It's not a bad price as such. The PS3 Slim and any price cut have still not officially been announced, though I grant you they're likely. The rumoured price cut is $100 USD (as you stated) and not AUD. There's also no guarantee that if there is a price cut in USD that any saving will be passed on to Australian consumers.
Yeah, a $US100 price cut is probably about $1.50 cut for us..
wheras a $US100 price rise is probably about a $300 rise for us, it all makes sense if you don't think about it..
Having said that, I'd be waiting for the Slim to arrive before slapping down hard earned for a PS3. But if you NEED one now, this is a very good price.
Or they might do it Apple style where a significant price drop in USD equals a significant increase in AUD. :D
Just because there is a newer model coming doesn't mean this isn't a bargain, its certainly not worth a -ve vote… This a very decent price for a new console, ebgames wants $529 for a preowned one.
That 1-day site was selling $399 80GB PS3s for one day. Surely a Sony centre could do better.

It was probably a 'loss leader' also didnt include a HDMI cable. You are also compairing an online 'one day sale' to a normal retaier. Chalk and cheese

Big W had them for $413 same model a few months back managed to pick up 3. If you offered at this price I would consider a bargin but not at $499 when the slim is just a few months away. HDMI cable $6 dollar at wireless 1.

these 40gb ps3 models have appeared on ozbargain for $399 a few times so i'm gonna vote neg in comparison to them
You guys are being obtuse. The point is, could you go out today and buy a brand new PS3 40gb for less than $500 with the HDMI cable? If no, then it is a bargain. Deals in the past or in the future are irrelevant if you need to buy one today.

agree - unless someone can show one of these cheaper that I can also buy today, I think the $499 is the trick - if free postage was offered, I'd have a hard time not buying one….
Its pretty cheap to send via courier. Unfortunatly as the PS3 is quite cheap so I cant offer free postage :(

in general the PS3 is a bad investment
you loose a few hundred bucks (in this case $500) plus all the games you will purchased (around $50-$80) per game.
at least with the Wii, you get some physical exercises….
That's a ridiculous comment! How on earth can you say that it's a bad investment? I'm pretty sure that most people who spend $500 on a console and $50 - $80 a game are doing so because they consider it a wise purchase, and do so knowing that they will get a great deal of joy out of it. Unless you're buying it with the view of selling it on to the Amish, I would have to say it was a pretty good investment.

This is BS? stopped by today at the Sony Centre in Southport to pick up one. But they would not sell me one for $499. The insisted that the console will only be sold for $499 if the 2 year extended warranty was also purchased bringing the total price to $599. Don't waste your time with this.

So the new ps3 has been announced - out early sept - 120gb for $499 - does that make the 40gb even cheaper now :P
damn! lucky i couldn't buy one. No one is going to buy the 40gb unless the price is reduced by a lot..
It's not a bargain considering it's 40gb and they'll be clearing out PS3's soon to make way for the PS3 slim, which is gonna be $100 USD cheaper. You're buying an old 40gb PS3 for almost the same price as new, higher capacity PS3 slim when it comes out.
