Philips CitiScape Collection Uptown Headphones $43.94 Delivered @ DSE eBay

CDICKSMITH20

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/251506405517

Slightly cheaper than previous deal for this product (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/150413)

Pretty good value considering this is probably the version without the stupid volume controls that previous versions have suffered. (http://www.philips.co.uk/c-p/SHL5905FB_10/uptown-over-ear-bl…)

  • can anyone place these among the usuals like m50s and senn. hd202s?

trying to reccomend an entry level pair for a mate who enjoys bass and requires closed cans for work

    • +1

Don't know why these are priced so low, when they are actually a good pair of headphones. The build quality and styling is also very good, with very soft earpads. It's all metal construction, with only a bit of plastic.

However these are quite quiet, typically have to go quite close to full volume on a phone. If you mate enjoys bass, then he won't be too happy with these. It's still there but hardly there, especially if it's just running off a phone.

These are the newer ones though, so maybe there was a change but I doubt it. I bought the first gen ones for the mad deal at HN for $22 a while back. Still goin strong.

      • Wasn't the HN deal for Philips Downtown (which is also very highly regarded by many). I was so gutted that I missed on that one!

I suspect you saw this post : https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/115046?page=2#comment

But yeh, it was both. The Uptowns were the main attraction. But then they sold out, and the OP changed the title of the post to the Downtowns, as they were still available(You can view changes in the post revisions). I should know, as it was a right hassle to get them off HN :)

Btw, original title : "Philips CitiScape Collection UPTOWN Headband Headphones - Black Colour >> $22 @ Harvey Norman"

          Good deal :)

      • Diagree, I own these, lots of users had issues with the in-line volume controller.

After a re-cable, they're quite good (albeit not overly detailed and a little bloated in the bass)

        • Yep my only other gripe is that useless slider. Worst thing ever.

But the headphones themselves have awesome build quality. Much better than many of the plastic constructed ones you see around.

        • any tutorials for a noob on how to recable?

How much bass? The M50's would beat these by a tad in bass, but I think these are better for closed cans for work, especially if he wants to use them for a while. The earcups on these actually go over your ears, unlike the M50's that just sit flat against your ears. M50's are juist slightly better sound wise, but these have quite good sound too.

I just got these from DS on Friday, and the lack of that stupid slider control is bliss!

      • Have you tried the version with the slider control? I have a suspicion that they might have different internals completely. I found this on head-fi just today (after my purchase) http://nsa34.casimages.com/img/2013/10/03/13100311470332428.… One on the right is the old version and it has different specs…

        • +1

Nope I haven't, sorry mate! The differences don't look too dramatically different, all I can see that might affect sound is the change in diaphragm and the lower power required for these new ones, but obviously I have no idea, just observation!

  • So these are the new ones without the slider? thats great! the slider caused issues with balance and cutting out for some.

The old ones were a little bloaty in the bass, but very comfy, could be a winner…

  • Which 1 is better? All from dse

    • would like to know which one to get too… anyone?

  • I got this on the last dicksmith deal with similar price, can confirm the black/black DOESN'T have volume slider. So perfectly balance.

Everything else pretty much the same as older model (built/flat wire/soft pad), but in my opinion the older model look sexier with two tones.

As far for sound, without amp, it sounds fun and quite bassy (loose and boomy, not beats/vmoda overbearing bass, but definitely not neutral), with amp, is probably the best sounding headphone under $100, it becomes more neutral and sounded very tight and good extension. Very much recommended at this price. Enjoy!!

    • What amp are you using for these?

      • Schiit Magni, but Fiio should suffice :)

They don't really need amp for loudness, but once powered with proper amp, the sound quality do improve. Just don't expect beat $200-300 headphones :) for under $100 not sure what's better (closed over ear headphone) category

  • Had these a while.

    • supremely comfortable but can get a bit warm. Like large Audio Technica headphones.
    • You can do without an amp, just have to have volume higher than you would with other headphones
    • great build quality, cable is not as flimsy as it looks
    • well worth it..
  • it's coming up as $54.93 for me?

did i miss out on the $43.94 price?

    • did you apply the coupon?
