouble getting free shipping.
Don't enter your postcode when checking out.

Wish there wasn't a surcharge on credit cards.

  • Bought one, thanks.

  • just brought one, thx :)

Brilliant drive - bought the 240gb from the states earlier this year for $169USD. Normally rated as the 2nd best performance drive on the market from the last gen of SSDs (not this gen's 3D nand), only dropping a very small bit behind the samsung evo pro (but this is much cheaper). And the best part is it doesnt suffer from a drop in performance when reaching a full capacity - so it has the best consistency on the market! Might wait a few more months for cheaper as i don't need it just yet, but good deal nonetheless.

  • I bought this from the last deal they had ( same price) my 1st SSD ever I will never go back only issue with these guys is they charge extra to go through Paypal which from what I have read on Paypal site they shouldn't be doing.

    • 1.5% for paypal
      5% for amex.

Go through paypal using your Amex :)

  • Crap, 240 or 480?

    • If you scroll down through the features tab on the product page, the 480GB version appears to have a read and write speed that's marginally slower 5-10MB/s less compared to the 240 version. Probably doesn't mean much if you value additional space more than the slight difference in speed.

  • I just got one about 3 weeks ago when scorptec had them on a special for the same price… Must not buy more…

  • +1

Thanks for the deal. Laptop hdd died yesterday. Perfect deal timing!!

  • Heard a lot about SSD, but can anyone advise me where you guys install your apps & games (that takes a lot of space) when SSD capacity is about 120GB or 240GB.

      1. Another SSD
      2. Another HDD

Most apps can be installed into another drive.
For the case when it is not possible you can always install into default drive, move it into another drive and create link in the original location (Win 7 file system got symbolic links).

  • Is there anywhere in Sydney that will price-match this?

I'd rather buy from a local store in case I need to make a warranty claim.

  • Has this worked for anyone? Like, have you rocked up to scorptec and asked?
Couldn't find any information about this on their website and would've mind buying one at this price.

  • My experience of Scorptec for this deal was that they took from Thursday morning to Monday afternoon to actually ship out the drive and then sent it Aus Post instead of Australian Air Express as they had claimed.

    • At least yours was shipped mines still status 'TO BE DISPATCHED'

      • To be fair I did bay BPAY which probably takes a few days to process

  • Has anyone actually received their item yet in Sydney?

AusPost says it was recieved on Friday but still no delivery.
I would have thought Tuesday or Wednesday at the latest

  • Still waiting.

    Very disappointing delivery.
I direct deposited, NAB to NAB… which is instant.

  • I bought one a few weeks ago from scorptec. I must be quite unlucky as it died within 3 weeks in my macbook. Was pretty gutted. Luckily i did not scrub my old drive.

  • I will never buy SanDisk, always have problems
