  • this is gonna ruin all my plans if this doesn't come with micro usb charging :p probs have to return it now…

    • To charge the device, connect the device to any USB power supply
      from the manual

      • +1

It can't be charged with the USB connection, only by DC.

        • +1

Thats correct, Separate charger and USB cable.

  • Found the manual online for this tab: http://www.dgtec.com.au/LiteratureRetrieve.aspx?ID=4481

Looks like my tablet is being delivered today! Seems quite fast for DS!

    • Mine was delivered today and Box not sealed! Again!!! Has any of the ones that have been delivered sealed??

      • both of my boxes werent sealed

      • NOT Sealed.

      • +1

Looks like my screen wrap has been taken off and placed back on. The charger cord looks like it's been unravel and done back up too :S

  • +2

ordered 2 and got them today, both pink colour. Didnt say anything about a colour on the ebay site and had a black one as picture

    • Mine's pink too, yikes. >_<

    • Lucky, Got Black, would have preferred White, but no complaints. Yet to turn it on.

    • +1

      Mine's small & white.

    • Got mine yesterday. Both pink. :(

  • looks like ill be painting mine

    • +1

or buy some cheap carbon-fibre look sticker to cover its ass…

  • Mine is on the way, delivered by today. Is it a shxtty pink colour for all fellows've received?!

  • +1

Mine too is hot pink… I sense some passive-aggressive motives in this.

  • +2

    Why is it PINK?!!!

    • +3

Dick gives support to Breast Cancer Foundation?

      • +1

If they told me beforehand I would've given $35 to the charity rather than buying the pink version.

        • +2

          That's very generous:)

  • +1

    Pink here too :)

  • +2

Talk about misleading! The photo is black and I get PINK! :( Real men don't use pink tablets LOL

  • +2

    mine is white :)

  • +2

    I got White.
Would have preferred Black like what was advertised but I guess it's better than pink so I shouldn't complain. :)
Nice little tablet. Used it for 10 mins, a lot better than expected.
    Definitely worth the $35.

  • Cannot get passed the DGTEC loading screen…Already used reset button several times, always gets stuck loading

Plugged charger in, tablet stayed blank (no charging animation)

Is anyone able to check if the specs match the description?

    • Same issue here, I got two, one is OK but one wont charge

    • I've charged mine for 2 hours with a blank screen. It's a bit warm but it's not turning on. Should I bring it to a Dick Smith store to get it repaired/replaced?

  • doh… i get the droid with a red exclamation… it trys to start installing but its corrupt ( i think)

looks like it needs a firmware update if you get the red exclamation = need a silly sdcard :(

    this is a re-branded ONIX

    http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2060407

  • Missed the delivery because i was at work. :( Why don't they just leave it at the local post office for it to be picked up on that day instead of re-delivering to that post office at a later date.

    • Have you looked into Auspost Parcel locker/Parcel collect? Might be easier if you work in the city or something.

    • Living in the country rocks (just moved here recently)

The other day I had a red card in the letterbox and I'm expecting it to say the usual "pick it up at the post office" - this one said "pick up your package around the side of the house" lol.

A previous time the courier called me and asked if I minded if he left my package behind the bin at the side of the house.

  • Checked out comments about the Aldi Onix version here: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2018478
Seems quality was very hit or miss. Best thing about the Onix is that Aldi has a 60 day return policy.
If it doesn't work, send it back.. and complain on DS's facebook page.

For anyone interested in protecting their $35 investment, I found the following…

    • I got a white one, they didn't say it comes in random colour! Also, mine has a few minor scratches. The box was unsealed. At first I thought they were dusts under the screen but when I ran my finger nail across it you can tell they are in fact scratches :(

      • My charger was out of its packet & cable was roughly repacked. Manual had been read, by the look of it. But works well - especially for the price.

      • Mine was white too. Though for my kid so I don't care.

Did yours come with the plastic protective stuff stuck to it? Mine still has that stuff on, all I've done is charge it and play with it for 10 seconds, I haven't noticed scratches but I'll have a closer look now…

Unsure if my box was sealed as my wife opened it up but I'll ask her.

        Scratches are unacceptable!

        • I received a white one, which is ok as it is for my folks (android noobs).
The box wasnt sealed, but it still had the screen plastic on the tablet.
When i loaded up the internet, the home page was yahoo.com.au?
Has anybody else noticed a considerable lag? And if so, how to fix it?

  • +4

Just do a PayPal dispute of 'product not as described'. DS might just give you your money back so save the muck around of returning a clearance item.

    • -1

Why the vote down? Giving advice on how people who have been deceived can get their rightful refund.

      • I would tend to agree with you, have a + from me too!

Bit of a dick move by Dick there, I'll be chasing it up myself…might even just dispute immediately, just to be a…well, dick! ;)

  • there is a flash i tried to install the image but its corrupt update.img :( fudge…maybe i need to "burn it onto a sdcard" instead of trying to install the .iso from the sdcard as a "file"

    paypal dispute shortly lol

  • +1

Mine arrived today, black tablet, didn't realise there were alternative colours. I purchased this for my 2 year old and am really happy with it for the price. The size and weight is perfect. It's back up to $99 on the Dick Smith store.

  • +1

Received today. PINK colour, look like toy :)

  • +1

Anyone interested in pink colour, want to swap with their white or black???
    Ardeer VIC 3022

  • Received white one. Now installing Apps with free WiFi at free office (& good free coffee etc) from OzBargain deal.

Moving Apps onto $9 32GB micro-SD - from another deal. However, most times shows error that "Couldn't move app" to tf card. But when I try again, moves OK. So don't worry about that message :-)

Android: ICS 4.0.4 not JB 4.1

    • Deceptive advertising!!

  • +2

Well done STARTRACK! I've been waiting for the delivery all day, got a text message 15 minutes before the post office closed…said no one at home pickup the item, WTF!

Got mine when the post office was closing, a HOT PINK one…no luck.

    • This happened to me today too. I checked my mailbox around 5pm and saw the startrack note and said the driver came around 2pm and I was home all day nobody came around. I've never had anything delivered from startrack, is this the usual?

      • He even didn't leave a card…

        • Sounds like the service I usually get from Toll. :/

    • +2

Hehe I got a txt hours after he'd already delivered mine.

HOT PINK ?! That's not cool. I thought white was bad… wow

      • +1

Yeah, it's a particularly gauche pink too, as someone else noted a very Barbie-esque toy colour…very poor form.

  • +2

Woo Hoo! I'm glad it's white! Although black would have been fine too, I'm not racist.

  • +2

So got black. Box unsealed, charger loose. Tablet is in protective plastic though. I charged it for 2 hours and then turned it on. Its not JB only ICS.

First impressions: The resolution is ghastly, fonts not crisp. How its quite fast/snappy. I started YouTube and played some videos and its acceptable.

Verdict: $35 delivered, its value for money. At this price point it has many uses: Perfect tablet for kids and youtube. Connect to old non-hdmi amp to make it a wireless speaker with the dc plugged in from the amp. Use it as an xbmc remote for HTPC. Catching up on news and the odd youtube vidoes. Perfectly acceptable. Am happy I purchased this minutes before the deal expired.

  • Has anyone been able to find a working rooting method or at least some ADB usb drivers that work?

  • Any ideas for disguising the ghastly pink? Are there any covers, skins, etc?

  • Just picked mine up nothing was out of its box, packaging was good. Any idea if I can swap a pink one with another colour?

  • Received in unsealed box but looks new. Charger in plastic but other cable had tie. Played with it this morning. Will pass it on to 4year old for birthday in a few weeks. Good for teaching patience. Some apps wont work on it. Haven't been able to get a torch light to work nor bar code scanner either. Tried the camera indoors -useless. No GPS or Bluetooth and so slow (is that referred to as lag). Was going to use as book reader but screen not conducive and battery drains too quickly. A good present though for children who are not familiar with Ipad or good quality tablet etc., Thanks to post above I'll try the KMart cheapie and if no good it can be another present. I just need to get my books off my Galaxy Note phone and free up some space. Might have to use cloud.

  • Got mine, looks good for use as a DayFrame photo frame. Does anyone know how to install apps on the 'Nand Flash' part of the internal storage ? My apps are failing to update as there is not enough room on the 512mb internal storage..

    • Got both delivered yesterday. Lucky mine were white.

I have been playing with it since morning… So far I have updated all the preinstalled apps on it and downloaded a couple of apps. It freezes a lot and I can't install any more because apparently it doesn't have sufficient memory. I thought it had 16 GB storage, now when I look at it the 16 storage is called tft card … Acts like an external storage. Downloaded app manager to move the apps but there's nothing I can move

Basically, the only way around this is to root the device, then you can remove unwanted pre-installed apps to free up some space. Others with a lot more experience than I could repartition the internal storage to allow the full 16G to take apps.
JediNite posted root instructions here http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2018478. This thread is for the Aldi Onix, which appears to be identical.
I picked up my 2 this morning from the PO as StarTrak (apparently) turned up while we were out. Both are black, and are currently on charge. Boxes weren't sealed but both still have the clingwrap attached.
For those who are having problems and have decided to have a play with it, here is the firmware:

    (d) What should I do if I have changed my mind and want to return a product?

Please choose carefully as Dick Smith does not normally accept return of products where you have simply changed your mind.

    http://stores.ebay.com.au/Dick-Smith-Online/Dick-Smith-Retur…

    Hmmm

  • WOW!! I got double pumped. Pink and will not progress past the DGTEC logo on startup. Have tried a few recovery options, but they did not work. I guess I will have to follow through with the return / refund process unless anyone has a recovery firmware / ROM image for this model. The Onix image mentioned earlier is not valid during install. I would say this is a DGTEC specific install.

Is there any way for someone to create and export a recovery ROM image from their tablet and distribute it to others on oz-bargain?

    • I'm in the same boat as you mate, except I got 2 x white. One works, one doesn't. Factory reset no good, and ONIX firmware fails verification / signature. My skills aren't good enough to extract the image from the working tablet and flash it to the non-working.

Only other thing I could see was that the DGTEC firmware is 20140114 on the working tablet, whereas the ONIX firmware is 20121015.

    • I'm in same boat one of my devices comes up with the dead android screen and nothing from the recovery screen works, a recovery image would be great going to contact dgtec (won't hold my breath) and see if I can get one.

  • Have one of these spare, if anyone in Brisbane is interested. White, tested to be working OK but otherwise unused, can be picked up in CBD or Carindale, at price I paid $35. PM me.

  • OK I got 3 (2 white, 1 black) and all of them don't work…

One is stuck on the dgtech boot screen.
Another the WiFi keeps dropping out every 20 seconds.
And last one it won't install any apps from play store, it just hangs on installing forever.

Is PayPal the best way to proceed?

    • I tried submitting on their website and after entering all the required details it says "unable to submit, please try again later".

If I wasn't pissed off before, I am now.

      • I just got an email reply from DSE, they've asked me to present the invoice & tablet to my local store for follow-up…maybe just do an end-run around the whole contact process & go straight there with the same story! ;)

        • Thanks Stu. I will try that tomorrow.

        • +1

@stumo: Hmmm, maybe better to put a pin in that for now!

I sent the wife to do this today & the reported response was pretty much word for word with what the store told ccarwyn below…maybe best to just hit up Paypal straight off the bat, save yourself some hassle.

I've just lodged my PP dispute, CBF dicking around with them any longer…

    • Yup, PayPal is the best way.

I logged a dispute Friday (item not as described, pink instead of Black, Android 4.0 instead of 4.1), and received a refund this morning.

I'm not sure if they want it back or anything, as they didn't send any other correspondence.

I didn't expect much for the price, but the fact it crashes, locks up, has 512MB of storage, with the 16GB seemingly an internal MicroSD card is a bit of a disappointment. I expected it to at least work…

  • +2

Took it to a store yesterday. They said this model tabet is not listed on their store stock, so must be an online only item and they could not help me. I then submitted a Paypal dispute stating that if I got a refund the dispute can be closed without further action. Today I got notification that I have been refunded and the dispute closed. Nil other contact from DSE to return it. My tablet arrived pink and stuck at DGTEC logo. Now will play around more to try and fix it.

  • +1

I still can't get this to work ;/

  • finally received mine and holy smokes is it slow. lots of freezes and crashes. god damn.

  • +2

Just got mine… and it's also pink… not impressed.

To make matters worse, not only was the box not sealed, but the power cord looked to be used and not twist tied properly like the USB cable.

Called Customer Service, they have to arrange a courier to pick it up, then they'll ship a black one (hopefully new one) to me… Still waiting for a call back about that.

    • Every time I call up I get a busy line (called this morning and afternoon) and when it wasn't busy I would be redirected and then hung up on.

What menus did you go through? I'm trying to get my pink one returned for a black one too.

      • +1

Pressed menu option 2, got someone virtually straight away, but it's been over an hour and they haven't called me back with any info as to if/when it will be picked up by a courier.

Yeah, it looks used. Why would there be fingerprints on the screen and the film not stuck on properly?

        Grrrr!

Time to call them back! (And yes, I was promised a black one would be shipped to me)… just tried to call, and got disconnected… nice!

    • Seems a few people are just raising Paypal disputes and getting refunds; is it confirmed they will ship a black one? It seems they were just getting rid of old stock, wouldn't be surprised if there were none left. Then again, people might be returning them; shocking battery life and the fact that out of "16GB" only around 500MB is available for apps might disappoint some people, not to mention the absence of Android 4.1.

      • +1

Yep, seems it has Android 4.0 not 4.1… and I keep getting hung up on!

        Dispute opened on PayPal.

  • OK so those who did the PayPal refund did you escalate to a claim, or just the first step of opening a dispute?

    • I don't know if others have received refunds or not, but i've just opened the dispute and requested a refund. I think I have to wait for PayPal to contact DSE and see if they agree to the refund or if DSE don't make any contact, I think PayPal makes a decision based on the information i've given them (wrong colour, wrong specs and appears to have been used).

I'll have to wait and see what happens!

      • Just be thankful yours actually works lol. I'm zero for three.

        • +1

I don't know if it actually works. I'm annoyed that it's pink. I'm annoyed that it looked used as soon as I opened the box (protective film not on right, fingerprints on screen, AC adapter unraveled). I'm annoyed that they promised to call me back to arrange a time to pick up the pink one and send out a black one… a call that i'm still waiting for. I'm annoyed that when I called back I kept getting disconnected.

I emailed them through the DSE contact form and on eBay, and so far all I received was a generic "we're out of the office" reply, so I opened the PayPal dispute.

It's the last time i'll be buying from DSE!

          (yes, i'm very annoyed LOL)

        • @Graffin:
Why are you contacting DSE? Just escalate the paypal dispute, simple.

        • @PainToad:

Thought i'd cover all my bases.

PayPal aren't going to do anything about it. I did escalate the claim and they're still waiting for contact from the seller (DSE).

Thought i'd also try the tablet out. It works… albeit slowly, but of the 16Gb internal storage, only 500Mb is available and no micro SD card seems to work… i've tried class 2, class 4 and class 10 cards with different capacities, so you can't use the camera, nor shift apps onto the "TF card".

Did a factory reset, and surprise surprise, it's not how I received it with other apps installed, and takes you step by step through the setup process… obviously it had been used previously.

After the factory reset, the internal storage now shows as having 13Gb available, and recognises a micro SD card, but there doesn't seem to be any way in which to get photos or apps to use the "TF card", even within other photo apps where you can change the location of where they're stored.

And, then the internal memory goes back to showing it only has 500Mb not 16Gb. And, the micro SD card does nothing.

If that wasn't bad enough, the tablet is slow as hell, even the Settings app crashes and closes.

          This thing is a POS.

I returned it to my local DSE for a refund. They seemed really apologetic and sympathetic about it. Telling me i'm not the only one and they've seen all the negative Facebook comments about their online sales and quite P'd off about it as it makes them look bad.

Kinda annoyed at PayPal for not doing anything. Their buyer protection is useless!

        • @Graffin:
I got a speedy PayPal refund without the issues with the tablet you have. All memory works fine. Outlined my successful dispute below.

Glad you finally got your money back.

  • Got a pink one too, was expecting black. My internal NAND doesn't work so some programs e.g. gallery errors on open "No external storage available" and then closes. I can't even use it as a picture frame!

    • I found the internal "tft" also did not work - when looking at storage, it would just blank.. solved that by formatting it. Seems to be okay now.

      • I tried that but it doesn't succeed in formatting. Waiting for a response to my paypal dispute now.

        • Same here. Can unmount/mount it. The tablet knows there's a card in there, but no app can use it.

Even after a factory reset, photos and apps are being stored on the internal memory. Even under application management, I was unable to move anything I'd downloaded from the play store from the internal memory to the TF card even though the button was available to me, it said it can't move it.

This device seriously isn't/wasn't worth the $29 of frustration it's caused me.

Dick can stick its pink tablet up their (insert orifice here) LOL

  • +1

Nothings happening on my PayPal dispute. Hmmmm.

  • +1

I lodged refund request with Paypal a few days ago due to not receiving what I ordered - a new, black, fully working tablet.

I've just received the refund from DS. They've sent an invoice with -1 against the product and shipping. They haven't requested that the product be returned to them either.

    • I get the feeling DS bought thousands of the few DGTEC tablets but haven't sold or been as good as they wanted and now just happy to get rid of them rather than deal with DOA tablets that are too cheap to bother fixing.
