  • Good price, but still not sure about that box.

I've got the older HDR-7500T from Humax… and love it.

Not a big name brand you'd recognise in a shop, but I've been very happy with it over the last 12 months.
It's only a twin tuner setup, but it's still got 1Tb storage (which is plenty for adhoc series recording at HD).

Plus it allows you to transfer recordings over to pc and isnt freeware crippled.

What I'm saying is, Humax have a good rep for fixing any firmware issues in their devices pretty quick… so dont be swayed if there are any early teething issues. The HMS1000T is looking to be their flagship device, so if you can get it cheap DO IT! :)

IceTV have also just released their 'rewording' of their terms and conditions btw.
"Lifetime" subscription is now most definitely 5 years or whenever your device dies, whichever the earlier.
There has been recent debate as to what their lifetime subscription entailed, but now its been made perfectly clear in their new terms and conditions sent to all existing customers.

Dodgy as, because when I bought my subscription there was no such limitation. Lifetime had no 'life limit'.

Anyway… Humax is awesome, and even better with IceTV. But get it at a good price and dont fall for "lifetime" spin.

    • The lifetime plan (5 years) is still good value :)

Edit: Ah they put the price up from $99 to $149 lol

Not a big name you'd recognise in a shop …

Maybe not here, maybe not quite yet.
Different story overseas, and certainly now a prominent brand in the U.K.

Humax are one of the originators of DTV tech.
I still own a working (connected to an old computer monitor) LG HD set-top box that may (after a less than great Thompson unit) have been the second-ever High Def device imported into Australia.
Made in its entirety for LG, by Humax.

Mine has a pretty faded front fluoro display but is otherwise in good nick. Without any equivocation, it also still has the single best quality infra-red remote control of any device that I've ever owned. Not one dodgy button to press, even now.

That said, no real idea of recent under-their-own-brand Humax imports, other than some pretty decent reviews I've read here and there.

I've had some gripes with Topfield firmware-issues in recent years. If it turns out that Humax are even a bit more on 'top' of things in relation to getting things properly sorted in that area, I wouldn't be at all surprised.

    • Unlike other Humax products, the HMS1000T doesn't support IceTV (at least not yet). But remote scheduling of recordings via smartphone is a built-in feature and the free-to-air EPG is much better than it used to be, so I don't think IceTV is necessary. I've got a HDR-7500T too and haven't found a need for IceTV (the so-called lifetime subscription is one of the reasons I have never bothered to try it), so I can't see why IceTV would be needed on the HMS1000T, even if it was available.

      • Can you record in series (called series link?) without ice tv?

        • Yes, series recording is possible without IceTV even on older model Humax machines. It can be a bit temperamental and repeats can sometimes be recorded as well, but it works.
