  • good deal

  • Sorry, was searching for the ready to go at 1st. then found the barebone actually is 139 and some issue on my side preventing me from clicking +ve

  • +1

Maybe the SE rep can help with fleshing out this deal post with links etc :) I'm sure they was all set to go and post it before easternculture beat them to it ;)

    • +1

sorry, if the SE rep can pm me with the links coded, ill post them up

      • details PMed to you mate - thanks for the post!

    • LOL - kearnsy is totally right!

      I guess i'm getting slow :P

whats the best method of getting lots of additional storage for these.

Are these a worthy replacement for the trusty N40L? (I want something quieter)

Are they smooth at 1080p running windows/xbmc/sickbeard/sabnzbd?

    • Nuc's not exactly the best for storage, with what you are coming from.

In the taller NUC (I3/I5) you can fit up to a 1TB MSATA as well as a 2TB Seagate Slim ripped from its enclosure and put into the 2.5" bay.

Any more storage and you will need to go external. If you don't want additional power packs, you will need to get a external usb portable hard disk (for example a 2nd 2TB Seagate slim).

There are a number of USB ports on these and this will be your limiting factor with direct connected storage.

The I3 and I5 very fast compared to the HP you currently have.

How is the N40L noisy? Mine has been running for a good 18 months and is pretty darn quiet. Hide it behind a cabinet door with a bit of airflow and you can hardly hear it or look at other fan options. Having both the N40L and the NUC 2820, the NUC (windows 8.1) makes a great front end to the n40L being the backend (running OMV). The advantage is I can just mount NUC to the back of the LCD and have the N40L in a different room streaming.

    • I found the N40L to be too noisy to sit in my lounge room, although if you live near a busy road you may never notice it. I replaced it with a NUC and have never looked back, N40L is now my SAN box in the study (which I'm in the process of replacing with a Raspberry Pi).

I run Media Portal on Windows 8.1 with a BOXDN2820FYKH0 and have no playback issues at all.

The NUC varies it's fan speed according to the heat it senses, out of the box it is set (BIOS setting) to a minimum fan speed of 40%. Changing this minimum to 0% but leaving the maximum at 100% means your NUC will be silent most of the time and only run the fan when it actually needs it.

I bought both the N40L and the NUC from ShoppingExpress and have had no issues.

      • I replaced both fans on my N40L which makes it whisper quiet.
I remember I replaced the fan for the HDD's with a Scythe Silent Fan and the PSU fan with a Sunon Maglev Silent Fan.

The NUC isn't any more quiet, it is about the same noise level once you put heavy load on it.\

I'm currently using my N40L as a NAS and HTPC setup, works extremely well and QUIET."

Fan Replacements I used for my N40L:
Scythe Slip Stream 120mm PWM Adjustable Fan SY1225SL12HPVC
        Sunon KDE1204PKV3 4020 40mm x20mm Fan

The PSU one is quite important, as the stock one makes quite alot of noise.

Also with the NUC, don't do what 'OZB Al' said about changing the Fan to 0% minimum. That will damage your board, there has been many reports on the web, the lowest you should go is 15%, however 20-25% is best.

The percentage variates the voltage put to the fan, if you set it too low it doesn't have enough "voltage" to initially push the fan, therefore you will be wasting power and the fan won't even be moving at all.

When fan's get older this voltage required to start the fan goes up, which is why you shouldn't set it too low as you may get into trouble later on with a fan which isn't moving.

Obviously it will kick on eventually even though you set it at 0% however….. by then it is too late and would have done some damage (even if not immediately visible).

Is that NUC using the newer N2830 CPU?

    • Yes

      • +2

        your website says N2820?

        • +4

Sorry - I might have confused myself with the processor.

Version on box - H22962-101. It should be the old model 2820. Assembled ones have the latest bios installed which resolved previous issues.

          SE

      • Ready to pull the trigger but I'd also like to know this..?

        • +1

At that price, I highly doubt it is the newer version (2830).

        • @CYMA:

I can confirm they are the newer model, the stock SE has is 04/14 build and onwards and the one I got last week was the new model

        • +1

          @Copie:
          I hope so
but REP has confirmed the version on the box is H22962-101

whats the version of your one?

        • @bostos:
          H22962-103

        • +3

          @Copie:

I got one last week from SE (not from their previous sale) and mine is the same build date but I have the N2820 CPU.

Edit: My box 'Version #' is H22962-101.

      • +2

        @REP

Are you certain the CPU is the N28 30 , not the N2820?
Needs to be version H22962-103 or later to have the N2830 processor.

    • I think someone mentioned on another SE deal that the N2820 they got from SE was a 2830.

I believe Intel are still marketing the Celeron NUC as N2820 even though they are N2830 inside. This makes it extremely difficult for both customers and retailers such as SE who sell them.

I would trust if SE are now saying they are N2830 in the comments, then that's what they are…disregard the website, even though its right (its wrong).

      • Our technician is not around to help check it physically, so base on the version on the box, i'll treat it as 2820. Unless more previous customer can assist on this one.

        • Ok don't trust the all singing SE rep, he obviously can't spot a N2830 NUC if his life depended on it ;p

        • +1

          @kearnsy:

          LOL :P

  • +2

Just want to mention that the Assembled Intel NUCs are tested and updated to latest bios with our "special care". So once you got it, they are hassle free & good to go.

    Cheers

Are the AA and SA on the $139 NUCs H22962-103 & H24582-203?

  • Must I use the low voltage ram for the NUC? Can I use some of my old laptop ram for it?

  • +1

I see on their promo page that a power cord is listed as an option extra. Does that mean that NUCs don't come with a power cord by default?

    • The intel Celeron model comes with the power cord, the i3 & i5 DONT. For assembled system, all of them comes with the Power cord.

  • Has anyone got a videocardbenchmark score for the N2820?

The cpu passmark score seems abnormally low at 1020…

The only information on the GPU I can find is at:

    http://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/26578

  • Is N2820 powerful enough for playing 3D movies on xbmc?

    • to add-onto seungigi's questions

      • in 1080P, with .mkv (10-40GB rips) that carries DTS?
      • Yes to both.

    • Take a look at the end of this thread which had a detailed review and some questions answered on this.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/153244

  • Do these have AC wifi or N? All the specs say N

    • Only assembled ones and Celeron have built in WiFi.

      WiFi card installed on assembled

      • Ah right. On your website, under 'Networking' in the specification tab, you have it listed as N :)

        • Good to point out. Celeron model uses 7260HMW BN which is wireless N 300.

The i3 and i5 assembled will be Wireless AC.

          Regards
          SE

  • Are these machinese capable of running games on steam when I stream it from my main desktop?

    • +1

I've tested it and it works remarkably well. 1080p, but it was over Ethernet not wifi.

      • Thanks for the reply, I have Ethernet so might get one to game with in the bedroom

  • Wanted the I5 one but with 8GB of RAM, and I didn't need a 120GB SSD(Only needed 60 for the OS). Ended up going from Amazon which was still cheaper, but this is still a good price for those who want to buy locally. :)

  • Rep please post back here when you know the answer for sure regarding the N2830 issue.
I would guess it willl make a big difference to sales.
NOTE the N2830 insanely still says 2820 on the box so you need to check the version number as posted above.

  • -3

Rep, which version is the Win8.1 supplied with the bundle?
    Thanks.

  • Guys SE's stock is definitely the updated model, the one I recieved from them last week confirms this

    • can you check the version of your one?

      • Yep 103, build date 04/14 and the bios confirms this as it's showing as a 2830

  • Regarding the listed Intel AC wireless module:
Can anyone comment if this is the most recommended one for NUCs? I know there are a variety of types available.

    • All much of a muchness really, you can change out the wifi/BT card in the celeron model as well, its a mini pcie like the i3/i5.

  • Can anyone link a cheap 1 or 2 TB HDD for the nuc. Can you fit an MSATA ssd and HDD at the same time?

    • why not buy this:
      WD Blue 1TB 2.5" WD10JPVX - $85

gives you a $10 off your order when you buy with the NUC.

mSATA & HDD can be fit at same time.

    • Can you fit an MSATA ssd and HDD at the same time?

The i5 BOXD54250WYKH can take both a msata and a 2.5" drive internally.

  • I am all ready to pull the trigger, just a few questions:

    1. How can you tell which ones come with free postage?

    2. I want the celeron, a 60gb ssd and 4gb of ram, will this come installed or do I get all the boxes and do it myself? If so, can you offer a package with the 60gb HDD?

    3. The op mentioned the assembled comes with updated firmware, does this mean the others you need to stuff around with updating it?

    Thanks

    • Hi darpy01,

      Apologize for the confusion.

      1. SSDs comes with Free Shipping, the rest shipping applies.
      2. Assembled NUCs are pre-built and ready for dispatch anytime, so the specs cannot be changed. You will have to consider the package 1 for the cheapest option.
      3. Any NUCs not assembled means you need do assembling and installation by yourself. If you do not wish to go through any hassle AT ALL, choose Package 2, which comes with Windows 8.1 and once powered on - it works without the need to do any updates.

      Cheers
      SE

      • The Kingston SSD doesn't seem to include free shipping :(. I would assume it only applies to the Samsung SSDs, correct?

        • yup only the SSD's free shipping.

        • @ShoppingExpress:

Well the Kingston SSD isn't giving any free shipping discounts. Can you guys fix that please?

        • +1

          @noonoo12:

          Fixed
          cheers
          SE

      • You might consider Windows 7

Windows 8.1 doesn't come with media center out of the box (needs Pro, and even then, have to pay extra), and I hear do not work on 720p TVs

  • Here's a good video(Youtube ~13 mins) on how to install the parts. Pretty simple stuff compared to a normal PC build.

  • ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh yes :D

  • anyone know a decent usb Turner, that work on these, os would be Windows 7?

  • I'm interested in an i3 or i5 setup for a replacement htpc duties. Can they suitably handle 1080p H265? My existing setup just can't handle the extra processing needed to decode them.

  • I still don't get the purpose of these machines. Aren't these just laptops without a screen and battery? Wouldn't laptops be cheaper considering they ship with an OS already?

    • They are treated as cheap HTPC and much more power efficiency than laptops…Builtin connectivity with lots of Hifi home entertainment etc

  • The recent ready mode bios update has my jaw dropping at how quick it resumes. Don't forget to enable it in bios and update drivers from intel…

  • @Shopping Express

Left you a PM regarding the model number.
Waiting to buy if it is the N2830 model.

    • Sorry bro, our technician's on holiday atm till next week - therefore i cannot confirm the processor right now.

      Cheers
      SE

      • Is there any one who could just have a look at the bottom of one and check if its version H22962-103? I would really like to buy one if it is the 2830.
You will sell heaps on Ozb if it is possible to confirm.
I bet a lot of guys, like myself, are holding back due to confusion.

        • It's random I assume. I bought a NUC last week from SE (after their previous sale) and I have the H22962-101 version.
Also SE mentioned their box versions is the same as mine somewhere in the comments yesterday.

        • I have checked the stock yesterday & its - H22962-101. As not all stock at this warehouse (and i didn't go through all boxes), therefore i cannot confirm with you.

          Cheers
          SE

        • @ShoppingExpress:
Ok well next sale then I guess.
Really would like to buy one. Copie above https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/155810#comment-2161534 seems completely sure he received N2830 from you so it's weird!

  • It seems a guessing game as to what you will actually get with the 2820 - so i'll pass this time.

  • How often do these go on sale? I got called away and missed my chance to buy.

  • Seriously Intel? A miniHDMI connector? To save 2mm or so on the connector, now I've got to buy a miniHDMI to HDMI connector/cable from somewhere.

And I'd like to punch whoever put those plastic connectors on the wireless aerial leads and then wrapped them in tape.

  • +1

    I have received mine
    it is H22962-101 unfortunately

  • Ugh why did you post the " power cable for nuc "

The celeron one I bought needs a 12v plug type not the 3pin laptop style one you advertised.

My fault for not looking close enough but still :(

    • Saying that where would I find a power supply for the NUC. There are none on ebay

    • Hi Whomastadon,

The Celeron model we sell already includes the cable. Only i3 and i5 need to buy seperately.
Are you referring to power adapter by any chance?

      Cheers
      SE

      • Does the cable come in the box with the NUC? I havent had a chance to open and check.

        • With the i3/i5 comes with the brick itself you just need to purchase the 240v to C5 power cable. The celeron comes with a complete wall wart, no extra cable needed.

Also to note the i3/i5 has mini HDMI, where the celeron has a regular HDMI connection

        • @Copie:

FYI: And MSY sell miniHDMI -> HDMI 1m cables for $6. They also have 2 & 3 meter versions for not much more. Cheaper than buying a miniHDMI to HDMI adaptor.
