fares must be purchased online using a MasterCard debit card issued by an Australian financial institution.

    • Payment by Visa or MasterCard credit cards or international debit cards is permissable subject to payment of this fee ($8.50).

      • The OP hasn't mentioned either

      • What jv means is that the fares are only $24 if you pay by Mastercard debit. I have upvoted you so you're back to neutral.

      • +2

I've paid with 28 Degrees card without a fee. I think airlines have no way of distinguishing between credit/debut cards - they'll only know that it's a MasterCard from the number.

    • +5

Use your qantas cash (their frequent flyer card)card - it doubles as a debit mastercard and is fee free - no booking fees thanks to Qantas

      • Can this be confirmed please?

        • Qantas site says the card can be used as MasterCard Debit. If you have a Qantas FF Card, just activate the Cash Card feature online. Main problem is it takes 1-3 days to load money onto it online.

I don't recommend getting a seperate Tiger flight that will connect with an international flight. Tiger has been known to delay/cancel their flights without much notice. If you do, make sure you give yourself enough time to make alternative arrangements to get to your international connecting flight (drive, bus, hitchhike) as Tiger will not compensate you with accomodation/refunds.

I've read and heard of this happening before as well as a myriad of other things to do with Tiger.

    • +1

But why did you neg this deal? Just because it has poor connectivity to international flight?

      • +4

That was an accident which i've revoked but Tiger deserves negs all day long for the issues they've caused people previously. Tiger is the Dodo Internet of the airline industry.

People say you get what you pay for but does that necessarily mean that they deserve all the stuff that happens to them?

never had a problem with the 6 flights I've taken with them.

        • +5

same with me. Travelled MEL-SYD few times and never had a problem.

        • +5

          @cniminc:

same here, flown at least 10 times , one was delayed about half an hour but so what ?! you'd have to be stupid not to factor that in when booking connecting flights

        • +1

They're hit and miss. I've had a few bad experiences; however, I keep coming back cos it's cheap!

        • +2

I've flown easily 20+ times, worst delay so far is 10 minutes (but yes they have technical and weather issues like any other). They are my starting point for any flight (if they fly there). Jetstar is my last resort, Virgin is my favourite if they have a really good sale on.

I have had a flight cancelled with Tiger too (but many months out) and they booked my on Virgin as a replacement. I was surprised it wasn't just a refund.

I also would never travel without insurance ($200 for unlimited Australian travel) and trip by trip if I venture OS.

        • +1

Travel Insurance won't cover if an Airline cancels a flight for operational reason.

    • +1

That happened to us a few years ago.

Connecting flights from MEL-KUL but they changed the flight times so much, we weren't going to make the MEL-KUL flight on time, especially when you need to be at the airport for the international flight ~ 3 hours before departure.

No apology, no credit / refund. Just that it's changed… too bad. Even after calling them, they couldn't or wouldn't do anything.

      • To me sounds like service was not provided. I think you may contact your creidt card company for charge back.

        • Was years ago… but hmmm… I'll keep that in mind for next time! Thanks.

        • They were separate flights. Not sold as connecting flights. As such the service was provided but he wasn't on the plane. Attempting charge back could be fraud.

I got this close to Melbourne from Adelaide last week on a $10 Tiger flight until we got turned back due to fog in Melbourne :-(
Prepaid more for return skybus tickets to the city. All non-refundable. Much sadness.

      • Feel sorry for you.. That fog was shocking!! Any tiger compo? Maybe skybus would be generous and refund you or rebook…

        • They told us other flights were being cancelled/returned due to the fog so generally people were pretty understanding in the air. When I got back I checked the Melbourne airport's arrivals/departures info and it looked like only Tiger flights were cancelled - other flights were simply delayed. I've heard rumours that Tiger do not have the equipment/training to land without vision, unlike our other airlines - but can't confirm if this is true. So I'll propagate the rumours!
I gave my skybus tickets to a relative, so it's not all doom and gloom.
I applied for a refund through Tiger's website (I found an online form for refunds, can't remember where) - but I don't have the energy to chase it up on the phone with them. I'm calling it a lost cause and a lesson learnt.
Cheers for your concern though :-)
Here's a photo of the fog the next morning (not my photo) - they weren't BS-ing us!

        • @muncan:
That fog was shocking.. I was looking at a flight tracker and there were 4 planes from Melbourne doing circles near Mount Gambier. This was about 10AM, and a 6:30 from Melb was still there. Anyway

Adelaide gets some, but not Perth….

What's the deal with Tiger and Mastercard?

I just looked up the details of my last Tiger ticket and it was ordered on a Mastercard debit card which I no longer have, therefore no exemption from $8.50 fee, therefore no more Tiger tickets- I could not in all good conscience pay $8.50 just for paying by card- I'd wake up in the middle of the night swearing.

I seriously am not able to find any 24 dollar flights

Any cheap flights from Shanghai to Gold Coast?

    • +14

FYI, the OZBargainer living in Burger King in Shanghai airport is already home. Just thought I should mention it if you were asking for him :P

  • Tiger is losing ~$2 million a week.
May not want to book too far in advance.

    • Source?

      • They're owned by Virgin, they're fine!

    • i was to create and index of the airline industry and see their profitability, you'd never book a airfare in advance.

As branson said, easiest way to be a millionaire is to start as a billionaire and buy an airline.

Plus the annoying delays/cancellations that my friends have experienced, tigerair topped my list my no-go list in Aus

Allocate an extra day off for transportation if you really that eager to stay with tigerair

    • Can't really blame Tiger on its own. All airlines oversell seats; just like how hotels oversell their rooms. It's because they take account for no-shows and by doing it this way, it will make sure that they make the most money, even if leave passengers stranded. Yes, they shouldn't be doing this but it happens. Gotta blame all airlines, not just only Tiger.

If you don't want to be one who is stranded, make sure you check-in earlier online to guarantee you a seat - even if you have to drop off baggage.

Don't forget to Price Beat with Jetstar to pay $21.60 instead.

    • +1

Never flown with Tiger, but have always price beat with Jetstar. No card fees when price beating either. The only down side is having to wait on hold and spend time with a person entering details. Online chat can be better than phoning if you get someone who struggles with our accents.

      • +1

I've never had a problem price beating over the phone. I just leave the phone on loudspeaker and watch a movie while waiting.

Grrat idea! Booked SYD-BRI , 2 people for 131AUD or so
      (Return)
No booking fee x4 saved 8.5$x4

AND used Qantas ANZ to get double FF points and working towards that 50,000 points bonus

      Winning!! What a Ozbargain combo!!
      Thanks guys!

  • shit… i just paid $35 a week ago :(

  • +2

Managed to pricebeat with Jetstar in under 20 minutes saving me $87.20 for 4 people ($68 + 10% price beat). Did it over webchat. The return flight was outside their within one hour T&C (was 70 mins) but they didn't question that. Now, time to apply for some leave……

Tiger airways canceled my flight last year to Melbourne. I won't trust them… I ended up going home and rebooked with Jetstar.

  • Just booked 2 flights to Sydney using my voucher :)

  • If Tiger reschedule a flight by four hours or more, then you MAY be entitled to a refund/credit. The MAY coming from the airline itself. Many years ago they rescheduled a flight on me Saigon to KL only gave me 2 days notice and that was by email. They pushed the time back by three hours and fifty minutes. I had to rebook with airasia to meet my connection. No credit or refund accepted. No phone number no email address only a fax no. I treat tiger very warily.

  • Tiger's website is making very little sense to me flight time wise. Isn't it like 2 hours 15 minutes + for Melbourne > Gold Coast

Tiger's website is telling me they can do it in 1 hour but from my experience that isn't possible? 1 hour Mel > Gold Coast but 3 hours 20 minutes for Gold Coast > Melbourne

Do they have to fly uphill when going south? How does this work? Also can't find any flights for $25 :( What am I doing wrong OzBargain?

    Best I could find:

      Day light saving time?

      • Now I feel like an idiot :( that does make sense. Interesting that you save 20 minutes one way though. It'd be nice if they put like flight duration there or something.

Seems there's no $24 tickets for that route or I was too late, knowing OzBargain I was probably too late :(

    • Still no daylight savings in Qld.
