My local Masters say they can Click & Collect.

  • This looks like a good buy if you can find one

    • Will it work with this PVR? or do you need to upgrade?

      • +6

When this PVR gives you grief with remote input lag, channel changing lag and multiple error messages you will probably need the sand pit so you can bury it.

        • +1

sounds like one of kogans better products then!

Possibly $55 + postage if you have already done this…

Just some tips to save extra dollars. You can still take advantage of the 5% cashback on your tap-and-go ING Direct or ME bank cards. I bought three of these and asked to scan them separately.

I don't recommend buying this Kogan PVR without trying one out. I'm about to return the ones I bought last week. They're the older Kogan KAPVR50XXXA model. Kogan's new model is KAPVR50XXXB.

    • I did this at aldi and got a call from the head office saying if i do this dodgeycway again they will cancel my card
      LOL!

      • and i still havnt got my $75 from the promotion!
  • +8

Fudge! I now recommend staying away from these!

My KAPVR50XXXA just fried itself as I was typing up the previous message. Smoke was literally coming out the right hand side rear of the box (near the yellow A/V cable) and I had to pull the plug out of the wall. I bought my PVR on Thursday, used it for 10-20 hours with most of the plugs used up: HDMI + digital coax audio + A/V (Yellow) + Left audio (White) + Right audio (Red).

Was viewing ABC24 (HD) for an hour then changed to 7Mate (HD) and the box went blank, reset itself three times and then fizzled with a puff of smoke.

    Batch information for mine is:
    - Model = KAPVR50XXXA
    - Serial number = KAPVR50XXXAB0159 (its printed on the side of the cardboard box)

    • HW_Module: M3606
    • HW_Version: MC6313-VER1.0
    • SW_Module: KAPVR50XXXA
    • SW_Version: DVB-T V1.0.5
    • Date: Jun 15 2012

Good luck to anyone thinking to buy one of these. I'm returning this as DOA and going to get a refund on the other two. There's no way I'm leaving my parents to deal with Kogan's tech support for this model.

My experience with Kogan Technical Support has been bad for this Masters bought product. I raised a support ticket on Friday to request the latest firmware. Got an email reply within 15 minutes saying Kogan couldn't find any record of my email address, kogan account or the transaction details. They asked for the serial number.

I replied to the email 30 minutes later (still on Friday). Gave them the model number and specifically asked if Kogan provides support for Kogan products sold at Masters. Since telling them I bought it at Masters they haven't responded.

My wish to own a PVR is now vanished like a puff of smoke.
(don't watch enough TV to justify myself to get one, but this is good price!!!)

Better than wake up in smoke.

    • Geezuz! That's a safety/fire hazard.

      • +2

Probably not - just a component or 2 frying in the power supply. Never seen a fire in a low wattage consumer appliance over years of repairs even after lightning strike, but have seen quite a few put out smoke as they fail. There's not much that is flammable inside, but if something fell through the ventilation vents… Still it's a worry. Wouldn't buy.

        • +1

Gotcha, should have put a question mark in that last phrase but that's good to know, thanks.

        • @samlor:
No worries. That was no criticism of you ;-) If it was my new PVR, I'd be the one giving off fumes.

    • You must have recorded a mission clip from Jim.

    • Why haven't you taken this up with the retailer (Masters)?
      https://www.masters.com.au/DIYProjectsIdeas/SupportHelp/Retu…

      • My previous comment was getting huge and I should have communicated a bit better. While the PVR was working, I discovered a dozen bugs. I raised a support ticket on the Kogan website and described my 4 worst bugs and asked if they had a later firmware than the version on my box or could fix the Kogan PVR's bugs.

My PVR fried itself a day after the tech support request. Kogan don't yet know its blown up.

As the PVR only died last night I haven't had a chance to return it to Masters. I only had time to warn OzBargainers so they could avoid the hassles and be informed that Kogan's Technical Support might not want to help Masters customers.

  • Ok, I've had a fair bit to drink, way too much coffee & can't sleep…but for the life of me I can't fathom why Masters is selling Kogan products???

    • +1

That baffled me too, but I guess they have a department for home entertainment (like shelves for TVs and such), so may as well try and sell these? That's the only reason I can think of.

  • Last deal had discount code OR14 - anyone try it? (Masters site isn't letting me register on the phone. Won't recognise any postcode for delivery.)

      • Thanks TB, worth a try.

  • Who is TB? and how does he or she related to TA?

    • Only Alphabetically related.

  • Was about buy this but based on comments it seems like a fail. Anyone can recommend a decent budget on of these?

  • +1

Kogan take Planned Obsolescence to new heights, or lows depending on your point of view.

Devices ARE at least meant to survive 12 months use, Kogan.

  • Does anyone know if it has a 2.5" or 3.5" internal HDD?

    • 2.5" according to the specifications.

    • For warranty reasons its best not to buy it for the hard drive. Once you open the PVR you probably void Kogan warranty. Remember that you are buying this product from a Hardware store and not a computer store so they might not have handled with care.

      • +1

Often PVRs contain CE spec HDD. Consumer Electronics HDD do not contain the error checking used in PC HDD. There is no need for error checking (decreases speed) in large video files. But speed of processing/ storage is crucial.

    • I peaked through the grill on mine. Its a 3.5" SATA HDD.

Although every Kogan batch can source different parts. My specific PVR batch had a Hitachi HDS721050DLE630, manufactured May 2012, 6Gbps.

When the PVR was working I never felt much heat being produced from the air grills and the PVR case felt cool. So I guess the HDD doesn't run too hot.

  • I got one today and it works just fine. You need to remove the thin film of plastic over the top, front and sides of the unit. I am not going to biotch for 75 bills

Chullora NSW store was selling it for $45, I saw only 3 left on the clearance desk.

    • Photo possible dude?

      • +1

Something tells me a photo now would be of a blank space on the shelf! Still listed online at $75.
